The man, who also had post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder, was referred to a mental health clinic for management of his psychiatric symptoms. He reported that for the past few months he had been experiencing compulsive behaviour, including intense sexual desires toward other women and gambling on scratchcards. This was unusual as he had a loving, supportive wife and had never gambled before. He also noted an increased appetite with a weight gain of 9.1kg. He confirmed that he had compulsive eating behaviours, and drank about a 20-pack of beer each day. His Parkinson’s disease medications included oral ropinirole 3mg three times daily. He stated that his neurologist had increased his ropinirole dosage at the last visit from 1mg twice daily to 3mg twice daily due to worsening Parkinson’s symptoms. His medical records confirmed that the weight gain and impulsive behaviour had begun within the first few weeks after the ropinirole dose was increased. The man’s ropinirole was withdrawn, and his symptoms totally resolved. He started to lose weight and did not have the urge to gamble. The man’s Parkinson’s motor symptoms re-emerged and he was restarted on ropinirole which was well tolerated without recurrence of his compulsive symptoms. Author comment: "The appearance of symptoms on increasing the dose and then improvement with reducing the dose suggests a strong correlation between ropinirole and impulsive behavior".
