Evaṃ mayā śrutaṃ ekasmiṃ samaye bhagavāṃ vārāṇasyāṃ viharati ṛṣivadane mṛgadāve /

Tatra bhagavāṃ āyuṣmantāṃ paṃcakāṃ bhadravargīyāṃ āmantresi bhikṣava iti bhagavan* iti bhikṣū bhagavantaṃ pratyaśroṣīt* // bhagavāṃ sānam etad uvāca //

imau bhikṣavaḥ dvau pravrajitasya antau ete ca bhikṣavo ubhau antāv anupagamya tathāgatasyāryasmiṃ dharmavinaye madhyamā pratimadā anusaṃbuddhā cakṣukaraṇīyā upasamāye saṃvartanikā nirvidāye virāgāye nirodhāye śrāmaṇyāye saṃbodhāye nirvāṇāye saṃvartati //

tatra bhagavān pañcakān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma :

abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati?

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṃ – sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo sammāvācā sammākammanto sammāājīvo sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi.

Ayaṃ kho sā, bhikkhave, majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati.

cakṣukaraṇīyā jñānakaraṇīyā upasamasaṃvartanikā nirvidāye virāgāye nirodhāye śrāmaṇyāye saṃbodhāye nirvāṇāye saṃvartati //yam idam āryāṣṭāṃgikā sayyathīdaṃ samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyakkarmanto samyagājīvaḥ samyagvāk samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhir

aśakad bhagavān pañcakān bhikṣūn anayā saṃjaptyā saṃjñapayitum; dvau ca bhagavān pañcakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ pūrvabhakte avavadati; trayo grāmaṃ piṇḍāya praviśanti; yat trivargo 'bhinirharati tena ṣaḍvargo yāpayati; trīṃś ca bhagavān pañcakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ paścādbhakte avavadati; dvau grāmaṃ piṇḍāya praviśataḥ; yad dvivargo 'bhinirharati tena pañcavargo yāpayati; tathāgataḥ pratiyaty eva kālabhojī

yaduta samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṁkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiriti|

‘‘Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ – jātipi dukkhā, jarāpi dukkhā, byādhipi dukkho, maraṇampi dukkhaṃ, appiyehi sampayogo dukkho, piyehi vippayogo dukkho, yampicchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ – saṃkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā.

___catvāri khalu punar imāni bhikṣavo āryasatyāni / katamāni catvāri / sayyathīdaṃ duḥkham āryasatyaṃ duḥkhasamudayo āryasatyaṃ duḥkhanirodho āryasatyaṃ dukhanirodhagāminī pratipadārya-satyaṃ // tatra bhikṣavaḥ katamaṃ duḥkhaṃ āryasatyaṃ // tadyathā // jātiḥ duḥkhaṃ jarā duḥkhaṃ vyādhi duḥkhaṃ maraṇaṃ duḥkhaṃ apriyasaṃprayogaṃ duḥkhaṃ priyaviprayogaṃ duḥkhaṃ yaṃ pīcchanto paryeṣanto na labhati taṃ pi duḥkhaṃ rūpaṃ duḥkhaṃ vedanā duḥkhaṃ saṃjñā duḥkhā saṃskārā duḥkhā vijñānaṃ duḥkhaṃ saṃkṣiptena paṃcopādānaskaṃdhā duḥkhā / idaṃ bhikṣavaḥ duḥkham āryasatyaṃ //

tatra bhagavān dvir api pañcakān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma: catvārīmāni bhikṣava āryasatyāni; katamāni catvāri? duḥkham āryasatyaṃ, duḥkhasamudayo duḥkhanirodho duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyam; 1) duḥkham āryasatyaṃ katamat? jātir duḥkhaṃ, jarā duḥkhaṃ, vyādhir duḥkhaṃ, maraṇaṃ duḥkham, priyaviprayogo duḥkham, apriyasaṃprayogo duḥkham, yad apīcchan paryeṣamāṇo na labhate tad api duḥkham; saṅkṣepataḥ pañca ime upādānaskandhā duḥkham; tasya parijñāyai āryāṣṭaṅgo mārgo bhāvayitavyaḥ;

catvārīmāni bhikṣava āryasatyāni| katamāni catvāri? duḥkhaṁ duḥkhasamudayo duḥkhanirodho duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipat|

tatra katamad duḥkham? jātirapi duḥkhaṁ jarāpi duḥkhaṁ vyādhirapi duḥkhaṁ maraṇamapi apriyasaṁprayogo'pi priyaviprayogo'pi duḥkham| yadapi icchan paryeṣamāṇo na labhate tadapi duḥkham| saṁkṣepāt pañcopādānaskandhā duḥkham| idamucyate duḥkham|

Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, dukkhasamudayaṃ ariyasaccaṃ – yāyaṃ taṇhā ponobbhavikā nandirāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, seyyathidaṃ – kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā.

Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ – yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo.

Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṃ – ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṃ – sammādiṭṭhi…pe… sammāsamādhi.

tatra katamo duḥkhasamudayo āryasatyaṃ / yāyaṃ tṛṣṇā paunarbhavikā nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī ayaṃ bhikṣavo duḥkhasamudayo āryasatyaṃ //

tatra katamo duḥkhanirodho āryasatyo / yo etasyaiva tṛṣṇāye nandīrāgasahagatāye tatratatrābhinandinīye aśeṣakṣayo virāgo nirodho tyāgo prahāṇo pratiniḥsargo ayaṃ bhikṣavo duḥkhanirodho āryasatyaḥ //

tatra katamā duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipadāryasatyā / eṣaiva āryāṣṭāṃgo mārgo / tadyathā samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvācā samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ iyaṃ bhikṣavaḥ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipadāryasatyaṃ //

2) duḥkhasamudayam āryasatyaṃ katamat? tṛṣṇā paunarbhavikī nandīrāgasahagatā tatra tatrābhinandinī; tasyāḥ prahāṇāya āryāṣṭāṅgo mārgo bhāvayitavyaḥ;

3) duḥkhanirodham āryāsatyaṃ katamat? yad asyā eva tṛṣṇāyāḥ paunarbhavikyāḥ nandīrāgasahagatāyās tatra tatrābhinandinyā aśeṣaprahāṇaṃ pratinisargo vāntībhāvaḥ kṣayo virāgo nirodho (SBV I 138) vyupaśamaḥ astaṅgamaḥ; tasya sākṣātkriyāyai āryāṣṭāṅgo mārgo bhāvayitavyaḥ;

4) duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyaṃ katamat? āryāṣṭāṅgo mārgaḥ; tadyathā, samyagdṛṣṭiḥ, samyaksaṅkalpaḥ; samyagvāk, samyakkarmāntaḥ; samyagājīvaḥ; samyagvyāyāmaḥ; samyaksmṛtiḥ; samyaksamādhiḥ; so 'pi bhāvayitavyaḥ

tatra katamo duḥkhasamudayaḥ? yeyaṁ tṛṣṇā paunarbhavikī nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī ayamucyate duḥkhasamudayaḥ|

tatra katamo duḥkhanirodhaḥ? yo'syā eva tṛṣṇāyāḥ punarbhavikyā nandīrāgasahagatāyāstatratatrābhinandinyā janikāyā nirvartikāyā aśeṣo virāgo nirodhaḥ ayaṁ duḥkhanirodhaḥ|

tatra katamā duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipat? eṣa evāryāṣṭāṅgamārgaḥ| tadyathā| samyagdṛṣṭiryāvatsamyaksamādhiriti| idamucyate duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipadāryasatyamiti| imāni bhikṣavaścatvāryāryasatyāni|

‘‘‘Idaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasacca’nti me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṃ udapādi, ñāṇaṃ udapādi, paññā udapādi, vijjā udapādi, āloko udapādi. ‘Taṃ kho panidaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ pariññeyya’nti me, bhikkhave, pubbe…pe… udapādi. ‘Taṃ kho panidaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ pariññāta’nti me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṃ udapādi, ñāṇaṃ udapādi, paññā udapādi, vijjā udapādi, āloko udapādi.

idaṃ duḥkham iti bhikṣavaḥ pūrve ananuśrutehi dharmehi yoniso manasikārā jñānaṃ udapāsi cakṣur udapāsi vidyā udapāsi buddhi udapāsi bhūrir udapāsi prajñā udapāsi ālokaṃ prādurabhūṣi //

ayaṃ duḥkhasamudayo ti idaṃ bhikṣavo pūrve ananuśrutehi dharmehi yoniśo manasikārāt* jñānam udapāsi cakṣur udapāsi vidyā udapāsi buddhir udapāsi bhūrir udapāsi medhā udapāsi prajñā udapāsi ālokaṃ pṛādurabhūṣi //

tatra bhagavān pañcakān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma: 1) idaṃ duḥkham āryasatyam iti bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi; jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi;

