baddha-khaḍgo vṛkodaraḥ
ददश तन रय f fsaw a delightful forest
dadarśa tad vanaṁ ramyaṁ
देवगधवसेवतम ्|| frequented by celestial beings.deva-gandharva-sevitam (175.5)

bhujaṅgaṁ loma-harṣaṇam

लहत सृणी मु || licking its mouth again and again.lihantaṁ sṛkkiṇī muhuḥ (175.14)
स भीम सहसायेयTh t k dd l h d BhiThat snake suddenly approached Bhima.sa bhīmaṁ sahasābhyetya
पदृाकु धता ेभृशम ्| It hIt was very hungry.pṛdākuḥ kṣudhito bhṛśam
जाहाजगरा ेाहाेThe cobra grasped him jagrāhājagaro grāho
भुजयाेभयाबेलात ्|| with the strength of its two arms.bhujayor ubhayor balāt (175.16)

भुजगेन वशीकृत | bd d b th t ksubdued by that snake,
bhujagena vaśīkṛtaḥ
न चैनमशकरcould not dona cainam aśakad vīraḥ
कथितबाधतम ्|| anything to overpower it.kathañcit pratibādhitum (175.19,21)
उवाच च महासपBhi id t th t tBhima said to the great serpent,uvāca ca mahāsarpaṁ
कामया ूह पग | "O k l t ll"O snake, please tell me,kāmayā brūhi pannaga
कव भा ेभजुगेwho are you? O greatest of snakes,kas tvaṁ bho bhujaga-śreṣṭha
क मया च करयस || what will you do with me?kiṁ mayā ca kariṣyasi (176.2)

नषा ेनाम राजषर्I th di i N h hI am the divine sage, Nahusha.nahuṣo nāma rājarṣir
य त ेाेमागत | Y t h h d fYou must have heard of me.vyaktaṁ te śrotram āgataḥ
दा व धतयाFor this hungry snake, due to blessingsdiṣṭyā tvaṁ kṣudhitasyādya
देवभैा ेमहाभुज || of the gods, you are my food, O mighty one!devair bhakṣo mahābhuja (176.13,10)
साऽेह शापादगययD t th f A tDue to the curse of Agastyaso 'haṁ śāpād agastyasya
ाणानवमय च | d i lt t b hand my insults to brahmanas,
brāhmaṇān avamanya ca
इमामवथामाप I have assumed this form.imām avasthām āpannaḥ
पय दैवमद मम || Look at my bad fortune!paśya daivam idaṁ mama (176.14)
यत त ेयाताान्"If ti"If your questionsyas tu te vyāhṛtān praśnān
तयूाशषेवत ्| t d b iget answered by a wise person,
pratibrūyād viśeṣavit
स वा माेयता शापाद्I will free you from this curse,"sa tvāṁ mokṣayitā śāpād
इित मामवीष || thus Rishi Agastya said to me.iti mām abravīd ṛṣiḥ (176.21)
तमवुाच महाबार्The mighty Bhima said tam uvāca mahābāhur
मसेना ेभुजमम् | to the snake,bhīmaseno bhujaṅgamam
न त ेकुये महासप"O great snake, I am not angry at you.na te kupye mahāsarpa
न चाान वगहय े|| Nor am I angry with myself."na cātmānaṁ vigarhaye (176.25)
दैव पुषकारेण"Merely with human effort,daivaṁ puruṣa-kāreṇa
का ेिनविततमहित | who can prevent what God has ordained?ko nivartitum arhati
दैवमेव पर मयेI consider destiny supreme;daivam eva paraṁ manye
पुषाथाे िनरथक || human effort is futile."puruṣārtho nirarthakaḥ (176.27)

दयत ातर वीरम ्seeing his mighty brother in a pitiable condition,dayitaṁ bhrātaraṁ vīram
इद वचनमवीत् || said this ...idaṁ vacanam abravīt (177.1)
कुतीमात कथममाम्"O f K ti h h"O son of Kunti, how have kuntī-mātaḥ katham imām
अापद वमवावान् | f ll i t thi t t h ?you fallen into this catstrophe?
āpadaṁ tvam avāptavān
काय पवताभाेगAnd who is this great snake,kaś cāyaṁ parvatābhoga-

