Hypertension in adolescents: incidence studyA retrospective Texan study showed that 9/15 adolescent

psychiatric inpatients receiving imipramine 75-250 mg/dayhad developed hypertension during treatment. Patients aged13-15 years had a significantly higher incidence ofhypertension than those aged 16-17 years and 4 adolescentswere hypertensive despite subtherapeutic imipramineconcentrations Hypertension developed within the first 7weeks of imipramine therapy With continued treatment, 5patients remained hypertensive without subjective sequelae,and hypertension in the remaining patients resolved Authorcomment: ‘Although other studies have noted the increase inBP associated with imipramine, this is the first study todocument a high incidence of imipramine-inducedhypertension in adolescent psychiatric inpatients.’Kuekes ED, et al.
