PROFILE OF SHRI AKELLA MALLIKARJUNA SHARMA VIOLINIST AND MUSICOLOGIST.
Born in 1938, at Mummidivaram, East Godavari District, Andhrapradesh. Shri AkellaMallikarjuna Sharma had his initial training from his father Late Ashwatthanarayana Murthyand later under Shri P.P.Somayajulu. An ardent admirer and follower of Violin Virtuoso,Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Shri. M.S.Gopalakrishnan. Shri Mallikarjuna Sharma is one of thefew Violinists who adapted his inimitable style of playing the Violin. His close associationwith Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Shri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy opened up new vistas of traditionalKarnataka Music and henceforth became his disciple.
After a short stint as a staff Artist, All India Radio, Hyderabad, he worked for more thanthree decades as a Lecturer in Violin in various Government Colleges of Music & Danceof Andhra Pradesh since 1961. He rendered remarkable service as Principal for 12 yearsand retired in the year 1996. A strict disciplinarian and a committed teacher, Shri MallikarjunaSharma has produced several good students. His duties as a paper setter, valuator andexaminer for examinations held in various universities are commendable.
A ‘TOP GRADE’ Violinist of All India Radio, several of his programmes have been broadcaston AIR and Doordarshan respectively. He has had the privilege of participating in theAkashvani Sangeet Sammelan concerts and the National Programme of Music, AIR, whichwon him wide acclaim. He has also been a graded Vocal artist of AIR, Hyderabad. Hehas performed extensively across the country in various prestigious Sabhas including theMusic Academy, Madras. He has accompanied several eminent artists of the country. Hehas several solo programmes to his credit. He has toured the U.K, USA and Canadaaccompanying Sri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy. He has also toured Singapore as an examiner.
A musicologist of great repute, his contribution to Karnataka Music is laudable. Anunparalleled exponent and sole authority on Talaprastara, Shri Mallikarjuna Sharma has
unravelled the mysteries of Prastara, one of the Tala Dasha Pranas. His extensive researchspanning over four decades brought to light several latent secrets which he discovered allby himself. He has penned a few books .His first book ‘Talaprastara Sagara’published in1985 by the A.P.Sangeet Academy in the year 1985 received the ‘Best book’ (in the finearts category) from the Telugu University, Hyderabad. His second book ‘Permutative Geniusin Tala (Prastara) in Indian music’ was the revised version of the first book. In his extensiveresearch he has later modified and re-published these two books in the names of‘Talaprastara Ratnakara’ and ‘Indian Genius in Talaprastara’ respectively. He also published‘Talaprastara of Nisshanka Sharngadeva’s Sangeeta Rathnakara - A critical interpretation’,under the Senior fellowship awarded by the Government of India and ‘Systematization ofPrastara Details of Deshi Talas’. His books ‘Sangeetha Svararaga Sudha’ in Telugu andEnglish have uniquely dealt with the intricacies of Raga Alapana and Svarakalpana. Aperfectionist to the core, he has prescribed several Laya exercises which will help studentsin rendering Svarakalpana. He has sung Svarakalpana exercises and all the Ragas andprovided a set of four audio CDs (mp3) along with the books.
His recent publication, ‘Sangeeta Vidyabodhini’ is a compilation of compositions notatedand sung by him for the benefit of students appearing for the examinations held by theGovt Colleges of Music and Dance (A.P). A set of three mp3 CDs is provided along withthis book.
He has extensively toured all the Govt. Music Colleges in the state for two years conductingLecture-demonstrations and workshops. He has been invited for Lecture- demonstrationsand workshops all over the country by various institutions of music. Currently, ShriMallikarjuna Sharma is teaching several students. In addition, he guides students onlinefor the benefit of those inside and outside the country.
Shri Sharma has worked extensively on teaching methods. Having interacted with severalstudents over scores of years, he has evolved his own teaching methodology and hasprescribed several lessons. Though unconventional, his teaching methods are novel, innovative and highly effective. He has designed a CD which comprises of all the lessonsbeginning from the basic ‘Laya’ exercises to the Varnas in 481 audio tracks. This mp3 CDalso contains definition of Gamakas with illustrations. The most significant part is thedocumentation of the Gamakas and hence they are provided with symbols and audioclippings, which are of great help to aspiring students of music.

