    Chapter 87 - shiva slays andhakavaishampAyana uvAchaandhako nAradavachaH shrutvA tattvena bhArata |mandaraM parvataM gantuM mano dadhre mahAsuraH ||2-87-1vaishampAyana said:O the one of bharata race! andhaka heard the words of nArada and understood themeaning. The great asura (andhaka) mentally decided to go to the mountain of mandara.so.asurAnsumahAtejAH samAnIya mahAbalaH |

    jagAma mandaraM kruddho mahAdevAlayaM tadA ||2-87-2

    The one with great power (andhaka) assembled demons of great splendor. The angrydemon immediately went to the mountain of mandara, the residence of the great deva,shiva.taM mahAbhrapratichChannaM mahauShadhisamAkulam |nAnAsiddhasamAkIrNaM maharShigaNasevitam ||2-87-3The mountain, covered by large clouds, was rich with great medicinal plants. Largenumber of siddha-s were there on the mountain. The mountain was served by thepresence of great sages.chandanAgaruvR^ikShADhyaM saraladrumasa~Nkulam |kinnarodgItaramyaM cha bahunAgakulAkulam ||2-87-4

    The mountain appeared beautiful with trees of sandal (Sirium Myrtifolium, chandana),Agallochum (Amyris Agallocha, agaru) and Pinus Longifolia (sarala). The beauty of themountain enhanced with sweet songs sung by kinnara-s. Many elephants and serpentsresided on the mountain.vAtoddhUtairvanaiH phullairnR^ityantamiva cha kvachit |prasrutairdhAtubhishchitrairviliptamiva cha kvachit ||2-87-5At some places, where the forest in full blossom swayed due to wind, it appeared as if themountain was dancing. At some other places, due to the owing of different minerals, itappeared as if the mountain was smeared with pastes.pakShisvanaiH sumadhurairnadantamiva cha kvachit |haMsaiH shuchipadaiH kIrNaM saMpatadbhiritastataH ||2-87-6At some places, sweet sounds of birds could be heard. Swans with clean feet ew hereand there.mahAbalaishcha mahiShaishcharadbhirdaityanAshanaiH |chandrAMshuvimalaiH siMhairbhUShitaM hemasa~nchayam ||2-87-7Buffaloes with great power, capable of destroying demons were roaming on themountain. The mountain was decorated with lions, shining like moon rays. The entiremountain appeared like a heap of gold.mR^igarAjasamAkIrNaM mR^igavR^indaniShevitam |sa mandaraM giriM prAha rUpiNaM baladarpitaH ||2-87-8Many lions (kings of animals) roamed on the mountain. There were many herds of deer

    on the mountain. The demon, proud of his power, told the mandara mountain, whichappeared in the body form.vetsi tvaM hi yathAvadhyo varadAnAdahaM pituH |mama chaiva vashe sarvaM trailokyaM sacharAcharam ||2-87-9(andhaka said) You know that I cannot be killed due to the power of the boon given bymy father. All the three worlds, along with the moving and unmoving beings are undermy control.pratiyoddhuM na mAM kashchidichChatyapi gire bhayAt |pArijAtavanaM chAsti tava sAnau mahAgire |sarvakAmapradaiH puShapairbhUShitaM ratnamuttamam ||2-87-10O mountain! No one ever wishes to ght me due to fear. O great mountain! I am aware of the forest of pArijAta (mandAra, Erythrina Indica) which exist on your summit,decorated with owers that provides all desires. That forest is the best jewel here.tadAchakShvopabhokShyAmi tadvanaM tava sAnuja |kiM kariShyasi kruddhastvaM mano hi tvarate mama ||2-87-11Tell me where the forest is. I shall enjoy the forest which is on your summit. My mind iseager to go there. What can you do, if you become angry?trAtAraM nAnupashyAmi mayA khalvarditasya te |If I harass you, I do not see any protection for you.ityukto mandarastena tatraivAntaradhIyata ||2-87-12(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) When the demon said this, the body form of mandara mountain disappeared then and there.tato.andhako.atiruShito varadAnena darpitaH |mumocha nAdaM sumahadidaM vachanamabravIt ||2-87-13Then andhaka became very angry. Proud with the boon, he released a great sound(roared loudly) and spoke the following words:mayA tvaM vai yAchyamAno yasmAnna bahu manyase |ahaM chUrNIkaromi tvAM balaM parvata pashya me ||2-87-14(andhaka said) Even after requesting you, you did not respect me. Hence, O mountain! Iwill reduce you to dust. You can observe my power.evamuktvA gireH shR^i~NgamutpATya bahuyojanam |niShpipeSha girestasya shR^i~Ngeshvanyatra vIryavAn ||2-87-15sa hatairasuraiH sarvairvaradAnena darpitaH |(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus, andhaka tore the peak, many

    miles vast. The valiant andhaka rubbed the torn peak on another peak of the mountain,along with all the other demons, proud with the boon.taM prachChannanadIjAlaM manyamAnaM mahAgirim ||2-87-16viditvA bhagavAnrudrashchakArAnugrahaM gireH |As the great mountain with all its streams of water disappeared, suffered destruction,lord rudra (shiva ) knew about it and blessed the mountain.savisheShataraM vIraM mattadvipamR^igAyutam ||2-87-17nadIjAlairbahutarairAchitaM chitrakAnanam |nabhashchyutaiH purA yadvattadvadeva virAjate ||2-87-18Becoming special, along with powerful elephants in rut and herds of deer, with many

    streams of water and with beautiful forests, the mountain dazzled with splendor as before, suitable for the heaven.

