The University has the discretion in making revisions to the KSU Student Handbook & Planner to remain current and consistent with our current practices or changes in local, state or federal law. The 2013-2014 KSU Student Handbook & Planner was revised Summer 2013 and is the most up-to-date. Material in the KSU Student Handbook & Planner is intended to be accurate at the time of printing. However, unintentional errors may exist and policies, procedures, regulations and fees, as well as event dates, times and locations may have changed since publication.

Other important publications for approved rules and regulations include the Kennesaw State University Catalog included at kennesaw.edu/handbooks.

The KSU Student Handbook & Planner is published each academic year by the Division of Student Success. The Division of Student Success oversees all student organizations funded through Student Activities fees distributed by SABAC. The Student Activities and Budget Advisory Committee (SABAC) serves as an advisory committee to the Vice President of Student Success on allocation of student activity funds, on approval of applications to form new organizations, and on changes to the constitutions or bylaws of existing student organizations. Authority is delegated by the President of Kennesaw State University to the Vice President of Student Success, who acts on the advice of SABAC. SABAC receives budget requests from eligible organizations and holds hearings to consider whether these organizations will be given the amount requested. Hearings are held on Wednesday afternoon during Fall and Spring semesters and are open to the public. SABAC’s membership includes representatives of the administration, staff, faculty and students. Student members are appointed by the Student Government president. SABAC is chaired by a student member elected by the committee. It is produced by KSU Student Media (KSUSM) as part of the Department of Student Life. Approximately 10,000 copies are printed and available to students free of charge while supplies last. Portions of this book are also online at ksustudent.com.

Kennesaw State was originally established by the University System of Georgia in 1963 as Kennesaw Junior College serving 1,000 students. The college became a four-year institution in 1976 and was named Kennesaw College in 1977. In 1988, it was named Kennesaw State College and in 1996 became Kennesaw State University. Currently, Kennesaw State University is the third-largest university in Georgia with more than 24,600 undergraduate and graduate students representing 132 countries.

Admission to Kennesaw State University is decentralized among three offices; Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions and Global Admissions.

The Office of University Admissions is the primary initial enrollment office with responsibility for student marketing, recruitment, academic admission screening and readmission of former students at the undergraduate level. This office serves as the official contact to the Board of Regents for all admission operations regarding SIS admission compliance, reports, regulations and operations. The Office of Graduate Admissions is responsible for the initial enrollment process and recruitment at the graduate level. The Office of Global Admissions is the contact for admission processes and recruitment specific to international students and provides the following free services:

• Issuance of I20 certificates• Verification of F1 student visa status• Reinstatement of F1 visa status thru USCIS• Change of status from f2s, H1b, Ls, Es to F1 status

Please note: there are no visa lawyer services at KSU.

Applicants admitted to KSU are not guaranteed admission to their major of choice. Many programs have internal admission processes and standards. Admission to KSU is ALWAYS required prior to admission to a specific “gated” program. Applicants to KSU apply online at either the undergraduate or graduate level. The enrollment services webpage, linked from the KSU homepage, is the hub for prospective and enrolled students to access student services offices in a virtual one-stop-shop. Included as well is an enrollment services calendar showing important dates and deadlines. Prospective students are directed from the enrollment services webpage to the appropriate admissions site to request materials, find out about information


sessions and tours, research deadlines and admission requirements, apply online, check the status of their application, conduct admission business through transactional web tools and access additional information. The Card Services Center works closely with the Department of Parking & Transportation and other departments to “make you official.” First-time services to students and employees are often free (e.g. IDs and parking permits). Replacement services are usually subject to fees. Card Services is responsible for:

Issuing KSU Student ID Cards All enrolled students at Kennesaw State University are required to carry an official KSU Identification Card. The KSU ID card is honored across campus for photo identification, in security applications, for access to events, activities and resources and for selected retail services. All students must present their KSU ID Card to University officials upon request.