Sangeetha Vidwan Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma garu is a musician and teacher par excellence. He has also a passionate love for one branch of Sangeethashastra viz., Talaprastara. He is, further, consumed with a noble passion to share his knowledge and experience, especially with futuremusicians and teachers of music so that they could carry his torch for future generations. This isfortunate. He is that rare kind of musician who translates abstract and complex music theory ofTalaprastara, Svaragamaka and Ragalapana into highly practical and immediately usefulinformation which can enhance both the creative and scholarly skill of the performer, that may beactively demonstrated on the platform. It gives me pleasure to acknowledge that I am in a smallmeasure, a humble instrument in motivating him.
The present work, ‘Systematisation of Prastara details of Deshi talas’ is a logical sequel tothe author’s series of books on Talaprastara. He commenced his investigations into, and expositionof, Talaprastara with his ‘Indian Genius in Talaprastara’, discovered anomalies in the treatment ofthe subject by authorities such as Sharngadeva and went on to correct them in his second book.Further, he found certain errors in the serial numbers accorded to some Deshi Talas in the printedversions of the books by early authorities such as Parshvadeva (Sangeethasamayasara) andcomparatively recent authors such as Tacchur Singaracharya Brothers (Gayakalochanam). It cannotbe said whether these errors are traceable to the authors or to the copyists. Sri Sharmagaru haspointed out these errors and has proceeded to correct them by working out each instancesystematically from first principles of Nashta and Uddishta. He has also stated these principlesand procedures, thus enabling the reader to verify his method and results. The present book isbasically of academic interest and of indirect benefit to music practice. Its literary style sometimestends to be opaque.
Sri Sharmagaru deserves to be warmly congratulated on bringing the benefits ofSangeethashastra within easy and ready access of the performing musician, who can now evolveand employ his (own brand of) creative and scholarly skills in musical practice deriving them fromwhat was once regarded as an obscure, abstruse or purely intellectual item of music theory. Suchattempts to interpret theory to serve the cause of contemporary music are always welcome.
I hope that this book will reach discerning readers and experimentally inclined practicalexponents of music.

PREFACE
All are aware that the Tala chapter of Indian music consists of ten elementswhich are called ‘Tala-dasha-pranas’ and they are 1.Kaala 2.Marga 3.Kriya 4.Anga5.Graha 6.Jati 7.Kala 8.Laya 9.Yati and 10.Prastara. Among the ten elements ofTala the last one, Prastara is the origin of all the rhythmical forms of the universeas mentioned by Vachanacharya Sudhakalasha of 14th century in his abridgededition ‘Sangitopanishatsaroddhara’:
“Sarveshaamapi taalaanaam prastaara maatrikaa mataaTasmaadaadau pravakshyaami prastaaram taala vriddhaye”
Thus, having mathematical basis, each and every rhythmical form of theuniverse consists of an authentic and specific serial number which is interlinkedwith its form.
In the annals of our Indian music literature there are only two treatises inwhich such serial numbers (though not serially) are furnished to some of the Talasfurn ished in i t a long wi th thei r names and Talangas. Among them‘Sangitasamayasara (Sanskrit)’ written around 12th century by Parshvadeva standsfirst. In it ‘52’ Talas are furnished along with names, Talangas and serial numbersalso and among them ‘25’ are found to be incorrect. And ‘Gayakalochanam(Telugu)’ written after a lapse of 800 years in 1902 by Tacchoor SingaracharyaBros., stands second. In it a new set of ‘158’ Talas is furnished along withnames, Talangas and serial numbers also and among them ‘43’ numbers are foundto be incorrect. The authenticity of such serial numbers could easily be obtainedin the process of Talaprastara. But, as the process of Prastara i.e., permutation islaborious and one life is not at all enough to go through all the innumerablerhythmical forms, some easy methods are made available in this element, Prastaraeither to obtain ‘the series of Talangas of a particular serial number of permutationin question’ or ‘the serial number of a permutation in question containing aparticular series of Talangas’ or ‘the total number of all the different denominationsof Talangas used upto a particular serial number of permutation in question’ whichare named as ‘Nashta, Uddishta and Kalita’ respectively. Basing upon theseeasy methods the incorrect serial numbers of these above Talas are found.
iii
After Parshvadeva, to avoid the embarrassment of furnishing such incorrectserial numbers to the Talas all the authors of other treatises have very convenientlyskipped off these serial numbers but furnished several lists of umpteen Talas oftheir own fancy even without hesitating to create Talas with their self-nameslike Nisshanka-tala, Sharngadeva-tala, Lakshminarayana-tala etc.
