In the Melakartha system we divide the 12 keys of an octave (in the keyboard) into 7 swaras as follows:
1. Shadjama
S = Shadjama = First key of the octave
2. Rishaba
R1 = Shudhdha Rishabha = Second key of the octave
R2 = Chathushruthi Rishabha = Third key of the octave
R3 = Sathshruthi Rishabha = Fourth key of the octave
3. Gandhara
G1 = Shudhdha Gandhara = Third key of the octave
G2 = Sadharana Gandhara = Fourth key of the octave
G3 = Anthara Gandhara= Fifth key of the octave
4. Madhyama
M1 = Shudhdha Madhyama = Sixth key of the octave
M2 = Prathi Madhyama = Seventh key of the octave
5. Panchama
P = Panchama = Eigth key of the octave
6. Daivatha
D1 = Shudhdha Daivatha = Nineth key of the octave
D2 = Chathushruthi Daivatha = Tenth key of the octave
D3 = Sathshruthi Daivatha = Eleventh key of the octave
7. Nishadha
N1 = Shudhdha Nishadha = Tenth key of the octave
N2 = Kaishika Nishadha = Eleventh key of the octave
N3 = Kaakali Nishadha = Twelveth key of the octave
You can see above that R2=G1, R3=G2, D2=N1 and D3=N2. The reason for this lies in the Melakartha
algorithm.
Melartha Algorithm
The Melakartha algorithm is as follows:
A Melakartha Raga has all the 7 swaras in it.
A Melakartha Raga cannot have multiple entries for the same swara. For instance you cannot have both
N1 and N2 in the same raga as they both are Nishadas.
The same frequency cannot occupy more than one swara, for instance, if R2 is the Rishabha in a raga
then G1 cannot be used as Gandhara in that raga as G1=R2.
The swara order (increase in frequency called ArOhaNa) is Sa (Shadjama), Ri (Rishabha), Ga
(Gandhara), Ma (Madhyama), Pa (Panchama), Dha (Daivatha), Ni (Nishadfha).
Based on the above algorithm we can form the Melakartha ragas as follows.
Sa and Pa are the same in all ragas as they have only one entry.
Ma has two entries so we can form two ragas for every given combination of all other swaras i.e. if we are
given a sa,ri,ga,pa,da and ni combination we can form two melakartha ragas for that combination by
using M1 as ma in one raga as M2 as ma in another raga.
For instance, given S,R1,G2,P,D1,N1 we can form two Melakarthas as follows:
S,R1,G2,M1,P,D1,N1 and S,R1,G2,M2,P,D1,N1
R1 has 3 entries and Ga has 3 entries where two entries are common to both (i.e. R2=G1 and R3=G2).
Hence, considering the fact that frequency of Ga has to be always greater than Ri (i.e. the key for Ri
cannot come after the key for Ga) ,we can have totally 6 combinations for Ri,Ga as follows:
R1G1, R1G2, R1G3, R2G2, R2G3 and R3G3
Similarly we can have 6 entries for Dha,Ni combination as follows:
D1N1, D1N2, D1N3, D2N2, D2N3 and D3N3
Thus we have unique 2 entries for Ma, 6 entries for Ri,Ga and 6 entries for Ni,Dha. This makes a total of
2x6x6 = 72 unique combinations of all the 7 swaras defined based on 12 keys in an octave. .
Thus using the Melakartha algorithm we can create 72 Melakartha ragas. A mELakartha rAgA is also
called a Sampoorna raga as it has all the 7 swaras in it.
Is there a way to find the notes of a raga once we know the number? The Katapayadi system page on
wiki has an explanation. Here I have explained it in the way I use it and where we used it to make
something useful.
The pattern identification logic behind finding swaras of a Melakarta Raaga, given the melakarta number :
1. ma
o 1 to 36 : M1 (suddha madhyamam / small ma/ perfect 4th)
o 37 to 72 : M2 ( (prathimadhyamam/big ma/ sharp 4th)
o This means, the first half of the list has Suddha madhyamam (perfect 4th) and the second
half has Prathimadhyamam (sharp 4th, the note just after perfect 4th) in the raga.
2. ri
o R1 : 1 to 18, 37 to 54
o R2 : 19 to 36, 55 to 66
o R3 : 67 to 72
3. ga Divide the whole melakarta into groups each containing 6. From 1 to 36 we have 6 groups of 6 ragas each. Similarly 37 to 72 will have 6 groups of 6 ragas each. Nowo Groups 1,2,3,4,5,6 (1 to 36) will have G1 G2 G3 G2 G3 G3 respectively
o Groups 7,8,9,10,11,12 (37 to 72) will also have G1 G2 G3 G2 G3 G3 respectively
o e.g. raga number 63 : 63/6 = 10 remainder 3. falls in the group 11, hence has a G3
o e.g. raga number 29 : 29/6 = 4 remainder 5. belongs to the group 5 since it gives a
quotient of 4 and then some remainder. hence has G3
o e.g. raga number 7 : 7/6 = 1 remainder 1. belongs to the group 2 , hence has G2
4. dha
o D1 D1 D1 D2 D2 D3 – in each of the group that contains 6 ragas, (groups got by dividing
72 melakarta into 12 groups each having 6 ragas) the Dha swara will keep rolling in the above pattern.
5. ni
o N1 N2 N3 N2 N3 N3 – in each of the group that contains 6 ragas, (groups got by dividing
72 melakarta into 12 groups each having 6 ragas) the Ni swara will keep rolling in the above pattern.
Notice the pattern of dha and ni notes in the the image below:
Wikipedia Melakarta ragas
Dha and ni in the melakarta list
It is interesting to note how the 72 melakarta/mother ragas are formed in Karnatak music. Except Sa and Pa other 5 swaras have variants. Madhyama has 2 variants and other 4 swaras have 3 variants each. The following table shows how they are sung in ascending order (order of lowest note to highest). Notes with same position have the same tone e.g. Chathusruthi Rishaba and Shuddha Gandhara sound the same. So put together we have 12 notes.

