    Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i appeared al!ost one hundred years a&o in the district of Pharidapura next to the

    place called Tepa,hola in the illa&e of Va&yana8 In that illa&e7 which is situated on the shore of the Pad!a Rie

    he was )orn as the son of a Vaisya na!ed Va!si das8 Durin& his )oyhood his !other and father arran&ed his

    !arria&e and he re!ained in household life for al!ost twenty2nine years7 wor,in& as a &rain )ro,er8

    %fter the death of his wife7 he left his )usiness and approached Srila $ha&aat dasa $a)a"i7 re:uestin& fro! hi!the traditional para!aha!sa Vaisnaa $a)a"i dress8 %fter acceptin& $a)a"i initiation fro! Srila $ha&aat dasa

    $a)a"i7 who was a disciple of Srila 4a&annatha dasa $a)a"i7 Srila Gaur,isora traelled fro! illa&e to illa&e inVrndaana7 continually perfor!in& his worship to *ord Krsna for approxi!ately thirty years8 Durin& this ti!e he

    would so!eti!es trael to the holy places of pil&ri!a&e in northern and western India8 'e associated with Sri

    Sarupa dasa $a)a"i in 4a&annatha Puri7 Srila $ha&aan dasa $a)a"i in Kalina7 and Sri 0aitanya dasa $a)a"i in

    Khulia8 Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i )eca!e fa!ous a!on& the &reat deotees of Vrndaana and was &ien theappropriate na!e )ha"ananandi8 Een thou&h Srila Gaura,isora receied such exalted honor7 he neer secretly

    endeaored for een a drop of !aterial sense &ratification8 'e was totally indifferent to !aterial en"oy!ent8 Self2

    satisfied and alone7 he perfor!ed his his pure7 unalloyed deotional pasti!es in a deep deotional !ood8

    In the year 7 durin& the !onth of Phal&una 5March67 when the 3o&a Pith 5the exact )irth2place of Sri 0aitanyMahapra)hu6 in Sri Mayapura Dha!a was reealed7 Srila Gaura,isora ca!e to Sri (aadwipa Dha!a fro!

    Vrndaana8 Fro! this ti!e until his disappearance7 Srila Gaura,isora lied in different illa&es in the area of Sri

    (aadwipa Dha!a7 reali;in& the! as nondifferent fro! Vrndaana8 'e )e&&ed dry foodstuffs fro! thehouseholders of the holy dha!a78 so!eti!es offerin& the the food in his hand to the Supre!e Personality of

    Godhead8 To coo,7 he would often collect dry wood fro! the paths and he would wash used earthen pots that

    people had discarded alon& the roadside near the Rier Gan&a8 To clothe hi!self7 he would &o to the shore of theGan&a and collect and wash discarded cloth that had )een used to coer corpses in the )urnin& &hats8 In this way7

    always re!ainin& independent fro! the support of others7 he fulfilled his practical necessities )y usin& ite!s that

    had no alue for anyone8

    Srila $ha,tiinode Tha,ura would often cite the )ehaior of Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i to explain the !eanin&of nirape,sa7 9indifference89 'e often discussed the une:ualed renunciation7 pure deotion7 and attach!ent to

    Krsna that $a)a"i Mahara"a displayed8 $a)a"i Mahara"a fre:uently isited Sananda Kun"a7 a place within

    Godru!adwipa 5one of the nine islands of (aadwipa67 where $ha,tiinode Tha,ura spent his last days inretire!ent8 Srila Gaura,isora would co!e to hear Srila $ha,tiinode Tha,ura discourse on Sri!ad $ha&aata!

    and other topics concernin& the inti!ate conclusions of deotional serice8 $a)a"i Mahara"a would display feren

    enthusias! upon hearin& these discourses8

    0handri,a8 So!eti!es Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i would wear no Tulasi !ala around his nec, and he would hold a

    he would wear no ,opin at all8 So!eti!es Srila Gaura,isora would utter harsh sounds of dis&ust for no apparentreason8