But, most unfortunately, no author of them had ever revealed these easymethods of Nashta or Uddishta or Kalita in an easily understandable manner tothe posterity. By all this, having totally lost the invaluable knowledge of the salientfeatures of this Prastara long long ago, presently nobody is aware enough torecognise these figures furnished by the above authors as serial numbers at all asthey have not been furnished serially.
To make aspirants aware of these serial numbers of Talas along with theseeasy methods of Nashta and Uddishta all these serial numbers of the above ‘210’Talas are taken into account and the different applications of these easy methodsare furnished here in detail for the benefit of the music world.
As this work is meant only to bring out the full details of these serial numbersof Talas furnished in these treatises, ‘Sangitasamayasara and Gayakalochanam’the needed details of this purpose only are furnished here. To obtain the full detailsof this chapter ‘Talaprastara’ the books 1.Talaprastara Ratnakaramu (Telugu)2.Indian Genius in Talaprastara (English) and 3.Talaprastara of NisshankaSharngadeva’s Sangita Ratnakara - a critical interpretation authored by me couldbe consulted.
I shall ever remain grateful to Dr. R. Sathyanarayana, the internationally reputedmusicologist and danceologist, for his able, kind, incessant and affectionate guidancealthrough my research and also for writing the ‘Foreword’ with his unfathomable depth ofknowledge.

CHAPTER-1Lists of talas furnished in
Sangitasamayasara & Gayakalochanam
In the annals of our music literature there are only two books on music in which the
serial numbers are furnished for the Tas prescribed in them and they are :
1. Sa g tasamayasra (Sanskrit) and 2. Gyakal chanam (Telugu).
The book 'Sa g tasamayasra' is written by Pr hvad va around 1165 A.D. In it 52
T as are furnished along with names, serial numbers and series of Tngas out of which
25 serial numbers are found incorrect.
The book 'Gyakal chanam' is written and published by Tacch r Si gar ch rya
Bros., in 1902. In it 158 Tas are furnished along with new names, serial numbers and
series of T gas out of which 43 serial numbers are found incorrect.
All the above mentioned Tas are furnished here. In respect of the correct or incorrect
T gas :
(a) they are shown in brackets if they are originally furnished contrarily than the required,
(b) the correct ones are shown just below the incorrect ones diagonally and
(c) the newly found correct ones are marked with an asterisk.
For example, in the Tas of 'Sa g tasamayasra':
(a) the 14th T a ' Ma ha' is originally furnished with the incorrect total value of the
series of T gas of 16-units instead of 8-units and so, the incorrect Tgas are
shown within brackets,
(b) the serial number '71' and the respective series of Tgas 'S O O O O S' of the 40th
T a 'Bindum li'contradict each other and so, the correct series of Tgas (O I I O
O O S) of the corresponding serial number '71'and the correct serial number (74) of
the corresponding series of T gas 'S O O O O S' are furnished just below
diagonally and
2
(c) the corresponding series of T gas of the 36th and 37th Tas 'Nandana and
Sr kandarpa' respectively, which are not at all furnished originally in the text, but
later found with the help of the easy method 'Nah a', are marked with an asterisk.
In the same manner other correct and incorrect versions could be identified and
understood.

CHAPTER-2
Talaprastara
Rhythmical forms are innumerable and they all are the derivatives of thiselement, Prastara in which the Talangas are permuted into al l possiblecombinations in a systematic process to avoid repetition.
Taking the number of different Talangas used in the process of permutationinto account the modes of permutation are divided into four kinds and they are1.Chaturanga-prastara 2. Panchanga-prastara (only the first two kinds are neededto be furnished in this work) 3.Shadanga-prastara and 4.Samyuktanga-prastara.Each one of these modes of permutation has two main divisions namely1.Akhanda-prastara and 2.Khanda-prastara among which the Khanda-prastaraagain has two sub-divisions namely 1.Heena-prastara and 2.Yukta-prastara. Allthese divisions consist of two different processes of permutation namely1.Anuloma-prastara and 2.Voloma-prastara and two key-figures namely 1.Sankhyaand 2.Mahapatala which are the total number of permutations and the total numberof Talangas used in the process of permutation respectively.
