Obama Family Level: Novice Mid

Time Duration: 180 minutes (60 minutes x 3 days)

Objectives: Students will be able to:

Identify immediate family members and describe relationships Narrate in present tense Ask and answer high frequency personal questions Describe family members using a limited number adjectives Express their own and other people’s likes and dislikes

Preparation (Pre class assignment): Ask students to find out about their immediate family members. They will bring to class pictures of their own and their relatives.

Materials/Resources: Laptop, projector screen, bingo sheets, flash cards, PowerPoint presentation on Malia Obama’s family, various worksheets, teacher’s family tree

Activities:

Ø The teacher will introduce various relations through a presentation about Malia Obama’s family. The teacher will implement a variety of “input” strategies to ensure that students comprehend and begin to internalize targeted vocabulary and language functions. The teacher will also introduce to the class terms of ‘caacaa (चाचा)’ and ‘caacii (चाची)’ by explaining that a person’s father’s brother is called caacaa and his wife is called caacii. [Malia Obama-Family (PowerPoint Presentation)]

Ø The teacher will divide the class into pairs. Then, he/she will distribute two batches of flash cards, one with relationship expressions written in script and the other with pictures of the Obama family. When the teacher calls out a particular relationship, students will search the cards for the corresponding expression; they will raise the card with the appropriate script and also the card with the picture of the person from the Obama family who represents that relationship. This procedure will continue until students are able to identify all relationships both orally and in script.

Ø The teacher will distribute to the students a worksheet to match the relationships with the names of the people in Malia’s family. Students will interpret and match relationships with names. [Malia Worksheet-Match Relations-Family]

Ø Students will identify Malia’s family relations from the pictures provided and then write the appropriate expression under each picture. [Malia Worksheet-Relation Names Under Pics-Family]

Ø Students will match family relation names with pictures of their own family

members on ‘My Family’ worksheet. [Worksheet-My Family]

Ø Students will play Bingo in class with the help of Bingo sheets prepared from words in Malia Obama’s Family PowerPoint presentation. Each student will be given one such card. The teacher will then call out the word for a particular relationship; the students will cross-out the matching picture or script from their ‘Bingo’ card. Whoever crosses-out the corners, rows or the columns first has to shout ‘Bingo!’ loudly. At the end, the ‘Full-house’ winner’s name will be declared. [Bingo Game Cards-Family]

Ø The teacher will conduct the game ‘ या र ता?’- kyaa rishtaa with the class. (What Relation?) One  student  will   volunteer   to  go  out  of   the  class;  his  role  is  to  guess  the  word  chosen  by  the  class  by  asking  simple  questions.  For  example,  if  the  class  has  decided  word  ‘दादा-daadaa  (paternal grandfather)’, the volunteer has to ask questions like these: From which side of the family is the relation?  Ôिपता या माता का प रवार? pitaa  yaa  maataa  ka  parivaar  (father’s  or  mother’s   family)’   The   class   will   give   the   clue   ‘िपता-pitaa   (father)Õ.   Then  person   will   come   up   with   another   question:   ‘आदमी या औरत?   aadmii yaa aurat? (man or woman)?’ Answer: Man. Question: ‘िपता या भाई? pitaa yaa bhaaii? (father or brother?)’ Finally the volunteer will guess the answer. The class can play several rounds of this game as time permits.

Ø The teacher will restate in simple sentences some of the relationships represented by Malia’s family members: Malia has one sister, Malia has one maamaa, and Malia has no caacaa. Then she will talk about her own family using her own family pictures again using the same sentence structure (I have one brother, I have one sister, I have two caacaas, and I have one maamaa).

Ø The teacher prepares slips of paper with names of relations and places them in a hat/basket; each student randomly picks one of the slips. Students will circulate among classmates to find someone whose family relationships correspond to those written on the slip of paper. For example, one student picks up a slip that says ‘two brothers, one sister and one maamaa’. The student will ask his peers simple questions like ‘how many brothers/sisters/maamaa do you have?’ to determine who in the class meets those specifications. [Family Relation Slips]

Ø The teacher will have her family tree ready and present it to the class. The students will be asked to prepare their own family trees as modeled by the teacher and the same will be displayed in the class. Format in the link http://www.obituarieshelp.org/downloads/three_generation_family_trees_templates_tall_tree.pdf could be used to prepare the family trees.

Ø Now that the teacher has each student's family-tree with her/him, the topics for next day's Presentational task will be assigned to the students. Each student will

be assigned a particular relationship and will be asked to prepare to talk about a relation from his/her family tree. Students may include some or all of the following information: a) the person’s relationship to him/her, b) his/her name, c) where the relative lives, d) what he/she does for a living, e) one like/dislike of that person and f) use any one adjective to describe him/her.

Ø Now that the students are ready with their phrases, they will all play a game initiated by the teacher with the help of a Koosh ball. The teacher will start the game by throwing the ball to one student and calling out the name of a family relationship; the student will speak spontaneously about his/her relative; next, that student will throw the ball to any other classmates and call out a different relationship expression; the person with the ball will speak about his/her relative giving similar information.

Ø HOME WORK: 1) The teacher will ask students to watch the Hindi movie ‘हम साथ साथ ह (Hum

Saath Saath HaiN)’ at home. They will follow Ramkishan’s (main character of the movie) story carefully in order to create a family tree of Ramkishan’s family. The family tree will include each person’s name and relationship to Ramkishan. The teacher can inform the class that entire movie is available on YouTube for viewing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7udCAEsRm4. Or

2) The teacher will ask the class to watch any two episodes of TV show ‘Everybody loves Raymond’, identify various relationships and create his family tree with labels in Hindi.

As closure, students will prepare a brief description of their favorite relative and share that information with a partner.
