Probenecid Immune haemolytic anaemia
A depressed haemoglobin concentration (4 .2 g/dl) and haematocrit (13%) and an elevated bilirubin concentration (2.8 mg/dl) and reticulocyte count (5.4%) were measured in a 64-year-old man who was being treated with probenecid 500mg bid and colchicine O.6mg as required. A bone marrow biopsy indicated haemolytic anaemia and secondary folale deficiency. Serological tests showed Ihe patient had probenecid antibodies . The patient was treated with a transfusion of red blood cells (1 unit) and prednisone, folale, iron and allopurinol (which replaced probenecid). The patient was discharged on hospital day 18. The authors believed that the patient's ' . . . hemolytic anemia was induced by probenecid through an immune mechanism, probably an immune complex mechanism'_ Sasler. S.D.: Behzad. 0..