Even without adopting the laborious process of permutation there are veryinteresting easy methods to obtain the above two key-figures of Sankhya andMahapatala and also to obtain ‘the series of Talangas of a particular serial numberof permutation in question’, ‘the serial number of a permutation in questioncontaining a particular series of Talangas’ and ‘the total number of all the differentdenominations of Talangas used upto a particular serial number of permutationin question’ which are named as ‘Nashta, Uddishta and Kalita’ respectively.Among them, while Nashta and Uddishta could be obtained through Sankhya,Kalita could be obtained through Sankhya and Mahapatala together.
In Chaturanga-prastara only four angas Druta, Laghu, Guru and Pluta areused in the process of permutation and this is restricted only to permute theTalangas pertaining to Chaturasra-jati. In Panchanga-prastara the five angasAnudruta, Druta, Laghu, Guru and Pluta are used in the process of permutationand this could be applied to permute the Talangas of all jatis. Only these twoprocesses of permutation are needed and furnished here.
13
SANKHYA
The total number of permutations obtained in the process of permutation iscalled ‘Sankhya’. Even without making the process of permutation at all thereare easy methods to obtain the details of Sankhya up to the required units ofpermutation and they are as follows.
Note: 1. In Chaturanga-prastara the unit-value of any permutation shouldalways be cited in terms of the least Anga, Druta i.e., 1-DP (One-druta-permutation or Eka-druta-prastara), 2-DP, 3-DP and so on andin Panchanga-prastara the unit-value of any permutation shouldalways be cited in terms of the least Anga, Anudruta i.e., 1-AP (One-anudruta-prastara or Eka-anudruta-prastarta), 2-AP, 3-AP and so on.
2. Among the total of ‘210’ Talas furnished along with serial numbers,as some of them are of Chaturashra-jati of Chaturanga-prastarapertaining to the maximum of ‘24-units (Drutas)’ and others are ofTrisra-jati of Panchanga-prastara pertaining to the maximum of ‘28-units (Anudrutas)’ the respective details of Sankhya up to themaximum limits of these units only are furnished here.
3. General-key-rule: Write figure ‘1’ invariably in the left of theextreme left house.
1. Chaturashra-jati-chaturanga-prastara: Write figure ‘1’ in the extremeleft of the first house as per the General-key-rule and later write the total ofthe figures of the existing preceding 1st, 2nd, 4th & 6 th houses which are, here-in-after, called ‘Proxies’ representing the Druta, Laghu, Guru and Plutarespectively carrying the unit values of 1-Druta, 2-Drutas, 4-Drutas and 6-Drutas respectively.

NASHTA
Note: In the easy methods of Nashta and Uddishta there is the facility not onlyto check the serial number of any rhythmical form but also to cross-checkit again. So, to facilitate both the check and cross-check the full detailsof all these ‘210’ Talas are furnished under both Nashta and Uddishtaand the readers can simultaneously tally each other the respective detailsof any rhythmical form under each head of both Nashta and Uddishta.
Entirely avoiding the laborious process of permutation, the process toobtain the required series of Talangas of a Tala containing a particularserial number of prastara in question is called Nashta.
Rules for answering Akhanda-nashta:
1. Write the Sankhya line of figures up to the required units of permutation.
2. Subtract the question number from Sankhya and later from the remaindersubtract only the respective proxies consecutively and possibly.
3. If the 1st proxy is not subtracted write the Anga representing the 1st proxyitself and the same process should be continued until a proxy is subtractedsuccessfully.
4. If the 1st proxy is subtracted write the Anga representing the 2nd consecutiveproxy and leave off the 2nd consecutive proxy. But, for the consecutivesubtraction of two proxies write, in total, the Anga representing the 3rd
consecutive proxy and leave off the 4th consecutive proxy. But, for theconsecutive subtraction of three proxies write, in total, the Anga representingthe 4th consecutive proxy and leave off the 4th consecutive proxy. But, forthe consecutive subtraction of four proxies write, in total, the Angarepresenting the 5th consecutive proxy and leave off the 5th consecutive proxy. In this manner for the consecutive subtraction of more number of proxieswrite, in total, the Anga representing the immediate next consecutive proxyof the last consecutive proxy and leave off its proxy. In case of the absenceof either the remainder or the proxy or both the process of subtraction endsand no proxy needs to be left off.
