Before we go to these mantras, we must clearly understand why Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] \ Wìv]rõ

˜rD]n]\, some physical act of worship of p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]r is necessary for one's spiritual progress. The overriding purpose of human life is to gain mçÜ] mçÜ], which means recognizing p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r already in oneself as ONESELF Itself. That means gaining jÆv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jÆv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ - gaining identity of oneself with p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]r õ Itself, already in oneself. Gaining such identity is mçÜ] mçÜ], is #Ån] ’ýl]\ #Ån] ’ýl]\ - the result of b—ýÀ õ#Ån]\ b—ýÀõ

#Ån]\, Wìv]rõ #Ån]\ Wìv]rõ #Ån]\ - ˜tm]#Ån]\ ˜tm] #Ån]\ - Self knowledge, gained through the words of the Upanishads. The greatest obstacle to gaining jÆv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jÆv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ is one's ah\ärõ aha\är - ego I, the ah\är aha\är notion that "I am the doer and enjoyer of my äým]*s äýrm]s, and äým]*’ýl]s äýrm] *’ýl]s. " Such õah\är aha\är - ego "I" is false "I". It has no real existence. It is rooted in self-ignorance and the resulting impurities accumulated in one's ant]” äýrõN] ant]h äýrõN], mind and b¶i£õ b¶i£w in one's past and present lives. That ego I, that false I has to go, has to disappear, naturally and completely, for one to be able to gain ant]” äýrõN] x¶i£õ ant]h

äýrõN] x¶i£w - purity of mind and b¶i£ õb¶i£w, and s]\y]äƒ ˜tm] dõx]*n]\ s]\y]äƒ

˜tm] dõx]*n]\ - clarity of vision of the true nature of oneself as p]rõmàìv]r

p]rõmàìv]r Itself. The disappearance of ego "I" - false "I" from one's ant]” äýrõN] ant]h äýrõN] is possible only through p½N]* Wìv]rõ x]rõNÅg]it] p½rN]* Wìv]rõ x]rõNÅg]itw - the disposition of total surrender to p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r, already in oneself. Cultivation of such mental disposition is possible only if one discovers oneself to be an Wìv]rõ B]• Wìv]rõ B]•a - an ardent devotee of p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]r, which means an ardent devotee of b—ýÀõiv]§ b—ýÀõi vw§ - b—ýÀõ#Ån]\ b—ýÀõ #Ån]\. To discover and develop an abiding love and devotion to p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r, love and devotion to b—ýÀõ#Ån]\ b—ýÀõ #Ån]\ requires some act of love and devotion involving one's [pÅiD] [pÅiDw - the body vehicle one is blessed with. It is only such act of love and devotion that converts a person into a devotee of p]rõmàìv]r

p]rõmàìv]r - a devotee of b—ýÀõ#Ån]\ b—ýÀõ #Ån]\.

Such act of love and devotion to p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r, love and devotion to b—ýÀõ#Ån]\ b—ýÀõ #Ån]\ is Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n]\ Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n]\ - some physical act of worship of p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]rõ. That is why Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n]\

is absolutely necessary for one's spiritual progress, leading ultimately to mçÜ] mçÜ]

- j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\. Now what kind of Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ

˜rD]n] one must do for gaining j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\? Sri Krishna says y]tò/ äýroiS] y]tò/ äýroiSw, t]tò/ ä÷ÎSv] m]dõp]*N]mò/ t]tò/ ä÷ÎSv] m]dõrp]*N]mò/ (G9 - 27) Whatever äým]* äýrm]* you do, in your everyday life, do all that äým]* äýrm],* without any exception, as Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] äým]* Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] äýrm]* as worship of p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]r. The äým]* äýrm]* you do, just as you do, is itself worship of p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]r. There is no other ritual called for in this worship. Now we return to the Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] mantras which we heard at the beginning. Following H mantra japa, recognition of p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r in H mantra, Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] - worship of p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r takes the form of a hom] hom] - a Vedic Havan ritual, involving fire in a sanctified Havan kund, and oblations to fire as aig¦] dev]tÅ aig¦w dev]tÅ, representing p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r already recognized in the Alter of worship. This Havan äým]* äýrm]* called ˜v]hõint] hom] ˜v]hõintw hom], meaning a prayer for ÛI ÛI - wealth of all kinds, is being done at the g¶Îä÷l] g¶Îä÷l - the teacher-student institution, for the benefit of everyone involved in the objective and progress of the institution as a whole. Usually, the teacher does the hõv]nò/ äým]* hõv]nò/ äýrm]*, and both the teacher and the students together chant the mantras and offer the oblations, praying for all their material needs to sustain themselves in their continued commitment to the pursuit of b—ýÀõ#]]n]\ b—ýÀõ #]]n]\. The Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Havan - hõv]nò/ äým]* hõv]nò/ äýrm]* begins with these mantras: ˜v]hõntÆ iv]t]nvÅnÅ | ä÷vÅ*NÅ cÆrõmÅtm]n]” | ˜v]hõntÆ ivwt]nvÅnÅ | ä÷rvÅ*NÅ cÆrõmÅtm]n]h |

vÅsÅ>isw m]m] gÅv]‘õ | aÌ]pÅnà c] s]rv]*d |

t]tç mà iÛõy]mÅv]h | lçm]x]]\ p]x¶iB]” s]hõ svÅh | t]tç mà iÛwy]mÅv]h | lçm]x]]\ p]x¶iBwh s]hõ svÅh |

