Reactions 441 - 6 Mar 1993 Imipramine Hypertension in adolescents: incidence study A retrospective Texan study showed that 9/15 adolescent psychiatric inpatients receiving imipramine 75-250 mg/day had developed hypertension during treatment. Patients aged 13-15 years had a significantly higher incidence of hypertension than those aged 16-17 years and 4 adolescents were hypertensive despite subtherapeutic imipramine concentrations Hypertension developed within the first 7 weeks of imipramine therapy With continued treatment, 5 patients remained hypertensive without subjective sequelae, and hypertension in the remaining patients resolved Author comment: ‘Although other studies have noted the increase in BP associated with imipramine, this is the first study to document a high incidence of imipramine-induced hypertension in adolescent psychiatric inpatients.’ Kuekes ED, et al.
