In this issue we have a special article reporting on the joint donation of an ambulance to the St John Victoria by Mr Johnathan Huang, President of World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce (WTCC) and the Melbourne Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce (MTCC). This is a very praise-worthy charity event. According to Mr Stephen Horton, CEO of the St John Ambulance Victoria, many ambulances of their 142-vehicle fleet are quite worn out and need to be replaced. Support of this kind from the Chinese community is particularly touching and encouraging to him and his staff as when they realise that ethnic minority groups do care about their work.

The St John Ambulance, being a non-profit making body served by many volunteers, has a history of over 125 years in Australia. They mainly provide first-aid training, first-aid kit facilities, on the spot first-aid services in community events and in disastrous circumstances, as well as community care services for the sick and elderly. In Western Australia and the Northern Territory they are also responsible for ambulance services. Many would have thought that St John would be government funded but actually in Victoria and NSW their operating costs are only met by service charge and public donation. A donation from Chinese community this round is a breakthrough for them.

I think the first aid training courses offered by them is very important; such that any trained people on the street can offer emergency assistance to people injured on accident. Notably these courses are being held in English and understandably not many Chinese would take part.

In the eventuality that some grave accidents occurred in a Chinese residential area, a working place of a community function, naturally people in need of help are Chinese and people around are also Chinese. As there are few Chinese who have undergone first aid training, very often they have to wait for foreign assistance to come; let alone the language barrier in seeking assistance, timely medical treatment could be jeopardised. So I would suggest some St John first aid training courses be organised in different ethnic minority languages. Obviously we Chinese in greater number and with many non-English speaking elderly would be in great demand of such training.

We should be proud of the generosity of Mr Johnathan Huang and the MTCC as an proven act for us to embrace community needs outside our Chinese circle. I also hope for the future launching of first aid courses in Chinese so that more of us can help ourselves and to help others.