ayaṃ duḥkhasamudayaḥ,

iti duḥkhamiti me bhikṣavaḥ purva-maśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśomanasikā-rādbahulīkārājjñā-namutpannaṁ cakṣurutpannaṁ vidyotpannā bhūrirutpannā meghotpannā prajñotpannā ālokaḥ prādurbhūtaḥ|

ayaṁ duḥkhasamudaya iti me bhikṣa-vaḥ pūrvamaśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoni-śomanasikārādbahulīkārājjñānam-utpannaṁ cakṣurutpannaṁ vidyot-pannā bhūrirutpannā meghotpannā prajñotpannā ālokaḥ prādurbhūtaḥ|

ayaṃ duḥkhanirodho ti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvaṃ ananuśrutehi dharmehi yoniśo manasikārāt* jñānam udapāsi cakṣur udapāsi vidyā udapāsi buddhir udapāsi bhūrir udapāsi medhā udapāsi prajñā udapāsi āloko prādurabhūṣi //

iyaṃ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipat āryasatyam iti bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi;

tat khalu duḥkham āryasatyam abhijñayā parijñeyaṃ mayeti bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi, jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi;

tat khalu duḥkhasamudayam āryasatyam abhijñayā prahātavyaṃ mayeti bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam (A 391b) ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi, jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi;

tat khalu duḥkhanirodham āryasatyam abhijñayā sākṣātkartavyaṃ mayeti bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi, jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi;

yāvac cāhaṃ bhikṣavaḥ imāni catvāry āryasatyāni evaṃ triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā nābhyajñāsiṣaṃ na tāvad ahaṃ anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbuddho pratijānehaṃ nāpi tāva me jñānaṃ udapāsi akopyā na me cetomuktiḥ sākṣīkṛtā /

yāvac ca (SBV I 136) mama bhikṣava eṣu caturṣv āryasatyeṣv evaṃ triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ na cakṣur udapādi, na jñānaṃ <na> vidyā na buddhir udapādi, na tāvad aham asmād bhikṣavaḥ sadevakāl lokāt, samārakāt, sabrahmakāt, saśramaṇabrāhmaṇikāyāḥ prajāyāḥ sadevamānuṣāyā mukto nisṛto visaṃyukto vipramukto viparyāsāpagatena cetasā bahulaṃ vyāhārṣam; na tāvad ahaṃ bhikṣavaḥ anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim

abhisaṃbuddho 'smīty adhyajñāsiṣam;

Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti. Imasmiñca pana veyyākaraṇasmiṃ bhaññamāne āyasmato koṇḍaññassa virajaṃ vītamalaṃ dhammacakkhuṃ udapādi – ‘‘yaṃ kiñci samudayadhammaṃ, sabbaṃ taṃ nirodhadhamma’’nti.

Idam avocad bhagavāṃ vārāṇasyāṃ viharanto ṛṣivadano gṛgadāve imasmiṃ ca punaḥ vyākaraṇe āyuṣmato ājñātakauṇḍinyasya virajaṃ vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣurviśuddhaṃ aṣṭādaśānāṃ ca devakoṭīnāṃ virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣurviśuddhaṃ / iyaṃ ca mahāpṛthivī atiriva ṣaḍvikāraṃ kaṃpe chinnam iva patraṃ vedhe saṃpravedhe purastimaś ca anto unnamati paścimo ca anto oname paścimo ca anto unname purastimo ca anto oname dakṣiṇo ca anto unname uttaro cānto oname uttaro cānto unname dakṣiṇo cānto oname madhyo ca oname anto unname anto oname madhyo unname / aprameyaṃ ca loke obhāsam abhūṣi atikramyaiva devānāṃ devānubhāvaṃ nāgānāṃ nāgānubhāvaṃ yakṣāṇāṃ yakṣānubhāvaṃ yā pi tā lokāntarikā andhakārārpitā tamisrā tamisrārpitā aghā asaṃviditā asaṃviditapūrvā

asmin khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe āyuṣmata ājñātākauṇḍinyasya virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur utpannam, aśīteś ca devatāsahasrāṇām; tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ kauṇḍinyam āmantrayate sma:

ājñātas te kauṇḍinya dharmaḥ? ājñātaḥ bhagavann ājñātaḥ; ājñātas te kauṇḍinya dharmaḥ? ājñātaḥ sugata ājñāta; <ājñāto> āyuṣmatā kauṇḍinyena dharma iti tasmād āyuṣmataḥ kauṇḍinyasya ājñātakauṇḍinya ity adhivacanam; ājñāta āyuṣmatā kauṇḍinyena dharma iti

Pavattite ca pana bhagavatā dhammacakke bhummā devā saddamanussāvesuṃ – ‘‘etaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasiyaṃ isipatane migadāye anuttaraṃ dhammacakkaṃ pavattitaṃ appaṭivattiyaṃ samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmi’’nti.

