The Vedas

“When there is a decline in Dharma and rise in Adharma, I incarnate Myself for the establishment of Dharma.”

“In today's world, righteousness has declined and truth has gone into oblivion. The whole world is filled with injustice, indiscipline, and evil behaviour. In such a chaotic state, faith in God is the only lasting remedy. Truth is the only refuge, for truth is God. Love is God, live in love. Devoid of love, one cannot live. Hence, one has to love God to receive the gift of love from God. It is only by love that God can be attained.” “Unfortunately, today, the Vedas have lost their pre-eminent posi-tion due to poor patronage. People who take to a serious study of the Vedas and chant the mantras contained in them regularly have become rare. A regular study of the Vedas and practice of Vedic injunctions confer all forms of wealth on the human beings. The fun-damental principles governing human life and destiny are contained in the Vedas. The Vedas are the gift of God for the welfare of the entire humanity. The Vedas make no distinction whatsoever on the basis of religion, caste, nationality, etc. The Vedic mantras can be chanted by one and all.” “It is Swami's wish that the Vedas be spread to every country, so that every human being, irrespective of religion, caste, nationality, etc., learns Vedas and chants them.” “The Vedas are not to be neglected. The secret of the entire creation is contained in the Vedas. The Vedas establish the goal and purpose of human life. Everything concerning creation, sustenance, and dis-solution of the universe is contained in the Vedas. The brah-macharya (celibacy), grihastha (householder), vanaprastha (recluse), and sanyasa (renunciant) asramas (stages of life) are rooted in the Vedas. People are able to realise the glory of the Ve-das now.”

Sri Rudram “As stated by the pundit who just spoke, the "Athi Rudra" consists of many Namakas and Chamakas. They sustain human life. From where did this power come? The Namaka and Chamaka are taken from the Krishna Yajur Veda. It is an all inclusive Veda, from which the other Vedas, Sastras (scriptures), Ithihasas (ancient legends) and Puranas emanated.” “Rudram is generally understood as a synonym to Lord Easwara. In fact, it is the essence of all the Vedas, namely, Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharvana Vedas. Another important feature of Rudram is the Ekatwa (Oneness) between the two parts, namely Namaka and Chamaka. The Namaka emphasises the aspect of detachment whereas Chamaka stresses the aspect of desire. But the essence of both aspects is one. What is to be discarded, and what is to be desired? The evil is to be discarded, and good is to be desired. Both are essential.”

Namakam The Namakam is divided into eleven sections, or “Anuvakas”. In the first Anuvaka, Rudra (Siva) is asked to turn away his Ghora rupa (fierce appear-ance) and to keep his and his followers’ weapons at bay. Having been pacified, Rudra is requested to destroy the sins of those for whom it is being chanted. This first Anuvaka is chanted to destroy all sins, obtain leadership and di-vine benevolence, protection from famine, freedom from fear, obtain food, and protection for cows, for the absence of fear from untimely death, of tigers, thieves, from monsters, devils, demons. It is also chanted as a shield (kavacha), to protect us against diseases, removal of bad karma, ensure prosperity for the country in general, and prays for family protection and removal of enemies (including, very importantly, those within us). In the second Anuvaka, Rudra is prayed to as one who pervades the earth and the entire flora and fauna. He is asked to loosen the bonds of samsara (illusion). This Anuvaka is chanted for the destruction of enemies and pos-session (improvement) of intelligence (wisdom). In the third Anuvaka, Sri Rudra is described as the Lord of thieves who exists in everything. He is Sarvatma; the indweller of all. In this context, we who are unenlightened have stolen the immortal status of the Self and re-placed it with our own limited conception of ego, and in turn it is Rudra who will come and steal our ignorance from us, restoring us to our natural status of enlightenment. In the fourth Anuvaka, Rudra is described as the creator and worker of all kinds. He is the cause of both the significant and the minor. In the fifth Anuvaka, Rudra’s existence in running waters is praised and his five activities are described (creation of the universe, preservation of it, destruction at the time of Pralaya, bondage in ignorance and the release of moksha). In the sixth Anuvaka, Rudra is identified with time (Kalarupa). He is de-scribed as the source of the different worlds, Shrutis (Vedas) and its essence in Vedanta. The fifth and sixth Anuvakas are chanted for the expansion of one’s assets (in a spiritual sense, all our virtues and noble qualities are our assets) and victory against enemies and evil forces. In the seventh Anuvaka his all-pervading presence in waters, rains, clouds,

storms and its various forms are described. This Anuvaka is chanted for the increase of intelligence (wisdom) and obtaining liberation. In the eighth Anuvaka Rudra is described as He who illumines other Gods and confers powers on them. He is seen as ever present in holy rivers and He who can absolve all sins. This Anuvaka is chanted for the destruction of enemies and possession of ones own kingdom (lands). In the ninth Anuvaka the strength and power of his attendants is celebrated be-cause they illumine the gods and the world and control the forces of the uni-verse. In the tenth Anuvaka Rudra is again asked to shed his fury and shower benevo-lence by displaying his Pinaka bow without arrows and to gracefully appear with his tiger skin on his body with pleasing countenance ready to shower boons upon his devotees. This Anuvaka is chanted for possession of wealth, cure of diseases, removal of fear, absence of all kinds of fears, having the vi-sion of Bhairava (Shiva in his most fearful aspect), absence from dangers and fears, blessings and the absolution of sins. In the eleventh Anuvaka Rudra’s accomplishments are profusely praised and his benevolence is invoked with unconditional salutations. This Anuvaka is chanted for blessings of one’s progeny, the enhancement of longevity, visiting of sacred places, and acquiring knowledge of past, present and future.

