better prospects in terms of both margins and growth than standard household cleaning products; for example, US sales of personal care products are growing by around 5%/y while US laundry detergent sales fell 4% in 2005 despite sales of liquid products rising 6%. And in China (p 6), demand for speciality surfactants for personal care is expected to grow at an average annual growth rate of 28% till 2012. Demand for speciality surfactants is also strong from sectors such as I&I cleaning, cleaning wipes, coatings and automotive lubricants. Investments reflect these trends – P&G is in the process of adding 160,000 tonnes/y of capacity for fatty alcohols in Indonesia; Cognis jv Thai Ethoxylates has recently commissioned its 50,000 tonnes/y plant for fatty alcohol ethoxylate surfactants; Taiko Palm-Oleo has started up its 150,000 tonnes/y fatty acid, glycerine and soap base plant in China; and Brazil’s Oxiteno is expanding capacity for fatty alcohols as well as ethoxylation (p 3). Uniqema expanded capacity for speciality surfactants in the US and Rhodia is following suit in India, while Air Products bought Tomah3 to extend its speciality surfactants offerings to I&I and mining/oilfield applications. On the downside, these same factors are responsible for the closure in 2006 of Huntsman’s Whitehaven HDL unit, its last surfactants plant in the UK [ibid, Oct 2006], the sale of Colgate- Palmolive’s SE Asian laundry detergents to P&G, and Chemtura’s plans to address the poor profitability of its household detergents and surfactants businesses [ibid, Jan 2007]. Surfactant product launches during 2006 demonstrate similar trends. In addition, the formulators’ need to reduce production and development costs is increasing demand for surfactant blends and concentrates; for example, Steposol DG from Stepan, and Dehypound Advanced and Arlypon VPC from Cognis are new surfactant blends targeting I&I cleaning applications (p 3-4). DuPont’s Zonyl fluorosurfactants and Easy-Wet 20 from International Specialty Products also target I&I applications, while Air Products recently introduced Carbowet 106 and 109 for waterborne architectural and industrial coatings. After the acquisition IOI Corp’s fatty acid splitting capacity will increase to 700,000 tonnes/y making it the world’s largest vegetable oil- based fatty acid producer. IOI will fund the transaction, which subject to the required approvals is expected to be completed by Mar 2007, by cash and borrowings. In 2005, Pan Century Oleochemicals netted profits of Ringgit 15.52 M on Ringgit 285.55 M revenue. The Pan Century Group first set up operations in Malaysia in 1978 and commanded a quarter of the country’s market share in the 1990s. Currently, its single-location and vertically integrated palm oil refinery and oleochemicals complex in Pasir Gudang has an installed capacity of 1 M tonnes/y. IOI reported better performance for its fiscal year ending Jun 2006 owing to increased crude palm oil (CPO) prices and a better performance by the oleochemical unit. The average CPO price increased to Ringgit 1500- 1600/tonne in 2006 from Ringgit 1400/tonne in 2005. IOI expects prices to reach as high as Ringgit 1900/tonne in 2007. The PTT group, the principal shareholder of PTT Chemical, will supply ethylene oxide for the facility, with fatty alcohols to be procured from Thai Fatty Alcohol. Thai Fatty Alcohol, another 50:50 jv between PTT Chemical affiliate Thai Olefins and Cognis Thailand, will begin production of 100,000 tonnes/y of fatty alcohols in 4Q 2007, also in Rayong [ibid, Jul 2006]. Japan’s fatty alcohols market is projected to reach 300,000 tonnes/y by Jan 2007, in terms of fatty alcohol use by makers of dishwashing detergents. In related news, Thai Olefins and Thai Fatty Alcohol have awarded Uhde GmbH a contract to build what is touted as the world’s first integrated complex for biodiesel and fatty alcohol production at Map Ta Phut, Thailand [ibid, Jul 2006]. The $170 M facility will produce 200,000 tonnes/y of methyl ester, 100,000 tonnes/y of fatty alcohols and 30,000 tonnes/y of glycerine using palm oil.
