During a long and distinguished career he worked as the Director of the ‘Albergaria de Lisboa’ which is an Institute for the rehabilitation of mentally subnormal children. He was a resident Physician for Physical Medicine and Rehabili- tation at the New York University Medical Centre for 3 years and he was the founder and Medical Director of the first Rehabilitation Medicine Centre and School of Rehabilitation in Portugal. In addition he was the Professor of Physical Medicine at the Institute of Hydrology in Lisbon and had been President of the Portuguese Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the National Secretary for Portugal, and Council Member of Rehabilitation International, Council Member of the International Medical Society of Paraplegia, member of the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine, member of the International Committee of Human Relations in Rehabilitation, and a former member of the Education Committee of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics, and he was a member of the Education Committee of the International Federation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He extended his horizons overseas by being a cor- responding member of Medical Rehabilitation Societies in Brazil, Spain, and the German Democratic Republic. He was the President of the Iberoamerican Association for Rehabilitation of the Disabled and pre- sided over the organizing committees of the 1st Iberoamerican Congress on Rehabilitation in 1970 and of the European Conference of Rehabilitation Inter- national 1974. He had been the Medical Consultant of the Ministry of Overseas Development, and had taken a great part in planning and building many rehabilitation centres such as in Luanda, and Maputo. It will thus be seen that rehabilitation has lost one of its pioneers, and this loss will be most sadly felt in the International Rehabilitation Medicine Association itself. He was one of the Founder Councillors and had attended meetings regularly and contributed widely with his experience and wisdom.
