OBITUARY
Dr Sandy Logie
Sandy Logie, who died at the age of 62 in February, was a regularcontributor to the review pages of this journal. With his wife Dorothy, hewas an early member of Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons andwas in the forefront of Medact's work for appropriate healthcare indeveloping countries, and especially the Jubilee 2000 campaign for debtrelief.
He qualified from Aberdeen University in 1963, and in the course of histraining worked at the MRC laboratories in Gambia, acquiring a life-longlove of Africa. Returning to Scotland, he specialized in diabetes andendocardiology, becoming consultant physician at Peel Hospital,Galashiels. He took early retirement in 1992 to return to Africa - to Katetein Zambia - but tragically contracted HIV from a needle-stick injury. Backin Scotland, he continued to work as a locum consultant, following theguidelines of the expert advisory group on AIDS, and wrote of hisexperiences in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 1996.
With Dorothy, Sandy returned to Katete in 1999, and was horrified bythe extent AIDS was blighting the lives of Zambians. In a Personal View inthe BMJ, he expressed his fear that major action against AIDS, including anaffordable vaccine, might not happen until the pandemic seriously affectedthe rich north.
He will be sadly missed, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dorothyand their three children.