Bhummānaṃ devānaṃ saddaṃ sutvā cātumahārājikā devā saddamanussāvesuṃ – ‘‘etaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasiyaṃ isipatane migadāye anuttaraṃ dhammacakkaṃ pavattitaṃ, appaṭivattiyaṃ samaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā mārena vā brahmunā vā kenaci vā lokasmi’’nti. Cātumahārājikānaṃ devānaṃ saddaṃ sutvā tāvatiṃsā devā…pe… yāmā devā…pe… tusitā devā…pe… nimmānaratī devā…pe… paranimmitavasavattī devā…pe… brahmakāyikā devā saddamanussāvesuṃ –

yatreme candramasūryā evaṃ maharddhikā evaṃ mahānubhāvā ābhayā ābhāṃ nābhisaṃbhuṇanti ālokena vālokaṃ sphuranti nāpi ca te obhāsena sphuṭā abhūṣi / anye pi ye tatra satvā upapannā te pi tenobhāsena anyamanyaṃ saṃjānensuḥ / anye pi kila bho satvā upapannā / anye pi kila bho satvā upapaṃnā / ekāntasukhasamarpitā ca punas tatkṣaṇaṃ tanmuhūrtaṃ sarvasatvā abhūnsuḥ ye pi avīcimahāniraye upapannā /

bhūmyā ca devā ghoṣam udīrayensuḥ śabdam anuśrāvayensuḥ / etaṃ māriṣa bhagavatā vārāṇasyāṃ ṛṣivadane mṛgadāve triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ anuttaraṃ dharmacakraṃ pravartitaṃ apravartyaṃ kenacic chramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā kenacid vā punar loke saha dharmeṇa / bhaviṣyati bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukaṃpāya mahato janakāyasyārthāya hitāya sukhāya devānāṃ ca manuṣyāṇāṃ ca hāyiṣyanti āsurā kāyā divyā kāyā abhivardhiṣyanti //

bhūmyānāṃ devānāṃ ghoṣaṃ śrutvā caturmahārājikā devā ghoṣam udīrayensuḥ śabdam anuśrāvayensuḥ / trayastriṃśā devā yāmās tuṣitā devā nirmāṇaratayo devā brahmakāyikā devā ghoṣam udīrayensuḥ śabdam anuśrāvayensuḥ //

bhaumā yakṣāḥ śabdam udīrayanti, ghoṣam anuśrāvayanti: etan mārṣā bhagavatā vārāṇasyām ṛṣivadane mṛgadāve triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ dharmyaṃ dharmacakraṃ pravartitam, apravartyaṃ śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacid vā (SBV I 137) loke <sahadharmataḥ> bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti divyāḥ kāyā abhivardhiṣyante, āsūrāḥ kāyāḥ parihāsyante iti;

bhaumānāṃ yakṣāṇāṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā antarikṣāvacarā yakṣās <tam anuśrāvayanti> cāturmahārājakāyikā devāḥ trāyastriṃśā yāmās tuṣitā nirmāṇaratayaḥ paranirmitavaśavartino devāḥ; tena kṣaṇena, teṇa lavena, tena muhūrtena, tena kṣaṇalavamuhūrtena (A 392a) yāvad brahmalokaṃ śabdo 'gamat;

tena muhuttena yāva brahmalokā saddo abbhuggacchi. Ayañca dasasahassilokadhātu saṅkampi sampakampi sampavedhi, appamāṇo ca uḷāro obhāso loke pāturahosi atikkamma devānaṃ devānubhāvanti.

Atha kho bhagavā imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – ‘‘aññāsi vata, bho, koṇḍañño, aññāsi vata, bho, koṇḍañño’’ti! Iti hidaṃ āyasmato koṇḍaññassa ‘aññāsikoṇḍañño’ tveva nāmaṃ ahosīti. Paṭhamaṃ. [S. 5:420-2]

mṛgadāve triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ dharmyaṃ dharmacakraṃ pravartitam apravartyaṃ śramaṇena brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacid vā punar loke sahadharmataḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti divyāḥ kāyā abhivardhiṣyante; āsurāḥ kāyāḥ parihāsyanta iti;
