Reactions 1341 - 5 Mar 2011 S Bupivacaine Temporary obturator nerve paresis following spray administration: case report A 58-year-old man underwent laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal repair for bilateral hernia. At the end of the procedure, 0.25% bupivacaine 15mL [Sensorcaine] was sprayed in the extraperitoneal space, and his incisions were infiltrated with another dose of 0.25% bupivacaine 15mL as local anaesthesia. A few hours later, he complained of difficulty getting out of bed. A neurological exam revealed weakness of right hip adduction. He was instructed to continue with bed rest until his symptoms resolved. About 6 hours later, he was able to move his right leg without difficulty, and was able to walk. He was discharged after another 36 hours and remained will at follow-up. Author comment: "[T]he spray had resulted in a temporary paresis of the right obturator nerve, which had resolved spontaneously." Mittal G, et al.