    Een thou&h Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i was not learned in Sans,rit &ra!!atical rules7 still the purport and

    conclusions of all scriptures were lu!inous in his heart and character8 (o one could eer find an opportunity to

    sere hi! )ecause he refused to accept any ,ind of serice fro! anyone8 -heneer anyone saw his unearthly statof renunciation7 they could only re!e!)er the topics of Srila Ra&hunatha das Goswa!i8 Eery ,ind of opulence7

    such as o!niscience7 was always waitin& with folded hands to sere hi!8 'e was a)le to reeal the deceitful natur

    lyin& within the heart of any pretender8 Een if so!eone was not residin& in his icinity7 $a)a"i Mahara"a couldela)orately and scrutini;in&ly reeal that person+s cheatin& nature7 )ecause he was in contact with the Supersoul in

    the heart8 This opulence was not7 howeer7 Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i+s principal irtue8 'e exhi)ited the

    hi&hest standard of deotion to the Supre!e *ord7 Sri Krsna7 and )ecause of his exe!plary character7 he wasrenowned as the e!)odi!ent of the deepest de&ree of separation fro! *ord Sri Krsna8 'is pure deotion

    distin&uished hi! fro! all other Vaisnaas and eternally spread the luster of his lotus feet8

    Many people22youn&7 old7 learned7 foolish7 proud7 and reasona)le22ca!e into contact with Srila Gaura,isorawithout reali;in& his real identity8 The deotees of *ord Krsna hae this !ystic opulence8 0o!in& to consult withSrila Gaura,isora a)out their insi&nificant desires7 !any persons would &et su&&estions that were usually a cause

    of disappoint!ent8 Innu!era)le persons accepted the )a)a"i dress7 actin& as deotees of the *ord8 Far fro! )ein&

    sadhus 5saintly persons67 they were actually i!posters8 Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i neer accepted such a way olife8 The sincerity in his actiities was self2eident8 'is loin& attitude was such that een when he o)tained an

    opulent offerin&7 his renunication predo!inated8

    Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i neer displayed any distaste for persons opposed to hi!8 (or did he eer !anifest

    special affection for those ery dear to hi!8 'e would often say7 9In this !aterial world I a! all alone in !yserice to *ord Krsna8 Eeryone is worshipa)le )y !e89 Many !aterialistic7 foolish persons !as:ueradin& as

    /nce7 while Srila Gaura,isora was residin& in the dhar!sala in Kulia7 Srila $ha,tisiddhanta Sarasati as,ed hi!

    !any :uestions a)out the residents of Vrndaana and the arious deotees who were perfor!in& solitary worship

    there8 Srila $ha,tisiddhanta especially as,ed a)out the )hananandis7 who were reputed to )e perfect7 reali;ed soulSrila Gaura,isora lau&hed a&ain and a&ain upon hearin& this :uestion7 finally statin&7 9They are all i!posters89

    /ne )a)a"i residin& at Kusa!a Saroa was renowned as a &reat )ha"ananandi8 'e had a few disciples who were

    also reputed to )e perfectly reali;ed persons8 $ut Srila Gaura Kisora did not een sli&htly a&ree to the authenticityof their worship8 %fter so!e ti!e7 these 9&reat souls9 were afflicted with leprosy of the throat and left their )odiesafter extre!e sufferin&8 They had resided in the 'oly Dha!a with their intelli&ence )ent on sense &ratification an

    thus they would )ehae offensiely toward Srila Gaura Kisora8

    /ne day a youn& deotee7 ery anxiously desirin& to sere and reside in the 'oly Dha!a of (aadwipa7 ca!e andreealed his intentions to Srila Gaura,isora8 The youn& !an had !ade arran&e!ents to re!ain in the 'oly Dha!a

    and as a doctor treat sic, persons8 'e planned to )e& fro! the residents of the Dha!a and sell his !edicine on theside8 Then7 with the profits he could !aintain hi!self and &ie free !edical treat!ent to sic, patients8 'econsidered that in this way he could perfor! his )ha"an and at the sa!e ti!e perfor! the hi&hest welfare actiity8