Issuing Student Parking PermitsAll vehicles on campus must display a valid KSU parking permit. Vehicles without a valid permit will be ticketed and/or booted. Most commuter parking areas require a hang-tag to open the gates. New permits are issued annually to residential students; all others are valid for the duration of your enrollment. It is the responsibility of all KSU students to review and abide by the Parking Policies and Procedures: kennesaw.edu/parking.

Managing the KSU Higher One Debit Card ProgramThe KSU Debit Card program gives students the option to receive funds electronically either through direct deposit to a checking/debit account with our distribution bank or by ACH to a third-party bank. Students are not required to open an account with the partner bank but must use the card provided to set up their refund choice online.

Copy/Print Services for StudentsCopy/Print Services provides students with copying and printing resources across campus. There are currently 200+ Multi-Function Devices (MFDs) campus-wide that provide color and black and white copying and printing. Using an MFD requires a valid KSU ID card or guest card. Coin operated copiers are also available in select locations. Copy/Print Services also offers a wireless web-based printing option on campus called PrintWise found at printwise.kennesaw.edu.

KSU Culinary Services serves the campus community with fast, friendly service and value options to make eating on campus palate-pleasing, healthy and convenient. The Commons, KSU’s all-you-care-to-eat dining hall, is next to the Burruss Building just north of the Campus Green. The Commons is the main dining hall for meal plan participants, and is also open to the public. Non-students may either purchase a one-time entry to The Commons or a full meal plan. Other dining options around campus include Einstein Bros. Bagels, Chick-fil-A Express, PJ’s Coffee Café, and Delancey Deli, Jazzman’s Café, and The Hoot. Students may use meal plan swipes in The Commons and at The Hoot.

All dining venues, including The Commons, accept “K-Cash” flex dollars, from either of two accounts: General Declining Balance or Food Restricted. The Department of Parking & Transportation (DPT) is responsible for the policies and daily operations of KSU’s Big Owl Bus (B.O.B.) shuttle service, more than 12,000 parking spaces as well as the maintenance of all parking decks, lots, and University roads. The DPT works closely with Card Services in issuing parking permits. KSU’s shuttle service provides:

• Service between campus and various local area apartments• Service to Town Center at Cobb Mall• Safe and secure lighted shuttle stops

The shuttle is free to ride for all KSU students with a valid KSU ID. Only individuals who have a legitimate connection to KSU and possess a valid KSU ID or shuttle pass may ride the shuttle. B.O.B. runs Monday thru Thursday 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM and Friday 7:00 AM - 6:30 PM* with stops on campus at the South end of the Carmichael Student Center, the North end of the Carmichael Student Center, and Chastain Pointe. Off-campus stops are at U Club on Frey, U Pointe Kennesaw, The Collegiate, West 22, KSU Sports & Recreation Park, KSU Center as well as Town Center Mall, Town Point park and ride lots.

The Center for Health Promotion and Wellness (a.k.a. the Wellness Center) encourages students to assume more responsibility for their health and well-being through awareness and education. The primary goal is to enhance and provide a balance in the intellectual, emotional, physical, social, environmental, and spiritual development of the whole person. The Center strives to provide an environment that is supportive of positive health practices. Programming focuses on helping students reduce lifestyle risk factors. The Center also serves as a learning center for future exercise and health science students. It promotes wellness through a variety of avenues including:

Wellness EventsLearn-over-lunches, health fair, guest speakers, health screenings, CPR/First Aid/AED classes, fun walks, body image awareness week, and National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.• Fitness Assessments. The Center offers a MicroFit, a computerized fitness evaluation for blood pressure, cardiovascular endurance, body composition, muscular strength, and flexibility. The computerized testing allows for pre- and post-test comparisons. Appointments are required.

Nutrition Services The Center employs a full-time registered and licensed dietitian who is available


to students for one-on-one nutrition counseling (by appointment) on a variety of needs, including weight loss/management/gain, eating disorders/disordered eating, food allergies, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sports nutrition etc. The dietitian also coordinates nutrition education events around campus and is available for guest lectures and student organizations.

