This week the entire world eyed on the announcement of Nobel Peace Prize Award. It went to Liu Xiaobo who was imprisoned in China for his ‘Charter 08’ Democracy Campaign. Primarily China should be proud of such a notable and honourable award be granted to a Chinese. However, since Liu Xiaobo has been charged as being a dissident and as now be highly commended for his peaceful approach in pursuing freedom, democracy and human right in his own country, China might get offended by this approval from the West seemingly as a means to protest against an uprising China.

The Nobel Peace Prize Award Panel was appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, yet it is an independent body free from any political interference. Occasionally the public could have questioned about the award going to the most appropriate prize winner, by and large the winners certainly have been acting in line with the western values of democracy, freedom and human right. So this award has high regard in reflecting and promoting peace among nations and people over the world. The outcome of this year’s award inevitably has shocked China as it prompts the need for a re-consideration of the government’s line in handling issues of democracy, freedom and human right in respect of the world’s benchmark, amid of China’s growing economical and political powers.

Although in China the award to Liu Xiaobo could not freely go into the publicity and given that the new generation might not fully understand how he could become the winner, I still believe that the award could signify a worldview expectation to China and thus challenge her to set people free from her own enclosure. This is indeed an objective of the Nobel Peace Prize.