18
5. After getting (i) an un-deducted proxy or (ii) a left-off proxy, to write furtherAngas, the process of subtraction again starts from the beginning subtractingthe respective proxies of the un-deducted or left-off proxy from the remaindercarefully observing the relevant rules and restrictions, if any (in the processof Nashta furnished in this work while the un-deducted proxies are indicated inround brackets the left-off proxies are indicated in square brackets and the left-offproxies in the left extreme of any prastara are omitted in the details).
6. If either the remainder or the proxy or both are absent one or more inferior(least) Angas (Drutas in respect of Chaturanga-prastara and Anudrutas inrespect of Panchanga-prastara) should only be written to fill-in the deficitvalue of units of the prastara.
Examples of Nashta:
SS-5.Madana - 4 - (0 0 S) S l
As per the version furnished by the author this Tala consists of Pluta andtwo Drutas carrying a total of (12+2+2=) 16-units thus pertaining to 8-DP. Butthe author had started this list of Talas with two permutations of 4-DP and laterfurnished seven Talas of 6-DP. So, as this Tala is in the series of Talas pertainingto 6-DP this tala should also be of 6-DP but not of 8-DP at all.
So, now, as per rule No.1 as this Tala is of 6-DP having the Sankhya of ‘19’write the Sankhya line of figures up to the 6-DP (refer table).
Later, as per rule No.2, subtract the question number, ‘4’ of the Tala fromthe Sankhya, ‘19’ and the remainder is (19-4=) ‘15’.
From the above remainder, as the 1st proxy, ‘10’ could only be subtracted(15-10=5) write the Anga, Laghu representing the 2nd consecutive proxy andleave off the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’ as per rule No.4.
Later, as per rule No.5, from the last remainder, as the 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘3& 2’ of the last left-off proxy ‘6’, could consecutively be subtracted (5-3=2-2=0)write, in total, the Anga, Guru representing the 3rd consecutive proxy as per ruleNo.4. Thus, the correct answer series of Angas of this prastara, ‘S l’ is furnished diagonally.
19
SS-6.Hamsaleela - 5 - IIIII
As per the version furnished by the author this Tala consists of two Laghu-viramas carrying a total of (6+6=) ‘12-units’.
So, now, as per rule No.1, as this Tala is of 6-DP having the Sankhya of ‘19’write the Sankhya line of figures up to the 6-DP (refer table).
Later, as per rule No.2, subtract the question number, ‘5’ of the Tala fromthe Sankhya, ‘19’ and the remainder is (19-5=) ‘14’.
From the above remainder, as the 1st proxy, ‘10’ could be subtracted (14-10=4) write the Anga, Laghu representing the 2nd consecutive proxy and leaveoff the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’ as per rule No.4.
Later, as per rule No.5, from the last remainder, as the 1st proxy, ‘3’ of thelast left-off proxy, ‘6’ could again be subtracted (4-3=1) write again another Laghurepresenting the 2nd consecutive proxy and leave off the second 2nd consecutiveproxy, ‘2’ as per rule No.4.
Now, again as per rule No.5, from the last remainder, as the 1st proxy, ‘1’ ofthe last left-off proxy, ‘2’ could be subtracted (1-1=0) write again still anotherLaghu representing the 2nd consecutive proxy as per rule No.4. Thus, the correctanswer series of Angas of this Prastara, ‘l l l’ is furnished diagonally.
SS-51.Rajachudamani – 450 – 0 0 l S l S
30 – l 0 0 l 0 0 0 0 l S :
As per the version furnished by the author the serial number and thecorresponding Angas of the Tala do not tally each other. So, basing upon theeasy methods of Nashta & Uddishta the correct serial number of the incorrectseries of Angas and vice-versa of this Tala are found and the Nashta portion isworked out and furnished here.
As per rule No.1, as this Tala is of 16-DP having the Sankhya of ‘6236’write the Sankhya line of figures up to the required units of permutation (refer table).
As per rule No.2 the remainder is (6236-450=) ‘5786’.
20
From the above remainder, as the 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘3485 & 1950’ couldconsecutively be subtracted (5786-3485=2301-1950=351) write, in total, the 3rd

UDDISHTA
Entirely avoiding the laborious process of permutation, the process to obtainthe required serial number of a rhythmical form containing a particular series ofTalangas in question is called ‘Uddishta’.
