Citalopram

Mania: case reportA 13-year-old boy with epilepsy experienced manic

episodes during treatment with citalopram for suspectedpseudoseizures.

The boy, who had previously been treated with valproic acidand carbamazepine, started treatment with citalopram20 mg/day [duration of treatment not stated] andoxcarbazepine. His seizures gradually decreased, but hedeveloped unusual behaviours including excessive speech, reckless spending, wandering and middle insomnia; hisYoung’s mania rating scale score was 13.

A diagnosis of epilepsy and citalopram-induced mania wasmade; citalopram was discontinued and treatment witholanzapine was started. At follow-up 1 month later the boy didnot exhibit any manic symptoms.

Author comment: "Citalopram seems to be the mostlikely reason for the manic episode given that the patient hadno bipolar diathesis as evidenced by either personal or familyhistory of an affective illness."Ameen S, et al.