Peer Health Education Program Students who have an interest in health promotion, and who want to get involved on campus, can apply to become a peer health educator. Students can become nationally certified through a national peer educator network and have the opportunity to educate their peers on a variety of college health issues.

Educational MaterialsThe Wellness Center contains DVDs, books, magazines, and other publications on health and wellness topics. In addition, there are software programs where one can analyze ones diet and get healthy cooking tips and recipes.

FEESDiploma Fee: A diploma fee of $30 (for undergraduates) and $35 (for graduates) is required of all degree candidates and is payable at the time a petition to graduate is presented to the registrar. The fee is nontransferable and nonrefundable. It entitles the student to one diploma.

Diploma Replacement Fee: When a request is received to reorder a diploma (lost in fire, move, etc.), a fee of $30 will be assessed.

Fax Fee: Priority fee for electronic transmission (fax) of unofficial transcripts or certifications forms/letters of $10 per document.

Late Payment Fee: A $50 late payment fee will be assessed for tuition and fee payments received after the end of late registration and drop/add. This fee may apply at other times as well. For specifics, contact the Bursar’s Office.

Late Registration Fee: Students requesting a late registration or drop/add after all official registration periods have ended will pay a late hand-registration fee of $30 per transaction.

On-campus Living – Learning communitiesThere are multiple on-campus communities that offer unique features to meet the needs of specific student populations. First-time new traditional freshmen may live in the University Village Suites and designated buildings at University Village and KSU Place. Upper-class students live in University Place and designated buildings at KSU Place. With an expansion of University Place in Fall 2012, there are now 3500 students living in campus housing. There are also a variety of special interest housing options such as Honors, Global Learning/International, Veterans, and Music and Entertainment.

Kennesaw State University, in cooperation with the KSU Foundation, began offering on-campus housing in the fall of 2002. On campus housing is coordinated through a collaborative effort between KSUF Housing Management LLC (a subsidiary of the KSU Foundation) and the KSU Department of Residence Life. Leasing, contracts,


and finances for certain communities (KSU Place, University Place Phase I, University Village, and University Village Suites) are managed directly by KSUF Housing Management LLC–while others (University Place Phase II) are managed by Residence Life. All maintenance and housekeeping services are handled by KSUF Housing Management LLC. All programming, residential student conduct, roommate relations, resident development and support, and the Resident Assistants are handled by the Department of Residence Life.

The Student Recreation & Wellness center is next to the Campus Green and offers students fitness programs including group exercise classes, personal training, special events, and fitness workshops. The Recreation Facility offers great views of the Campus Green, Fitness Equipment that is easy and enjoyable to use, a gymnasium where students will find a friendly pick-up game and an XP Power Performance room. The Student Recreation & Wellness Center also offers customized fitness programs with personal trainers.

Over seventy group exercise classes, offered weekly, include Yoga, Kickboxing, Hip Hop Aerobics, and Indoor Cycling.

The Department of Sports and Recreation offers special events and fitness workshops. Students may race in annual events like the Turkey Trot and Daffodil Dash or show what they’re made of in the Iron Owl Weight Lifting Competition. The Department also hosts several different fitness workshops each semester like Indoor Cycling Essentials, TRX Suspension Training, Zumba® and YogaFit Instructor Trainings.

Nature Bound is an outdoor recreation program that is a collaboration between the Department of Sports & Recreation and the Center for Student Leadership. The organization offers both recreational and educational opportunities for everyone – novice to expert. Nature Bound is founded on the principles of experiential learning to develop knowledge, leadership, and community. Nature Bound offers an array of trips including hang gliding, backpacking, mountain biking, white water rafting, skydiving, hiking, caving, and rock climbing. Students may become a member of Nature Bound for $25 per semester or $50 for a year to receive 20% discount on trips, discounts on outdoor rental, priority registration and a t-shirt. Equipment checkout offers recreational equipment for students with a valid KSU ID to checkout for personal use such as tennis rackets, footballs, basketballs, Frisbees, and softball equipment. Recreational equipment may be checked out for three days. Equipment turned in late is subject to a $2.00 per day per item late fee. Outdoor Equipment is also available for weekly rentals such as tents, sleeping bags, ground pads, and hammocks. Students can also sign up for Nature Bound trips, buy guest passes and forgotten id passes at the Equipment Checkout Desk. A valid KSU ID is required to checkout items. The Equipment Checkout Desk is inside the Student Recreation & Wellness Center.