27
Rules for answering Akhanda-uddishta:
As per rules governing Akhanda-nashta the un-deducted proxies alwaysoriginate the inferior (least) Angas and the successfully subtracted proxies alwaysoriginate the superior Angas. In a question series of Talangas of a prastara thetotal of the proxies which are successfully subtracted and originated superiorAngas forms the Superiors’-figure (SF). Subtract this SF from the respectiveSankhya and the remainder is the answer-serial-number (ASN) of the prastara.
A tabular form along with a system to arrive at Uddishta is furnished hereto make the process easier. In this table the respective vertical lines of thesuccessfully subtracted proxies are indicated by the symbol ‘+ (plus)’, the left-off proxies by ‘- (minus)’, the un-deducted proxies by ‘x’ and the respectiveSankhya by ‘: (colon)’. Among them the total of the proxies pertaining to thevertical lines indicated by the symbol ‘+ (plus)’ form the SF. This SF should besubtracted from the respective Sankhya and the remainder is the answer-serial-number (ASN) of the prastara.
Always, as the least Angas, Anudrutas/Drutas remaining in the left extremeof any prastara should be presumed that they are written only to fill-in the deficitvalue of the prastara, such Anudrutas/Drutas should never be taken into accountwhile arriving at the SF. Such Anudrutas/Drutas or left-off proxies in the leftextreme of the prastara are not indicated by any symbol as they are not needed atall to be taken into account.
Examples of Uddishta:
SS-5.Madana - 4 - (0 0 S) S l
As already explained previously in the examples of Nashta the 4th prastarapertaining to 6-DP consists of Laghu and Guru and this is tallied with Uddishtahereunder.
In the process of Uddishta, as the first Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, isobtained by the successful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘10’ after which the second2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’ has to be left-off, ‘+’ is indicated in the vertical linepertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘10’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is
28
indicated in the vertical line pertaining to the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’representing the proxy to be left-off.
Again, as the next Guru, the 3rd consecutive Anga. is obtained by thesuccessful consecutive subtraction of the 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘3 & 2’ of the lastleft-off proxy, ‘6’, ‘+’ is indicated in both the vertical lines pertaining to these1st & 2nd proxies, ‘3 & 2’, being the SFs.
Thus, the SF i.e., the total (10+3+2=) ‘15’ of the proxies of the verticallines in which ‘+’ is marked should be subtracted from the respective Sankhya,‘19’ of which vertical line ‘: ’ is marked and the remainder (19-15=) ‘4’ is theASN i.e., answer-serial-number of this Tala. They are furnished in the rightextreme as 15/4.
SS-6.Hamsaleela - 5 - IIIII
As already explained previously in the examples of Nashta the 5th prastarapertaining to 6-DP consists of ‘l l l’ and this is tallied with Uddishta hereunder.
In the process of Uddishta, as the first Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, isobtained by the successful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘10’ after which the second2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’ has to be left-off, ‘+’ is indicated in the vertical linepertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘10’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ isindicated in the vertical line pertaining to this second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’representing the proxy to be left-off.
Later, the second Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is also obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘3’ of the last left off proxy, ‘6’ afterwhich the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘2’ has to be left-off, ‘+’ is indicated inthe vertical line pertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘3’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure)and ‘-’ is indicated in the vertical line pertaining to this second 2nd consecutiveproxy, ‘2’ representing the proxy to be left-off.
Again, the third Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is also obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘1’ of the last left-off proxy, ‘2’, ‘+’ isindicated in the vertical line pertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘1’, being the SF(Superiors’-figure).
29
Thus, the SF i.e., the total (10+3+1=) ‘14’ of the proxies of the verticallines in which ‘+’ is marked should be subtracted from the respective Sankhya,‘19’ of which vertical line ‘: ’ is marked and the remainder (19-14=) ‘5’ is theASN i.e., answer-serial-number of this Tala. They are furnished in the rightextreme as 14/5.

prastaras pertaining to 16-DP consist of ‘l 0 0 l 0 0 0 0 l S & 0 0 l S l Œ’respectively and this is tallied with Uddishta hereunder.
In the process of Uddishta, as the first Guru, the 3rd consecutive Anga, isobtained by the successful consecutive subtraction of the 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘3485& 1950’, after which the third 4th consecutive proxy, ‘610’ has to be left-off, ‘+’is indicated in the vertical lines pertaining to these 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘3485 &1950’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is indicated in the vertical line pertainingto this third 4h consecutive proxy, ‘610’ representing the proxy to be left-off.