स धमराजमालयBhi i Y dhi htiBhima, seeing Yudhishtira,sa dharmarājam ālakṣya

कथयामास तसवt ld hi thitold him everythingkathayāmāsa tat sarvaṁ

युधर उवाचY dhi hti id (t Aj )Yudhishtira said (to Ajagara),yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
कमाय वदवा वाGaining or knowing whatkim āhṛtya viditvā vā
ीितत ेयाजुम | ill i f O k ?will satisfy you, O snake?
prītis te syād bhujaṅgama
कमाहार यछामWhat food shall I bring?kim āhāraṁ prayacchāmi
कथ मुेवािनमम् || Under what conditions will you free him?kathaṁ muñced bhavān imam (177.5)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
ानुारतात वThese questions of mine -praśnān uccāritāṁs tu tvaṁ
याहरयस चेम | if hif you can answer them,vyāhariṣyasi cen mama
अथ पामाेयामthen I will freeatha paścād vimokṣyāmi
ातर त ेवकृादेरम ्|| your brother, Bhima.bhrātaraṁ te vṛkodaram (177.12)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
ूह सप यथाकामO snake, question me as you please.brūhi sarpa yathā-kāmaṁ
ितवयाम त ेवच | I ill iI will answer your questionsprativakṣyāmi te vacaḥ
अप चेछ या ीितम्if I can bring satisfaction api cec chaknuyāṁ prītim
अाहत त ेभजुम || to you, O snake.āhartuṁ te bhujaṅgama (177.13)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
ाण का ेभवेाजन्O King, who is a brahmana?brāhmaṇaḥ ko bhaved rājan
वे क च युधर | A d h h ld b k O Y dhi h hi ?And what should be known, O Yudhishthira?vedyaṁ kiṁ ca yudhiṣṭhira
वीितमित वा हTell me. You are extremely intelligent,bravīhy atimatiṁ tvāṁ hi
वाैरनुममीमहे || as I can tell from your speech.vākyair anumimīmahe (177.15)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
सय दान मा शीलम्Truthfulness, generosity, patience, courtesy,satyaṁ dānaṁ kṣamā śīlam
अानशृय दमा ेघणृा | i lf l dcompassion, self-control, tenderness -
anṛśaṁsyaṁ damo ghṛṇā
यत ेय नागेone in whom these are seen, O greatest of snakes,dṛśyante yatra nāgendra
स ाण इित तृ || he is a brahmana. Thus is it known.sa brāhmaṇa iti smṛtaḥ (177.16)
वे सप पर O snake, what is to be known is brahmanvedyaṁ sarpa paraṁ brahma
िनदुखमसख च यत् | hi h i f f i d lwhich is free from pain and pleasure,
nirduḥkham asukhaṁ ca yat
य गवा न शाेचतattaining which one suffers not.yatra gatvā na śocanti
भवत क ववतम ्|| What do you say?bhavataḥ kiṁ vivakṣitam (177.17)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
शूेवप च सय चEven in shudras are found truthfulness,śūdreṣvapi ca satyaṁ ca
दानमाधे एव च | igenerosity, non-anger,
dānam akrodha eva ca
अानशृयमहसा चcompassion, harmlessness,ānṛśaṁsyam ahiṁsā ca
घृणा चैव युधर || and tenderness, O Yudhishthira.ghṛṇā caiva yudhiṣṭhira (177.18)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
शूे चतैवेयA shudra in whom these virtues existśūdre caitad bhavel lakṣyaṁ
ज ेत न वत े| d i b i h h d iand a twice-born in whom they do not exist -
dvije tac ca na vidyate
न व ैशूा ेभवेाेthat shudra is not a shudra,na vai śūdro bhavec chūdro
ाणा ेन च ाण || and that brahmana is not a brahmana.brāhmaṇo na ca brāhmaṇaḥ (177.20)
यैतयत ेसपO snake, in whom these virtues exist,yatraital lakṣyate sarpa
वृ स ाण ृत | h i b hhe is a brahmana.vṛttaṁ sa brāhmaṇaḥ smṛtaḥ
यैत भवेसपO snake, in whom these virtues do not exist,yatraitan na bhavet sarpa
