    At one time the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in Anthapiadas park. At that

    time, the Bhagavn was con templating and observ ing the sen tient beings of the fu ture.

    Out of pity for them, he spoke the teach ing of the Great Cund Dhra, the heart-mother

    of seven kos of perfectly en lightened buddhas. Thus he spoke the mantra:

    nama saptn samyak sabuddha kon tadyath

    o cale cule cunde svh

    If there are bhikus, bhikus, upsakas, or upsiks who memo rize and recite this

    dhra 800,000 times, their deadly karma in every place, created over in nu merable

    eons, will be completely an ni hi lated. In every place where they are born or reside, they

    will al ways meet buddhas and bodhi sattvas. They will al ways have adequate resources

    and abil i ties to do as they wish. In any birth, they will al ways be able to leave the home

    life, and will have the abil ity to main tain the pure precepts of a bodhi sattva. They will be

    born in human or heav enly realms, they will not fall into evil des tinies, and they will al -

    ways be pro tected by all the heav enly guardians. If there are virtu ous house-holding

    men or women who recite and main tain it, their households will not en counter harm

    caused by dis as ters or suf fering caused by un ex pected ill ness. Everything spo ken to oth -

    ers will be truth ful and accepted by them.

    If the dhra mantra has been recited a total of 100,000 times, you will see buddhas,

    bodhi sattvas, rvakas, and pratyek abuddhas in a dream, and see a dark substance vom-

    ited from your mouth. If you have committed seri ous of fenses, you should recite it a

    total of 200,000 times. Then in a dream you too will see buddhas and bodhi sattvas, and

    also see a dark substance vomited from your mouth. If you have committed any of the

    five cardi nal sins, you may still not yet have this aus pi cious dream. Then you should

    then recite more, a total of 700,000 times to attain such a sign. In a dream you may even

    see a white substance vomited from your mouth, like rice paste, in the simi lar way.

    These are signs of pu rity and clean li ness in di cating that the karma has been ex tin -

    guished.

    Moreover, I will now teach what may be accomplished with this great dhra. Standing

    before an image of the Buddha, or on clean ground before a stpa, spread go maya on the

    ground to create a square maala, large or small. Set up of ferings of flow ers, in cense,

    ban ners, canopies, food, drinks, lamps, and can dles, according to your abil i ties. While

    reciting the mantra, spray perfume in the four di rections, and in the Zenith and Nadir, to

    seal the boundary of the maala. In the four corners of the maala and in the cen ter,

    place one perfume bottle. You, the mantrin, should be at the cen ter of the maala, fac-

    ing East, and kneel ing on your right knee. Recite the mantra 1080 times, and the perfume

    bottles will au to mati cally ro tate. Holding a bunch of vari ous flow ers as an of fering, re-

    cite the mantra 1080 times, and then scatter the flow ers over the surface of a mirror.

    Look ing straight at the mirror, recite the mantra 1080 times, and you will see images of

    buddhas and bodhi sattvas. You should then mantra with flow ers 108 times, and then

    scatter them as offerings, and the ques tions you ask will be an swered.

    If there is an ill ness caused by a ghost, mantra with kua grass, and then brush the sick

    person with it, and he or she will be healed. If there are young chil dren pos sessed by

    ghosts, have a maiden twist to gether a multi-col ored string using five threads. Then

    mantra one time for each knot you tie, for total of 21 knots, and fas ten the knotted string

    around the neck of the child. Mantra with mus tard seeds a total of seven times, and then

    scatter them over the face of the child, and it will be removed. Moreover, there is a

    method in which you stand before a sick person with an ink draw ing of him or her.

    Mantra with a neem branch and strike the draw ing, and the ill ness will be eas ily re-

    moved. There is also a method if there is a sick person who is af fected by ghosts, but is

    in a dis tant place. You should mantra with a neem branch a total of seven times, and

    then send an other person with the stick, and the ill ness may also be removed.

    Moreover, there is a method when one is trav el ing. Recite this mantra, and you will

    have no fear of meeting thieves, ban dits, wild beasts, and so on. Moreover, there is a

    method for dis putes. If you al ways main tain this mantra, you will never be with out vic-

    tory. If you wish to sail across great rivers and oceans, recite this mantra, and you will

    not have dif fi cul ties with wild sea creatures. Moreover, there is a method if your body is

    has been bound and impris oned. Recite this mantra, and you will be liberated.

    Moreover, there is a method for a coun try that is suf fering from flooding, droughts, or

    epi demics. You should prepare an even mix ture of sesame seeds and non-gluti nous rice.

    Use three fin gers to obtain a pinch of this mix ture. Then mantra with it, and place it in

    the fire to burn. Con tinue this for seven days and seven nights, in the six peri ods of the

    day and night, un in terrupted. Every dis as ter and epi demic will be an ni hi lated.

    Moreover, there is a method for the sand near a river bank. By means of a stamp, im-

    print an image of a stpa in the sand. Recite the mantra one time with the completion of

    each stpa, for a total of 600,000 times. Then you may see Aval ok i tas vara Bodhi sattva,

    Tr Bodhi sattva, or Vajrapi Bodhi sattva. You will freely attain everything you are

    search ing for. You may also be granted siddhi medi cine, or receive the prediction of

    Bodhi.

    Moreover, there is a method for circumambu lating an image of a bodhi tree clock wise.

    After reciting the mantra a total of ten mil lion times, you will see a bodhi sattva ex pound-

    ing the Dharma. You will be able to fol low this bodhi sattva if you wish.

    Moreover, there is a method if you beg for food often. Main tain this mantra, and no

    malev o lent person or malev o lent dog will cause you harm. If you are before a stpa, be-

    fore a buddha image, or before a reli quary, recite and main tain this mantra for a total of

    300,000 times. Return on the fif teenth day of the month when the moon is bright, and

    arrange a great of fering. For one day and one night, do not eat, and recite the mantra

    with correct mindful ness. Then you may be able to see Vajrapi Bodhi sattva, and this

    bodhi sattva will approach and in vite you to go to his palace.

    Moreover, there is a method if you are standing before the stpa where the Dharma

    Wheel was first turned, or the stpa where the Buddha was born, or the stpa where the

    Buddha descended the jew eled steps from Tryas tria Heaven, or a reli quary stpa. Be-

    fore a stpa such as this, recite the mantra while circumambu lating clock wise. Then

    Aparjit Bodhisattva and Hrit Bodhi sattva will appear, and your wishes will all be ful -

    filled. If neces sary, you will be given siddhi medi cine, and then they will in struct you on

    the Bodhi sattva Path. Al though one who recites this dhra may not have yet sat in a

    bodhimaa, all bodhi sattvas are his skill ful teach ers.

    Moreover, this great dhra of Cund is a great bril liant mantra teach ing that is spo ken

    by all buddhas of the past, all buddhas of the fu ture, and all buddhas of the present time.

    I also now speak it thusly to ben efit all sen tient beings, caus ing them to attain Anuttar

    Samyak sabodhi. If there are sen tient beings with little merit, who lack good roots, nat-

    ural abil ity, and the Factors of Bodhi, if they obtain hearing of this dhra method, they

    will quickly real ize the attain ment of Anuttar Samyak sabodhi. If there are peo ple

    who are al ways able to remember, recite, and main tain this dhra, they will all obtain

    immeasurable good roots.

    When the Buddha had spo ken this Great Cund Dhra teach ing, in nu merable sen tient

    beings left the dust and dirt far behind, and attained the great merit of the Great Cund

    Dhra. Now able to see the vast mul ti tude of buddhas and bodhi sattvas of the ten di -

    rections, they paid their respects and departed.