*Source:WikipediaEach melakarta raga has the following qualities:
1.It has all 7 swaras2.The swaras have to follow the regular sequence – Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa and Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Ri Sa3.Within a group, the succeeding swara cannot have a smaller sound than its predecessor. E.g. N1 cannot follow D2 or D3. Likewise G2 cannot follow R3.
4.Each raga can have either M1 or M2
They are classified into 2 groups :
1.Groups with different combinations of Da and Ni
2.Groups with different combinations of Ri & Ga
Group I can possibly have 6 combinations:
(i)D1, N1(ii)D1,N2(iii)D1,N3(iv)D2,N2(v)D2,N3(vi)D3,N3Similarly, Ri & Ga will have 6 combinations.
Putting all these together,
1 (of Sa) x 1 (of Pa) x 6 (1 of the 6 combo of Ri & Ga) x 6 (1 of the 6 combo ofDha & Ni) x 2 (1of M1& M2) = 1x1x6x6x2=72 melakartha ragas
Let us take the Raga Divyamani (nice name!) with the Melakarta number = 48
What do we get when we divide the number by 6. 48/6 = 8, no reminders.
Now let us take Raga Dhavalambari (one who wears white?) with Melakarta number = 49
Dividing 49 by 6 : 49/6 = 8 with remainder 1
The Raga Divyamani finishes a 6 raga group. Raga Dhavalambari is the first raga in the next group of 6
Ragas.
Dividing by 6 and noting the reminder, is hence a good way to know where the particular raga lies
within a 6 raga group.
Once we know this, we can easily associate it with which Dha or Ni will be found in the Raga.
There, you have the complete method to know the swaras in a melakarta raga based on its position in the
list, which is found from the number of the raga.

