Citalopram

Spontaneous ejaculation: case reportA 27-year-old man with panic disorder, agoraphobia and

depression was initiated on citalopram 20mg daily, along withalprazolam. Four weeks later, he reported a 2-week history ofdaily spontaneous ejaculations. These were not accompaniedby sexual arousal, erection or feelings of orgasm. Furtherexamination ruled out a urological condition.

Citalopram was discontinued, and he was started paroxetineinstead. Alprazolam was continued as before. After 3 weeks,he reported that the spontaneous ejaculations were no longeroccurring, and that his sexual life was continuing as normal.

Author comment: "Although the mechanism of thisadverse effect (the association between citalopram andspontaneous ejaculation) is not known exactly, citalopram’scentral or spinal effect on serotonin levels are thought to berelated to it."Virit O, et al.