(O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) By the splendor of the lord, the peaks which were torn and thrown, killed the valiant demons.kShiptvA ye prapalAyante shR^i~NgANi tu mahAsurAH |shR^i~ngaistaistaiH sma vadhyanti parvatasya janAdhipa ||2-87-20

    O the ruler of men! (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Those great demons whowere running after throwing the peaks were killed by the same peaks of the mountain.ye svasthAstvasurAstatra tiShThanti girisAnuShu |shR^i~Ngaistena sma vadhyante mandarasya mahAgireH ||2-87-21Those demons who are standing comfortably on the summits of the mountain were killed by the peaks of the great mandara mountain.tato.andhakastadA dR^iShTvA senAM tAM marditAM tathA |ruShitaH sumahAnAdaM narditvaivaM tadAbravIt ||2-87-22Seeing that his army was oppressed, andhaka became angry. He roared loudly and spoke

    as follows:Ahvaye taM vanaM yasya yuddhArthamupatiShThatu |kiM tvayAchala yuddhena hatAH sma chChadmanA raNe ||2-87-23I am summoning the owner of the forest. Let him come for ghting. O mountain! Whyshould I ght with you? We are killed by deceit in the war.evamukte tvandhakena vR^iShabheNa maheshvaraH |saMprAptaH shUlamudyamya devo.andhakajighAMsayA ||2-87-24When andhaka spoke thus, the great lord (shiva), holding a spear, mounted on a bull,arrived there for killing andhaka.pramathAnAM gaNairdhImAnvR^ito vai bahulochanaH |shiva with great intellect, with three eyes (see nIlakaNTha commentary) wasaccompanied by his followers.tathA bhUtagaNaishchaiva dhImAnbhUtagaNeshvaraH ||2-87-25prachakampe tataH kR^itsnaM trailokyaM ruShite hare |As hara, the lord of the group of bhUta-s, having intellect, became angry, along with hisfollowers, all the three world trembled.sindhavashcha pratisrotamUhuH prajvalitodakAH ||2-87-26

    jagmurdisho.agnidAhAshcha sarve te haratejasA |The rivers owed upwards. Water caught re and burned brightly. Due to the splendor of

    shiva, the entire directions caught re.yuyudhushcha grahAH sarve viparItA janAdhipa ||2-87-27chelushcha girayastatra kAle kurukulodvaha |All the planets fought against each other. O the ruler of men (O janamejaya!vaishampAyana continued). O the one who ourishes the race of kurus! At that time, themountains shook.pravavarShAtha parjanyaH sadhUmA~NgAravR^iShTayaH ||2-87-28uShNabhAshchandramAshchAsItsUryaH shItaprabhastathA |The rain clouds showered burning cinders along with smoke. Then the moon became hotand the sun became cold.na brahma vividustatra munayo brahmavAdinaH ||2-87-29

Cows delivereddogs.peturvR^ikShAshcha medinyAmachChinnA bhasmasAtkR^itAH ||2-87-30bAdhante vR^iShabhA gAshcha gAvashchAruruhurvR^iShAn |Trees got uprooted, fell on earth, caught re and became ashes. The bulls molested thecows and the cows molested the bulls.rAkShasA yAtudhAnAshcha pishAchAshchApi sarvashaH ||2-87-31viparItaM jagaddR^iShTvA mahAdevastAthAgatam |Demons, evil spirits and ogres were seen all over. As the great lord arrived there thus andsaw that the entire world appeared upside down.mumocha bhagavA~nChUlaM pradIptAgnisamaprabham ||2-87-32tatpapAta rahotsR^iShTamandhakorasi durddharam |bhasmasAchchAkarodraudramandhakaM sAdhukaNTakam ||2-87-33

    The lord released his spear, having splendor as blazing re. That terrible spear struck onthe chest of andhaka. It reduced the terrible demon andhaka, a thorn for the good people,to ashes.tato devagaNAH sarve munayashcha tapodhanAH | vadavAHsha~NkaraM tuShTuvushchaiva jagachChatrau nibarhite ||2-87-34Then the groups of deva-s, all the sages having wealth of penance praised and pleasedsha~Nkara (shiva) as he killed the enemy of the world.devadundubhayo neduH puShpavR^iShTiH papAta ha |trailokyaM nirvR^itaM chAsInnarendra vigatajvaram ||2-87-35O the indra of men! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued). The divine drums sounded

    and owers showered. All the three worlds became satised with the distress removed.prajagurdevagandharvA nanR^itushchApsaro gaNAH |

    jepushcha brAhmaNA vedAnIjushcha kratubhistadA ||2-87-36The deva-s and gandharva-s sang and the divine women danced. The brAhmin-s chantedthe veda-s and performed sacrices.grahAH prakR^itimApedurUhurnadyo yathA purA |na jajvAla jale vahnirAshAH sarvAH prasedire ||2-87-37The planets returned to their positions. The streams owed as before. Fire did not blazein water and all the directions became clear.mandaraH parvatashreShThaH punareva rarAja ha |shriyA paramayA juShTaH sarvatejaHsamuchChrayAt ||2-87-38The best among the mountains, mandara dazzled again with all the prosperity due to theourishing splendor.. reme somashcha bhagavAnpArijAtavane haraH |suprachArAnsurAnkR^itvA shakrAdIndharmataH prabhuH ||2-87-39Thus, the lord hara (shiva) created a situation for deva-s such as indra to move aroundaccording to dharma and enjoyed in the forest of pArijAta (mandAra, Erythrina Indica)with umA.iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe viShNuparvaNi andhakavadhe
