Upākarma "Beginning" (Sanskrit: उपाकर्म), also called Āvaṇi

Aviṭṭam (Tamil: ஆவணி அவிட்டம்) and Janivārada Huṇṇime

(Kannada: ಜನಿವಾರದ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆ), Gamma Purnima (Oriya: ଗହମ୍ା ପରୂଣ୍ମିା),

is a Vedic ritual conducted once a year during the Hindu

calendrical month Śrāvana, when Brahmins ritually change their Upanayana thread accompanied by relevant rituals. The rituals include offering tarpana and a homa/homam/havan is

performed by offering ghee as ahuti (ref: 4th batch in the Pooja schedules).

While removing the old thread, the mantra means -"I remove with respect, the old broken thread by wear and tear, may the new one bring on long life and Brahmana's brilliance."

When the new thread is worn, the mantra recited means "I put on the sacred thread which is highly pure, is inseparable from God, is capable of prolonging life and is the foremost in the

accomplishment of a Brahmana. May such pure Yagnopavita bring strength and dignity."

Note: The ‘sacred thread’ for the ritual is provided by the temple at no cost; please check with priests. Take part in any of the (4) batches.

Sri Satyanarayana Vrata Puja -The ritual worship of Lord Vishnu which is generally performed on full Moon day or Purnima of every month.

Sri Satyanarayana Katha narration forms a vital and integral part of the Sri Satyanarayana Vrata Puja. In most of the Hindu household and temples, Shri Satyanarayana Puja is

conducted in a grand manner during every Purnima day.

The puja itself is from the Skanda Purana. Sutha Puranik, a Rishi, narrates the story to a group of Rishis who were performing a 1,000 year Yagya for the general benefit of mankind.

One who reads the story and one who hears it will be rid of

all woes and difficulties. Pray with faith and devotion that Lord Satynarayana may remove all the obstacles that you experience on the spiritual path.

Note: Temple will provide all Puja items to the participating Devotees. Puja participants are recommended to bring fruits and flowers.

On this Shravana Purnima day, visit the temple with your family and friends and participate in the significant Vrata Puja.