Every mantra in the Havan - hõv]nò/ äým]* hõv]nò/ äýrm]*, ends with the utterance of the word svÅh svÅh. It is with the utterance of the svÅh svÅh mantra one performs the ˜huit] ˜huitw - one does the oblation of the offering into the fire in the Havan kund. What happens to the offering then? It becomes ONE with the fire, just as on joining the ocean, the river becomes one with the ocean. In one's spiritual endeavor to uplift oneself by cultivating the necessary mental disposition, this symbolic act of ˜huit] ˜huitw - oblation into fire - aig¦] dev]tÅ aig¦w dev]tÅ, is one of extraordinary significance, which one must learn to remember every time one performs an ˜huit] ˜huitw. The significance is this: The material used for oblation represents the jÆv] jÆv] - the individual who performs the ˜huit] ˜huitw. The fire - the Agni Devata into which the ˜huit] ˜huitw is made is p—ýty]Ü] b—ýÀõnò/ p—ýty]Ü] b—ýÀõnò/ - the visible manifestation of the Invisible b—ýÀõnò/ b—ýÀõnò/. The material used for oblation, becoming ONE with the fire represents j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jÆv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ - the upliftment of j]Iv] jÆv] to reach the state of total identity with b—ýÀõnò/ b—ýÀõnò/, which is indeed the overriding purpose of life. Any prayer which precedes the oblation is also only for the purpose of uplifting oneself to reach that state of identity with b—ýÀõnò/ b—ýÀõnò/, namely j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv]

b—ýÀõ °ky]\. But such j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ is possible only if j]Iv] jIv] is free from ahõ\ärõ ahõ\ärõ - ego "I". That is why the ˜huit] ˜huitw is made with the utterance of the svÅh svÅh mantra. sv] sv] means "one's own". The word sv] sv] indicates the "my" notion, or the ego power governing all of one's thought, word and deed. sv] hn]\ sv] hn]\ is svÅh svÅh - the ego power has been destroyed by Wìv]rõ Wìv]rõ power, by the grace of p]rõmàìv]r p]rõmàìv]rõ, which means I am released from ahõ\är ahõ\ärõ, I am free, the j]Iv] jIv] is free, the material used for oblation representing the j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ is also free, and hence it is naturally fit for j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\.

Thus by the utterance of the svÅh svÅh mantra, with proper attitude, one consciously uplifts oneself from the ego power, by the grace of p]rõmàìv]r

p]rõmàìv]r, and projects one's mind and b¶i£õ b¶i£w towards the overriding purpose of life, namely gaining identity with b—ýÀõnò/ b—ýÀõnò/. Any prayer preceding the svÅh svÅh mantra is not for any trivial pleasure, but it is only for serving as an aid in one's endeavor to uplift oneself to reach that state of identity with b—ýÀõnò/ b—ýÀõnò/. That is the meaning of the svÅh svÅh mantra. By repeating the svÅh svÅh mantra again and again, after each prayer, as the ˜huit] ahuitw mantra, as the mantra for oblation unto Agni Devata, especially by uttering the svÅh svÅh mantra in the prescribed sv]r sv]ra - accent, namely svÅh svÅh, one affirms one's deliberate commitment to b—ýÀõ#Ån]\ b—ýÀõ #Ån]\ or j]Iv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ jIv] b—ýÀõ °ky]\ as one's overriding goal of life, through Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] b¶i£ Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] b¶i£w, with the b¶i£õ b¶i£w set in the disposition of Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] - worship of p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]r. Thus the svÅh svÅh mantra is also a prayer for freedom from ego "I". Returning to the Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] Wìv]rõ ˜rD]n] mantras again: ˜v]hõntÆ iv]t]nvÅnÅ | ä÷vÅ*NÅ cÆrõmÅtm]n]” | ˜v]hõntÆ ivwt]nvÅnÅ | ä÷rvÅ*NÅ cÆrõmÅtm]n” |

As such, the > ärõ o> är is applicable to every kind of wealth being sought in this prayer - worship of p]rõmàìv]rõ p]rõmàìv]rõ. Further, may my wealth also include gÅv]” c]õ gÅv” c] - cows which are capable of giving aÌ]pÅnà c] s]v]*d] aÌ]pÅnà c] s]rv]*d] - food, drink, etc at all times. s]v]*d s]rv]*d] means plenty of. The g¶Îä÷l] g¶Îä÷l - the teacher-student institution is somewhere in the cold regions of the Himalayas, and hence the people involved need woolen clothing to keep themselves warm. Therefore they are praying for wool-yielding animals. Thus the first prayer is "After blessing me with màDÅ màDÅ - intelligence and fitness for wealth, please give me every kind of wealth conducive to gaining spiritual knowledge, make all such wealth long-lasting and ever-increasing, may such wealth include also clothing for the entire family, cows capable of yielding plenty of food and drink at all times, and wool-yielding animals. svÅh svÅh - May I ever remain free from ego.