    To confir! his plans he ca!e to &et the adice of Srila Gaura,isora8 -hen he arried and presented his proposal7

    pretentions in his intelli&ence when chantin& 'are Krsna8 Those who hae such intentions are considered less

    intelli&ent8 3ou should &ie up your )ad intelli&ence and )e&in the process of chantin& the &lories of the Supre!e*ord8 If anyone perfor!s deotional serice with your false intentions7 then one+s deotion )eco!es a product of

    lust and eerythin& is lost8 The ad!inisterin& of free !edical treat!ent for the purpose of self2presti&e and the

    desire to reside in the 'oly Dha!a hae no point of unity8 % person desirous of the fruits of his actiities can nee

    lie in the 'oly Dha!a89

    'earin& the instructions of $a)a"i Mahara"a7 the doctor in:uired7 9Therefore7 what should I do19 Srila Gaura,isor

    replied7 9If your actually want the result of residin& in the 'oly Dha!a7 then you should first &ie up all

    relationships with the idea you are entertainin&8 %)andon this !isconception of )enefittin& !aterialistic persons )distri)utin& free !edical treat!ent8 Those who are resolute in perfor!in& worship unto the Supre!e *ord7 'ari7

    will neer dischar&e any actiities unfaora)le to the Supre!e *ord7 and they will only perfor! faora)le

    actiities8 /ther then this7 all actiities perfor!ed will )e the cause of deep conditionin&8 If you want to support

    (aadwipa8 The )rah!acari thou&ht that if he learned Sans,rit &ra!!ar then he would )eco!e respected )y allpersons8 'e also )e&an to thin, that since $a)a"i Mahara"a did not ,now how to read or write that he would )e

    situated a)oe hi!8

    /ne day the )rah!acari ca!e to Srila Gaura,isora whereupon Srila $a)a"i Mahara"a said to hi!7 9%re you readinSans,rit &ra!!ar to o)tain wealth7 wo!en7 and presti&e89

    The )rah!acari then answered7 9I don+t hae any tyupe of )ad intention such as that8 I+! si!ply readin& it so that

    !ay understand Sri!ad $ha&aata!89

    Srila Gaura,isora then answered hi!7 93ou hae seen how the persons in the place of Radhadesa earn their liin&

    )y professionally recitin& Sri!ad $ha&aata! and thus you hae )eco!e &reedy for this8 3/u should &ie up theassociation of those who are not faora)le and si!ply ta,e to the chantin& of 'are K4rsna with deotees of the

    The )rah!acari did not listen to the instructions of Gaura,isora das $a)a"i8 So!e days followin& this the)rah!acari ca!e to Sril Gaura,isora and as,ed hi!7 9Please )e !erciful unto !e89

    Shortly thereafter7 Srila Gaura,isora was &oin& next to the )an, of the Gan&es Rier and he threw hi!self in8 %t

    that ti!e7 !any persons ca!e to rescue hi! fro! the water8 Srila $a)a"i Mahara"a )e&an to yell ery loudly79*eae !e alone. *eae !e alone. $ecause I hae not )een a)le to perfor! worship unto the Supre!e *ord

    properly7 I+! not &oin& to ,eep this )ody any lon&er89

    Many persons i!!ediately &rouped to&ether and were a)le to fetch Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i fro! the rier and)rin& hi! up onot the )an,8 %fter $a)a"i Mahara"a had co!e to his nor!al senses7 he said7 9-hy did all of you

    )rin& !e up fro the waters of the Gan&a1 That person who is liin& with !e has &ien eerythin& which I hae to

    Gaura,isora8 %fter sin&in& in ,irtan with Srila Gaura,isora dasa $a)a"i7 he was ta,in& prasada! with the deotees

    there8 In this way he too, with the deotees8 The followin& afternoon7 he too, a pair of ,aratalas and went to ta,e)ath at the Gan&a8 Goin& to the Gan&a7 he )e&an to sin& ,irtana ery ery loudly so that $a)a"i Mahara"a could

    hear hi!8 %nd7 he also )e&an to recite different Vaisnaa prayers8

    /ne day after that particular deotee had &one out to )e& al!s for the day7 Srila $a)a"i Mahara"a called one

    resident deotee oer and said7 9This person who is stayin& here is hidin& and &oin& to his own house and fro!there hi is pic,in& up !any !isconceptions a)out deotional serice8 Then co!in& )ac, here he tries to i!ple!en

    the! here8 %ctually7 instead of perfor!in& deotional serice7 he is i!ply perfor!in& offenses89

    Srila $a)a"i Mahara"a then said7 9'ow is it possi)le for hi! to )e !y disciple1 I hae not accepted anyone as !ydisciple in this world8 I could not een )eco!e !y own disciple8 'ow is it possi)le for !e to )eco!e the spiritual

    !aster of another1 If one is a)le to !aintain fro&s7 is it possi)le to )eco!e a Vaisnaa1 The attach!ent which a