The KSU Bike Shop gives students the opportunity to get their bikes tuned up and worked on through the use of their student fees. Labor is included, but any parts needed will have to be brought in by the patron. All bike service is completed the same day and bikes need to be picked up the same day to avoid late fees. The Bike Shop also offers three-day mountain bike rentals, with a $200 cash or check deposit. There is a $25.00 late fee per day with mountain bike rentals. A valid KSU ID is required to checkout items. The KSU Bike Shop is inside the Student Recreation & Wellness Center.

club Sports are housed in the Department of Sports & Recreation and provide an opportunity for students to compete in a sport they love, stay fit, get involved at KSU, and build lifelong friendships. Currently twenty-eight clubs compete against other local and regional teams that include UGA, GT, Emory, Duke, Alabama, and UT. Club Sports are student-initiated and managed, allowing opportunities for leadership, team building, public speaking, decision-making, organization, budgeting, creativity, and camaraderie. Students who aren’t interested in playing a sport can still get involved by volunteering as a stat keeper, travel manager, or marketing manager. Participants in the Club Sports program must be actively enrolled, fee paying KSU students in a degree seeking program with a minimum 2.0 KSU AGPA. intramural Sports provides the opportunity to compete with other Kennesaw State students in a fun, friendly environment. Leagues are available for Men’s, Women’s, and CoRec teams. Individual sports and special events are also offered. All skill levels are welcome. Fall sports include flag football, dodge ball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and golf. Spring sports include basketball, softball, bowling, and recreational soccer.

The library, named after the university’s first president Horace W. Sturgis, is designed to support and advance the teaching and learning activities of the greater university community.For checkout of materials, the KSU ID card serves as a library card. The library provides access to computers located in the Information Commons on the first floor of the library. Laptops may be checked out for library use only. Both individual and group study spaces are available. OWLSpace, the Study Commons, is located on the ground floor of the library and provides group and individual seating, study and presentation rooms, wireless service and vending machines.

The University operates a full-service police department employing seventy-two personnel, thirty-nine of whom are sworn/certified police officers (including one K-9 officer), to promote safety and security on campus. Prospective police recruits must pass a nationally-validated entry-level police exam, undergo an extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, medical evaluation, and successfully complete ten weeks of Police Academy in order to ensure the highest level of service to the KSU community. All KSU officers have the power of arrest and the authority to enforce all state laws. Their criminal jurisdiction includes the entire campus and extends 500 yards outside any KSU property controlled by the state Board of Regents (traffic jurisdiction is statewide). If an offense occurs within the officers’ jurisdiction, they can leave this area to pursue the offender.

Call 770-423-6666 (ext. 6666 from any campus phone) twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, to reach a trained operator who will dispatch appropriate resources. A strong, cooperative partnership exists between the KSU Police and Cobb County 911. All 911 calls originating from KSU are immediately transferred to the KSU Police Communications Center.

There are three Community Policing offices: 1) the North Precinct is at University Village, adjacent to the North Parking Deck, 2) the East precinct is at the KSU Soccer Stadium and 3) the main precinct is in Public Safety (Building 20).

The Department of Public Safety exists to ensure that KSU is a safe and secure community, conducive to the free exchange of ideas within an academic setting.

Bicycle Anti-Theft ProgramKSU Police offers a bicycle registration program, BAT, similar to tag/license plate vehicle registration. It is free and voluntary. Students that own bicycles are encouraged to register with the KSU Police. Registering a bike will allow confirmation of the owner and possibly help with recovery. BAT registration forms are available at all three police offices.

