For my final thesis in Industrial Design, I worked from

the premise of contributing to improve my citys

public spaces, considered as primordial places for

the construction of collective identity.

After an extensive investigation I arrived to the

conclusion that the public space that was rapidly

losing importance as a place of gathering was

precisely the most usual: the sidewalks. With that in

mind I decided to use the practice of taking out chairs

to sit in the sidewalk as a reference.

The resulting product consists of a series of concrete

modules with different functions as explained in the

diagram. Their shape reminds of certain lines present

in the citys architecture and profuse vegetation.

The accumulation of these modules allows

interventions of different sizes, bearing in mind the

need to preserve a zone for circulation and providing

a place for exchange in a place of passage.

The project was presented to Montevideos

Municipality, to be included in the next elections

for the collective budget, where the citizens decide

which projects they consider more useful for their

city.

During the Master in Design, Art and Public Space

in Elisava I was presented with the opportunity to

develop a project for Barcelonas crowded Gothic

neighborhood, working with the citys Town Hall as

the client.

Considering that the neighbors main problem

was the threat that extensive tourism and hotel

development posed on their daily interactions, I

decided to develop a urban patio. The idea behind it

was to create an intimate space, different from other

large scale concrete squares, a space thought as an

extension of the house, following the Mediterranean

tradition of patios.

Located in an under used square, with a one storeyhigh building altering the four storey high proportion

kept by the others, the intervention focused on

the creation of a virtual volume to be covered by

vegetation through the years.

As the water used by the neighbors to grow the

orchard feeds the ivy covered structure,the buildings

translucent skin would reflect the care given by its

users by getting greener and greener.