त शूमित िनदशते ्|| he is a shudra. Thus is it taught.taṁ śūdram iti nirdiśet (177.21)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
यद त ेवृता ेराजन्O King, if you say that by virtuesyadi te vṛttato rājan
ाण समीत| b h i i da brahmana is recognized,
brāhmaṇaḥ prasamīkṣitaḥ
यथा जािततदायुन्then the family one is born to has no meaningvyarthā jātis tadāyuṣman
कृितयाव यते || when these virtues are not seen.kṛtir yāvan na dṛśyate (177.25)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
जाितर महासप O t i k th f il f bi thO great, wise snake, the family of birth jātir atra mahāsarpa
मनुयव ेमहामते | f h b ifor a human being,manuṣyatve mahāmate
सरासववणानाd t i t i t f th tdue to intermixture of the castes,saṅkarāt sarva-varṇānāṁ
दुपरयेित म ेमित || i h d t d t i i i iis hard to determine, in my opinion.duṣparīkṣyeti me matiḥ (177.26)
वृया शूसमा ेषेB i t i lik h dBy virtues, one is like a shudravṛttyā śūdrasamo hyeṣa
यावेदे न जायते | l h i t i iti t d i t V di t das long as he is not initiated into Vedic study.
yāvad vede na jāyate
अेव मितैधेI thi tt th diff t i iIn this matter, there are different opinions,asminn evaṁ mati-dvaidhe
मनु वायुवाऽेवीत ्|| S bh M h t htas Svayambhu Manu has taught.
manuḥ svāyambhuvo 'bravīt (177.30)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
तु वदतवेयI h h d h t I d t kI have heard what I need to knowśrutaṁ vidita-vedyasya
तव वा युधर | th h d Y dhi hthithrough your words, Yudhishthira.tava vākyaṁ yudhiṣṭhira
भयेयमह काद्How could I eatbhakṣayeyam ahaṁ kasmād
तर त ेवृकादेरम् || your brother, Bhima?bhrātaraṁ te vṛkodaram (177.33)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
दानाा सप सयााB t it d t thf lBetween generosity and truthfulness,dānād vā sarpa satyād vā
कमता ेगु यते | hi h i l bl ?which is more valuable?
kim ato guru dṛśyate
अहसाययाेवैOf ffOf harmlessness and affection,ahiṁsā-priyayoś caiva
गुलाघवमुयताम ्|| which is more valuable and which is less?guru-lāghavam ucyatām (178.3)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
दान ेरतव सय च C it t t h it t thf lCommitment to charity, truthfulness, dāne ratatvaṁ satyaṁ ca
अहसा यमेव च | h l d ff tiharmlessness and affection --ahiṁsā priyam eva ca
एषा कायगरयवाद्f ffaccording to the value of their effects,
eṣāṁ kārya-garīyastvād
यते गुलाघवम् || their value or lack of value is known.dṛśyate guru-lāghavam (178.4)
काानयाेगाTh h itThan some charity,kasmāccid dāna-yogād dhi
सयमेव वशयते | t thf l i b tttruthfulness is better.satyam eva viśiṣyate
सयवाा राजेf OThan truthfulness, O King,
satya-vākyāc ca rājendra
कान वशयते || some charity is better.kiñcid dānaṁ viśiṣyate (178.5)
अहसा यत ेगुवीHarmlessness is known to be valuable.ahiṁsā dṛśyate gurvī
तत यमयते | Then again, affection is valuable.tataś ca priyam iṣyate
एवमेतवेाजन्Thus, O King, this evam etad bhaved rājan
कायापेमनतरम ्|| depends on the effects that arise.kāryāpekṣam anantaram (178.6,7)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
कथ वगे गित सपO k h i h h dO snake, how is heaven reachedkathaṁ svarge gatiḥ sarpa
कमणा च फल वम ्| d h th f it f ' ti t iand how are the fruits of one's actions certain
