Insecticides in (r"its and
*egeta$les+ Problem we are facing in today is the
chemicals used in our food. Insecticides
& pesticides are used to protect the crop
from pest for example:! " #$%. !hese
are poisonous chemicals . most of themare nonbiodegradable and remain
penetrated in plant fruits &'egetables.
On eating fruits & 'egetables it get
accumulated in the body of human
causing serious health problems.

!o study the presence of insecticides
or pesticides in fruits and 'egetables.
)aterials re*uired : )ortar and pestle "bea+ers" funnel " glass rod " ,lter paper
china dish " water bath" tripod stand" fusion
tube" +nife" test tube. Samples of 'arious
fruits and 'egetables" alcohol" sodium
metal" ferric chloride" ferrous sulphatecrystals" distilled water and dil.
Sulphuric acid.
Procedure: !a+e di-erent types of fruits
and 'egetables and cut them into small
pieces separately. !ransfer the cut pieces of'arious fruits and 'egetables into it
separately and crush them. !a+e di-erent
+inds for each +ind of fruits and 'egetables
and place the crushed fruits and 'egetables
in these bea+ers and add // ml of alcohol
to each of these. Stir well and ,lter. %ollectthe ,ltrate in separate china dishes"
0'aporate the alcohol by heating the china
dishes one by one o'er a water bath and let
the residue dry in the o'en. $eat a small
piece of sodium in a fusion tube" till it melts.
!hen add one of the abo'e residues from

the china dish to this fusion tube and heat it
till red hot. rop the hot fusion tube in a
china dish containing about / ml of distilled
water. #rea+ the tube and boil the contents
of the china dish for about 5 minutes. %ool
and ,lter the solution. %ollect the ,ltrate. !o
the ,ltrate add ml of freshly prepared
ferrous sulphate solution and warm the
contents. !hen add 12 drops of ferricchloride solution and acidify with dilute $%l.
If a blue or green ppt. or colouration is
obtained it indicates the presence of
nitrogen containing insecticides. 3epeat the
test of nitrogen for residues obtained from
other fruits and 'egetables and record the
obser'ation.
