Reactions 1310 - 17 Jul 2010 Bupivacaine Cough attacks in an elderly patient: case report A 69-year-old woman with complex regional pain syndrome started daily stellate ganglion block (SGB) for 10 days [drugs not stated].Two hours after her the fourth block, a 1-hour cough attack developed. The fifth and sixth scheduled blocks went ahead. An uninterrupted 10-minute cough attack occurred 10 minutes after her sixth block. SGB was reduced, and 0.25% bupivacaine 6mL was administered at the seventh block. Ten minutes later, the cough attack recurred, lasting for 50 minutes before subsiding. SGB was stopped, and she was treated with pregabalin. Author comment: "[W]e think that cough attack is most probably due to recurrent laryngeal nerve anesthesia that allows aspiration into the trachea and should be considered as a complication of SGB."
