Last week the Chief Executive of HKSAR, Mr. Donald Tsang, visited Australia in the capital cities of Melbourne first, then Perth, Canberra and Sydney. This round he did it in quite a different way as compared with the previous Chief Executive. On entry into Australia, Mr Tsang remained quiet during his first 3 days stay in Melbourne without much reaching out to the community of Hong Kong immigrants and thus had not stirred up much media coverage. As reflected from his visiting schedule, the primary purpose of his visit is to get the local mining industry connected up with the Hong Kong share market so as to strengthen Hong Kong s share in the Asia-wide market development. In other words, he is coming as a salesperson for promoting Hong Kong s services.

Given bulk of his visit only covered Melbourne and Perth, obviously he wanted to engage the governments and enterprises in Victoria and Western Australia in greater participation of economical development projects in Hong Kong. It was an indication that over the past years the Hong Kong government had been too confined in directing its resources to and emphasis in Sydney, rather than promoting the trade link between Hong Kong and Australia in a wider perspective.

For those who are not familiar with Australia may only know and regard Sydney as the prime centre of commerce and industry in Australia. It is very understandable that the Trade and Industry Office of the Hong Kong government is positioned in Sydney, it being the very major financial city. For anyone who has been in the country for long would realize each state is having its own economical strength. For instances, we have tourism in Queensland, winery in South Australia, mining in Western Australia, building industry in Victoria as well as the education industry all over the nation, all of these are equally the important components of our national economy. In the past it was due to the unawareness and negligence of the Hong Kong government officials that resulted in the inadequate tie with other major capital cities other than Sydney. Hopefully Mr Tsang s visit this round to other cities would bring upon improvement in the right direction.

As a Hong Kong immigrant, certainly I am looking forward to a strengthened cooperation and mutual benefit between Hong Kong and Australia in trade and commerce. To achieve a better outcome, I believe the Hong Kong government should divert more attention in promoting Hong Kong as an economical partner, and it seems to be a good timing to consider setting up trade and industry offices in Melbourne and other capital cities.
