First report of urticaria: case reportA 35-year-old woman developed urticaria and pruritus on
her face, neck and legs 15 minutes after receiving mepivacaine[dosage not stated] during removal of a naevus. Urticariaresolved within 1 hour after treatment with an oralantihistamine. One year later, prick and intradermal tests werenegative to 1% mepivacaine, but a subcutaneous challengewith mepivacaine 0.3mL resulted in a 23 × 10mm wheal after15 minutes. Subsequent intradermal tests were positive tomepivacaine and ropivacaine, but subcutaneous challengeswith lidocaine and bupivacaine were negative.Prieto A, et al. » Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase and Medline didnot reveal any previous case reports of urticaria associated withmepivacaine. The WHO Adverse Drug Reactions databasecontained 61 reports of urticaria associated with mepivacaine.
