Angioneurotic oedema and bronchospasm in anelderly patient: case report

A 67-year-old man with arterial hypertension developedangioneurotic oedema and bronchospasm 1 hour after hissecond dose of quinapril 10mg.

The patient presented with oedema of the tongue and uvulaand dyspnoea. His symptoms resolved after he was givenantihistamines and corticosteroids. Results of spirometric testsconducted 1 week later, showed his maximal expiratory flowvalues were at the lower limit of the normal range. The patientalso had a moderately positive methacholine test.

Author comment: The presence of unspecified bronchialhyper-reactivity, with spirometric results in the lower limit ofnormality and a moderatively positive methacholine test, couldindicate that the patient was predisposed to bronchospasm.Cosano L, et al.
