Reactions 1384 - 14 Jan 2012 Ergocalciferol Exacerbation of hypercalcaemia and hypercalciuria: case report A 64-year-old man experienced exacerbation of hypercalcaemia and hypercalciuria following treatment with ergocalciferol for vitamin D insufficiency [duration of treatment prior to reaction onset not stated]. The man, who had primary hyperparathyroidism and osteoporosis, received weekly ergocalciferol 50 000 IU for 8 weeks [route not stated]; successive treatment with colecalciferol was later initiated for 3 weeks. Approximately 3 months later, his serum calcium levels increased from 11.4 mg/dL to 12.1 mg/dL with an elevated urinary calcium value of 535 mg/day, from 340 mg/day. A decreased albumin level of 4.1 mg/dL, from 4.3 mg/dL, was also noted. All vitamin D sources were withdrawn. The man’s serum calcium and urinary calcium values later dropped to 10.8 mg/dL and 311 mg/day, respectively; his albumin level returned to 4.3 mg/dL. Exacerbation of hypercalcaemia andhypercalciuria: case report
