Cough attacks in an elderly patient: case reportA 69-year-old woman with complex regional pain

syndrome started daily stellate ganglion block (SGB) for10 days [drugs not stated].Two hours after her the fourthblock, a 1-hour cough attack developed. The fifth and sixthscheduled blocks went ahead. An uninterrupted 10-minutecough attack occurred 10 minutes after her sixth block.SGB was reduced, and 0.25% bupivacaine 6mL wasadministered at the seventh block. Ten minutes later, thecough attack recurred, lasting for 50 minutes beforesubsiding. SGB was stopped, and she was treated withpregabalin.

Author comment: "[W]e think that cough attack is mostprobably due to recurrent laryngeal nerve anesthesia thatallows aspiration into the trachea and should be consideredas a complication of SGB."Atici S, et al.
