Back9~o"ndThe R&D efforts made during the last four decades have impactedhorticulture in the country in many ways. The importance ofhorticulture is being realized by one and all, be ita small farmer, thecorporate sector or policy makers. There is now a large R&Dnetwork in the country with establishment of several institutionsand launching of a number of developmental programmes.Horticulture in fact has come out of village confines to diverse agro-climatic areas. Horticulture crop production surpassed food cropproduction in India for the first time during 2013-14. The trendcontinued during 2017 -18 with 305.40 MT.

Despite significant increase in production of horticulturalcrops, low productivity and profitability in several crops is still ahurdle and is required to be attended in order to meet futurechallenges and avail global opportunities in the country. Therole of innovative horticulture technologies is thus required tobe continuously updated and given to all the stakeholdersleading to safe, remunerative and sustainable production.

6.a~lie~Con9~essesThe Horticultural Society of India has been organizing bienniallyIndian Horticulture Congresses in different states of the countryto review R&D initiatives taken to sensitize various stake-holdersof the latest technologies and opportunities for the future. Thesecongresses have been very well attended and found useful by theparticipants. So far, seven congresses on different topical issueshave been successfully organized as below:

o First Congress on Improving Production,Productivity, Quality and Trade of HorticultureCrops held atNew Delhi in 2004.

o Second Congress on Opportunities and Linkages forHorticulture Research and Development (Focus:North Eastern Region) held at Barapani, Meghalaya in2007.

o Third Congress on New R&D Initiatives inHorticulture for Accelerated Growth andProsperity held at Bhubaneswar, Odisha in 2008.

o Fourth Congress sm Horticulture to Horti-Businessheld at New Delhi in 2010.

o Fifth Congress on Horticulture for Food &Environment Security held at Ludhiana, Punjab in 2012.

o Sixth Congress on Horticulture for Inclusive Growthheld at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in 2014.

o Seventh Congress on Horticulture for DoublingFarmers Income held at New Delhi in 2016.

It is now proposed to hold the 8th Indian HorticultureCongress-2018 at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalayaat Raipur, Chhattisgarh from October, 29th to November2nd, 2018 with following Objectives:

horticultural crops, e.g. Fruits, Vegetables & Tuber Crops,Floriculture, M&A Plants, Spices, Plantation Crops,Bamboo and Mushroom.

o To discuss potential of new generation tools andtechniques in crop improvement.

To share innovative technologies in alternative productionsystems of horticultural crops.

o To analyse future challenge and chalk out strategies tomitigate them to keep horticulture sector remunerative.

Customized Tools & Implements, Use of Non-Conventional Energy sources.

o Innovation in Social Sciences and Horti-business:New Start-Ups in Horticulture Sector, ExtensionInnovations, Capacity Building and Skill Development,Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Extension, use of ICT,Advisory Services, GAp, Certification, Farmer-ProducerOrganisations (FPOs), Policy Needs in Horticulture sector.

o Opportunities in Horticulture R&D in Chhattisgarh:Horticulture research and development in Chhattisgarh;Tribal area Horticulture-led Development Models,Developmental Schemes and their Impact, Crop Insuranceand Marketing Innovations, Promotion of Ethnic Crops andITKs in Horticulture, Successful Entrepreneurs and PPPModels, Marketing Models.

Pa~ticipantsThe congress is open to all those interested in Horticulture R&Dand related sectors, e.g. representatives from both public andprivate sectors, central and state government ministries anddeptt., scientists, development workers and students fromagricultural institutes and universities, state horticulture andother departments, representatives from international agencies,farmers' associations, agri-input agencies (like Seed, Fertilizers,Plant Protection Chemicals, etc.), NGOs etc. Thedeliberation of the Congress shall be in English.

P~esentationsThe Congress will cover Lead, Oral and Poster paperPresentations. •

Lead Papers: Lead papers on specific topics related to eachsession will be invited by the Programme Committee on thebasis of suggestions received. These will be allotted to eminentscientists. The extended abstracts (about 2 pages) of thesepapers are required to be submitted within three weeks ofrequest, while the full-length papers will be required to besubmitted latest by 31" August, 2018 for publication ofproceedings and its release during the Inaugural Session.

Oral Presentations: Both members and non-members ofHSI within India and' abroad shall be considered for OralPresentation subject to the relevance of the title and contents ofthe subject of presentations.

Poster Papers: The Researchers/Students are invited to submitAbstracts (max two as senior registered author) relating tobroad theme areas of the congress, which would be peer reviewedand presented as Poster papers in the event. Abstract(s) of onlyregistered delegates will be published.

The abstract(s) should be prepared in MS word not exceeding250 words. It must contain a clear title, name and affiliation ofthe author(s). The name of the presenting author should beunderlined and E-mail should be given at the end. There should

not be any sub-headings, figures, tables or references in theabstract. The abstract may be submitted through e-mail and/orby post along with a soft copy. The detailed guideline forpreparing the Poster paper (size 120 em x 90 ern), would bemailed to those authors whose abstract(s) are accepted forpresentation as per schedule during the Congress.

Raipur is an important location from archeological andhistorical point of view. The city of Raipur has been in existencesince 9th century AD. After independence it was included inCentral Provinces and Berar. When Chhattisgarh state cameinto existence, Raipur became its capital in the name of NayaRaipur, situated about 20 km from the old city.

The weather during October-November is very pleasant withminimum and maximum temperatures are expected to bebetween 17-18°C and 29-30°C with bright sunshine.Only light woollen clothing is recommended.

How to Reach: Raipur is well connected with Air, Train andRoad services from different parts of the country.

By Air: Raipur airport is 8 km from the city and 6 km from IGKWcampus (Congress venue).