See Katapayadi sankhya for more information on how to derive the various swaras of a raga from
its melakarta number. See swaras in Carnatic music for explanation of the notations like R1, G2, N2, etc.

References ----------
For ragas which have questionable arohanam/avarohanam patterns, I haveincluded a notation which indicates the source of that particularentry in the list.

Transliteration Scheme ----------------------
I have used the following transliteration scheme for the raga names:
Sanskrit / Dravidian Language Transliteration Alphabet------------------------------------------------------ a A i I u U Ru RU e E ai o O ow am :
k K g G n' ch Ch j J N' t T d D N th Th dh Dh n p ph b bh m y r l v sh Sh s H
ksh gny
L zh r' (additional Dravidian letters)
This is, for the most part, very similar to the standard scheme usedon various newsgroups. However, please note the significant deviationsfrom the norm in this table (th, Th, dh, Dh, H especially).
Thanks Due: -----------
This is the section in which I express my thanks to the manyindividuals who generously contributed their knowledge to this list.I have stopped listing names in this section because the number ofcontributors has grown comfortably large. Thanks to all who havehelped...I really appreciate it!

Table 2: The SIXTEEN note names in Karnatic music
Thus, we have Ri 2 = Ga 1; Ri 3 = Ga 2; Dha 2 = Ni 1; and Dha 3 = Ni 2.
There are sixteen names for the the twelve notes, for the following reasons:
In a raga, 1. When Ri 1 and Ri 2 occur consecutively, Ri 2 is sung as Ga 12. When Ga 2 and Ga 3 occur consecutively, Ga 2 is sung as Ri 33. When Dha 1 and Da 2 occur consecutively, Dha 2 is sung as Ni 14. When Ni 2 and Ni 3 occur consecutivesly, Ni 2 is sung as Da 3

The Chromatic Scale -- All 12 NotesWhat's the Chromatic Scale? Simply put, it's all of the possible notes in Western music -- a total of 12 notes -- strung together in order.
Why Is It Called the Chromatic Scale? I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason, but I have no clue. Nor does it matter. But here's what it looks like.
A A# B C C# DD#
E F F# G G# A (Sharps #)
OR
ABb
B C Db DEb
E FGb
G Ab A (Flats b)
The Intervals Between Notes Are the Same. Each note is a "half-step" higher in tone than the one before it, or put oppositely, is a half-step lower than the one after it. Makes sense, doesn't it. A half-step is a specific tonal "distance," so it is the same raising or lowering of pitch from one to the next note, regardless of the note's name. In other words, the distance between C and C# is the same as the distance between F# and G. Sorta like looking at a ruler, where the distance between 4 and 5 inches and 11 and 12 inches is 1 each either way.
Two Places in the Chromatic Scale Have No Sharps or Flats. Why? Doesn't matter, that's the way it is. The important fact is that the intervals are the same -- one half-step.
So where are these places? Look at the chart above, and you see it's between B and C and between E and F.
The Sharps and Flats Are the Same Notes. So A# and Bb are the same, and so on. These are called "enharmonic notes," although I only remember that occasionally, and it has no particular use in daily life. In the following table, showing all of the chromatic scales, we show only the sharps, but you can just as easily talk about the equivalent or "enharmonic" flats.
The Chromatic Scale Can Start On Any Note. To get it in your head, the above A to A sequence is probably easiest to use. That will be called the "A Chromatic Scale." However, you can start on some other note, like F#, in which case it's called the "F# Chromatic Scale." The Scale Name Is Always The First Note.
Making a new chromatic scale out of any note is really simple. As you can see below, every scale has the same notes in it. They are always in the same order. The only difference is which note starts and ends the particular scale.

Why Does This Help Me Play Guitar? Learn how this works. Though you'll rarely play the scale, knowing how it works will help you later, when it's time to learn how to make any major scale, which is the primary scale you'll have to learn. Besides, this is really easy.