karmaṇāṁ ca phalaṁ dhruvam
अशररय येतf ?for one who has died? As you understandaśarīrasya dṛśyeta
वषया वीह मे || this matter, tell me.viṣayāṁś ca bravīhi me (178.8)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
िता ेव ैगतया ेराजन्O Ki th th thO King, there are three pathstisro vai gatayo rājan
परा वकमभ | b d d t ' kobserved due to one's karma:
paridṛṣṭāḥ svakarmabhiḥ
मानुय वगवासhuman birth, dwelling in heaven,mānuṣyaṁ svarga-vāsaś ca
ितययािेन तधा || and birth as an animal. It is threefold.tiryag-yoniś ca tat-tridhā (178.9)
त व ैमानषुााकेाद्From human birth,tatra vai mānuṣāl lokād
दानादभरतत | due to generosity, etc.dānādibhir atandritaḥ
अहसाथसमायुैaccompanied by harmlessness,ahiṁsārtha-samāyuktaiḥ
कारणै वगमत े|| heaven is attained.kāraṇaiḥ svargam aśnute (178.10)
कामाधेसमायुाेO h h d i dOne who has desire and anger,kāma-krodha-samāyukto
हसालाभेसमवत | h i h f l d done who is harmful and greedy,
hiṁsā-lobha-samanvitaḥ
मनुयवापरस्f ffalling from human birth,manuṣyatvāt paribhraṣṭas
ितययानेा ैसूयते || he is born as an animal.tiryag-yonau prasūyate (178.12)
युधर उवाचY dhi hthi idYudhishthira said,yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
सव वा कथ माहेH did b i iHow did you, being so wise, sarvajñaṁ tvāṁ kathaṁ moha
अावशवगवासनम ्| d lli i h f ll i t d l idwelling in heaven, fall into delusionāviśat svarga-vāsinam
एवमतुकमाणम्?due to such strange karma?
evam adbhuta-karmāṇam
इित म ेसशया ेमहान् || This is my great doubt.iti me saṁśayo mahān (178.29)
सप उवाचTh k Aj idThe snake, Ajagara, said,sarpa uvāca
समप चेरम्E i d bEven a wise and brave mansuprajñam api cec chūram
ऋमाेहयते नरम ्| t d l d d b itgets deluded by prosperity.
ṛddhir mohayate naram
वतमान सख ेसवाेAll who enjoy happinessvartamānaḥ sukhe sarvo
नावतैीित मितमम || understand not. This is my opinion.nāvaitīti matir mama (178.30)
साऽेहमैयमाहेनेD l d d b IDeluded by power, I was so 'ham aiśvarya-mohena
मदावा ेयुधर | f ll f id O Y dhi hthifull of pride, O Yudhishthira.madāviṣṭo yudhiṣṭhira
पितत ितसबुस्f fAfter falling and then recovering my wisdom,
patitaḥ pratisambuddhas
वा त सबाधेयायहम् || I now tell this to you.tvāṁ tu sambodhayāmy aham (178.31)
कृत काय महाराजM h b f lfill dMy purpose has been fulfilledkṛtaṁ kāryaṁ mahārāja
वया मम परतप | b O Y dhi hthiby you, O Yudhishthira.tvayā mama parantapa
ीण शाप सकृ ा ेमेMy harsh curse has been removedkṣīṇaḥ śāpaḥ sukṛcchro me
वया साय साधुना || having conversed with a saintly person like you.tvayā sambhāṣya sādhunā (178.32)
च ाणव चM ti b t b h d b hMy question about brahman and brahmanasbrahma ca brāhmaṇatvaṁ ca
येन वाहमचूचुदम ्| I k d f thiI asked you for this purpose.yena tvāham acūcudam
वत तऽेत महाराज OBlessings to you, O King!
svasti te 'stu mahārāja
गमयाम दव पनु || Now I can return to heavenNow I can return to heaven.gamiṣyāmi divaṁ punaḥ (178.42,44)

इयुाजगर देहH i k th hi k b dHaving spoken thus, his snake bodyity uktvājagaraṁ dehaṁ
या स नषा ेनपृ | being cast off King Nahushabeing cast off, King Nahushatyaktvā sa nahuṣo nṛpaḥ
दय वपु समाथायregained his divine bodyregained his divine bodydivyaṁ vapuḥ samāsthāya
गतदवमेव ह || and went to heavenand went to heaven.gatas tridivam eva ha (178.45)