The Purpose of Life “One has to realise the purpose of human life. We are not born merely to eat, drink and make merry. The human birth is given to us to help our fellow human beings. Today, the knowledge that is acquired from the study of books is termed as "education". This is not real education. Real education is ‘educare’, by which the noble qualities that are in-herent in us are manifested in our daily life. In keeping with the saying Sarvada sarva kaleshu sarvathara Hari chinthanam, one has to con-stantly contemplate on God. That is the real devotion.” “The name of God is more powerful than the nuclear bombs. God's name protects the good and punishes the evil. Hence, if you continue to worship God, surely the world will be protected”. “The most important point I would like to stress is that you must de-velop a spirit of sacrifice. Man may have several desires. All those desires have to be offered to God to please Him (daiva preetyartham). Do not confine yourself to the self. Help is better than self. Whatever activity you undertake, consider it as something done for satisfying your heart, for the uplift of your Atma. This Yajna is conducted to realise the Atma Tattwa, not with a view to achieve some physical and worldly benefit.” • Italics -Extracts from Bhagavan’s Discourses during the Ati

Rudra Maha Yagna 2006.

Chamakam After praying and identifying Rudra with everything in the Namakam, the Chamakam is recited, in which the devotee identifies himself with Lord Shiva and asks him to give him everything!! The defining statement of Chamakam is called “Yagnena Kalpanthaam”, which means, “May everything in this world be offered to God.” Thus, the Chamakam is a compendium of prayers for the fulfilment of the auspicious desires of man! This prayer is intended for all people in general (and not just the scholars) and every thing to be cherished in the world is included in this ascent to the state of Jnani to attain Moksha i.e. eternal happiness. Chamakam assures granting of what you ask for. The creator makes no distinction between the things of the world and the other world. Both belong to him and desire born out of Vir-tue is really a manifestation of divinity and Dharma. Chamakam furnishes completely the ideal of human happiness and defines in the highest degree the desires and do not delimit to be asked or to be granted. In the first Anuvaka prayer is made to keep fit in the human being his vitali-ties internal and sensory organs and mind hale and healthy, a long and peace-ful and happy old age. In the second Anuvaka, the devotee prays for prominence and leadership, common sense, intellectual acumen, capability to face trying circumstances, Spiritual elevation, worldly splendour and enjoyments. The third Anuvaka develops an innate urge for God and meditative flights and spiritual ecstasy, service to Divinity and humanity and a condition where the world wants him and he wants the world for upliftment. The fourth Anuvaka assures of courtesy, fitness of the body and the best food for the body, cosy and comfort. The fifth Anuvaka asks for the Navaratnas, the precious stones and all the animals to sub-serve his interest and the qualified materials best in their form for his rituals. The sixth Anuvaka emphasizes the importance of Indra as a co-sharer in the offerings to the other Gods. The seventh Anuvaka lists the various instruments necessary for some and sacrifices in the “Homa Kunda”, the site of offerings to the fire God with Sva-hakara.

Page 8: Sri Rudra Ekadashinee Homam - saimandir.org.uk · Sri Rudram “As stated by the pundit who just spoke, the "Athi Rudra" consists of many Namakas and Chamakas. They sustain human

In the eighth Anuvaka, the worshipper makes various offerings into the Ya-jna internally, and each and every organ symbolises something in the exter-nal Yajna. The ninth Anuvaka is the prime prayer which consists of all the contents of four Vedas. The tenth Anuvaka invokes all the biological species to co-operate in his daily wealth and also for the sacrificial fire. It also involves higher spiritual elevations, and makes it as Jnana Yajna. The eleventh Anuvaka brings out the long list of benedictions asked for in the odd divine number and even human numbering. Chamakam roots are firmly implanted in the worldly desires ultimately leading to the divine ful-filment. It is prayed that the Divine is immortal, infinite and is the cause of earth and heaven, space and time, reborn after the end of every thing and is the presiding deity.

Yajna “People think that offering oblations in fire is yajna, but true yajna is offering oneself to God, please God and to become worthy of His love. Yajna should not be performed for attaining selfish ends. It should be performed for the welfare of the entire world. In Bharat, people have been performing yajnas and yagas since ancient times. Yajnas and yagas were performed even in Treta Yuga, but demons tried to disrupt the yajnas because they did not understand the significance of the Vedas. With the advent of Dwa-para Yuga, people made an attempt to understand the truth and significance about the performance of the yajnas and yagas.” “Being educated, people should understand the meaning of yajnas and yagas. In fact, it is necessary that everyone should involve himself in the performance of the yajnas and yagas. It only means that whatever actions one does should be to please God. We should have the firm conviction that whatever we do, we do only to please God” Just as bag of paddy sown in a field multiplies itself into fifty bags, similarly all the materials that are offered to Agnihothra (the fire-god) multiply themselves several times.”