Later, as the next Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘340’ of the last left-off proxy, ‘610’,after which the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘191’ has to be left-off, ‘+’ isindicated in the vertical lines pertaining to this 1st proxy i.e., ‘340’, being the SF(Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is indicated in the vertical line pertaining to this second2nd consecutive proxy, ‘191’ representing the proxy to be left-off.
Later, as the next four Drutas, the least Angas, are obtained by theconsecutive non-subtraction of four 1st proxies, ‘106, 60, 33 & 19’ of the lastleft-off proxy, ‘191’, ‘x’ is indicated in the vertical lines pertaining to these four1st proxies, ‘106, 60, 33 & 19’ representing the inferiors’ figures.

Now, as the next Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘10’ of the un-deducted last proxy, ‘19’,after which the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘6’ has to be left-off, ‘+’ is indicatedin the vertical lines pertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘10’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is indicated in the vertical line pertaining to this second 2nd
consecutive proxy, ‘6’ representing the proxy to be left-off.
Again, as the next two Drutas, the least Angas, are obtained by theconsecutive non-subtraction of two 1st proxies, ‘3 & 2’ of the last left-off proxy,‘6’,‘x’ is indicated in the vertical lines pertaining to these two 1st proxies, ‘3 & 2’representing the inferiors’ figures.
Now, as the last Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘1’ of the un-deducted last proxy, ‘2’, ‘+’is indicated in the vertical line pertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘1’, being the SF(Superiors’-figure).
Thus, the SF i.e., the total (3485+1950+340+10+1=) ‘5786’ of the proxiesof the vertical lines in which ‘+’ is marked should be subtracted from the respectiveSankhya ‘6236’ of which vertical line ‘: ’ is marked and the remainder (6236-5786=) ‘450’ is the ASN i.e., answer-serial-number of this Tala. They arefurnished in the right extreme as 5786/450.
Now, the process of Uddishta to find the correct serial number of the incorrectseries of Angas of this Tala furnished by the author is also furnished here.
In the process of Uddishta, as the first Pluta, the 4th consecutive Anga, isobtained by the successful consecutive subtraction of the 1st, 2nd & 4 th proxies,‘3485, 1950 & 610’, after which the fourth 6th consecutive proxy, ‘191’ has to beleft-off, ‘+’ is indicated in the vertical lines pertaining to these 1st, 2nd & 4 th
proxies, ‘3485, 1950 & 610’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is indicatedin the vertical l ine pertaining to this fourth 6h consecutive proxy, ‘191’representing the proxy to be left-off.
Later, as the next Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘106’ of the last left-off proxy, ‘191’,after which the second 2nd consecutive proxy, ‘60’ has to be left-off, ‘+’ is indicated
31
in the vertical lines pertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘106’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is indicated in the vertical line pertaining to this second 2nd
consecutive proxy, ‘60’ representing the proxy to be left-off.
Now, as the next Guru, the 3rd consecutive Anga, is obtained by the successfulconsecutive subtraction of the 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘33 & 19’ of the last left-offproxy, ‘60’, after which the third 4th consecutive proxy, ‘6’ has to be left-off,‘+’ is indicated in the vertical lines pertaining to these 1st & 2nd proxies, ‘33 &19’, being the SF (Superiors’-figure) and ‘-’ is indicated in the vertical linepertaining to this third 4th consecutive proxy, ‘6’ representing the proxy to beleft-off.
Later, as the next Laghu, the 2nd consecutive Anga, is obtained by thesuccessful subtraction of the 1st proxy, ‘3’ of the last left-off proxy, ‘6’, ‘+’ isindicated in the vertical lines pertaining to this 1st proxy, ‘3’, being the SF(Superiors’-figure).
Now, the last two Drutas, the inferior Angas, remaining in the left extreme shouldalways be presumed that they are written only to fill-in the deficit value of the prastara.
Thus, the SF i.e., the total (3485+1950+610+106+33+19+3=) ‘6206’ of theproxies of the vertical lines in which ‘+’ is marked should be subtracted from therespective Sankhya, ‘6236’ of which vertical line ‘: ’ is marked and the remainder(6236-6206=) ‘30’ is the ASN i.e., answer-serial-number of this Tala.