KSU operates three health clinics on campus supported completely by student fees. The Village Clinic is in the University Village and sees patients for same day sick visits only. The House 52 Clinic is on Campus Loop Road and sees patients for specialty appointments, follow up appointments, scheduled gynecologic exams, travel health and immunizations. Psychiatric and Social Services are in House 53 on Campus Loop Road.

Patient visits are at no cost. Charges may be incurred for laboratory tests or medications.

RegistrationAll registration at KSU is conducted over the web through Owl Express. There are two phases of registration at KSU: Early Registration and Final Registration. The Early Registration phase is available to students who are currently enrolled and in good standing. These students are strongly encouraged to register within the Early Registration phase. The Final Registration phase is available to new, readmitted,


and all currently enrolled students. New students are invited to attend an orientation session where they will have an opportunity to register for classes. A Drop/Add Session is offered to students during the first week of classes. After each registration phase, fees must be paid to avoid cancellation of classes.

GraduationUndergraduate students should submit a formal petition for the degree through the online petition process. Login to Owl Express; select Registration and Student Records tab; select Petition to Graduate. Once submitted, the graduation petition process will initiate a petition fee assessment and a final audit of your academic record to determine eligibility toward the degree. Expect four to six weeks for a completed degree audit. Graduate students should see their Program Director for the petition to graduate. After the petition to graduate is received by the Office of Registrar, a graduation fee is assessed and a degree audit is completed in four to six weeks, which will be mailed.

DegreeWorksDegreeWorks is a web-based tool that provides real-time advice on degree progression. This system is designed to aid and facilitate academic advising, but is not intended to replace face-to-face advising sessions. DegreeWorks is available to undergraduate students who entered KSU in Fall 2008 or who have a catalog year equal to Fall 2008 or later. Students can access DegreeWorks through Owl Express. Students who entered prior to Fall 2008 should continue to meet with their academic advisor concerning degree progression.

TranscriptsKSU transcripts are issued to students upon request through Owl Express. Transcripts requested through Owl Express will be mailed or picked up the next business day. Effective Fall 2012, students may request transcripts to be mailed or delivered electronically.

University System of Georgia Regents’ RequirementBoard of Regents of the University System of Georgia policy requires the basic competence of academic literacy; that is, certain minimum skills of reading and writing.

Students may satisfy the Georgia Regents’ requirement by earning a grade of C or higher in ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102 (or transfer equivalent). Students who have taken either ENGL 1101 or ENGL 1102 and not earned a grade of C or higher must also enroll in the writing tutorial workshops when they re-enroll in the composition courses.

WithdrawalsTo completely or partially withdraw from classes at KSU, a student must withdraw online through Owl Express, Registration and Student Records. The date the withdrawal is submitted online will be considered the official KSU withdrawal date and will be used to calculate any tuition refund or refund to Federal student aid and/or HOPE scholarship programs. It is advisable to print the final page of the withdrawal for your records. Withdrawals submitted online prior to midnight on the last day


to withdraw without academic penalty will receive a “W” grade; withdrawals after midnight or exceeding withdrawal limits will receive a “WF” grade. Failure to complete the online withdrawal process will result in no withdrawal from classes.

Students withdrawing from classes before the end of late registration and drop/add are entitled to a 100% refund. After that date, students will be granted a percentage refund of tuition and fees only if they withdraw completely from the university. Lab, specialized course/major, and insurance fees are not refundable if withdrawal from course(s) is made after the end of late registration and drop/add.

Veterans’ BenefitsThe university is on the approved list of the Georgia State Approving Agency for the training of veterans, disabled veterans as well as the children and widows of deceased veterans who are eligible for benefits under the G.I. Bill.

Students in training under the G.I. Bill are required to pay all fees as regular students, since they are paid benefits directly through the Veterans Administration. KSU and the VA do not have an agreement to process tuition/fee waivers; failure of the VA to pay students in a timely manner does not eliminate or delay a student’s financial responsibility to Kennesaw State University.

Students may withdraw from courses any time before the last three weeks of the semester. Summer withdrawal dates vary. As of fall 2004, students will be allowed a maximum of eight total withdrawals if they entered KSU as a freshman.
