Scholarships @ UVCE-Present and the Positive Future

We never understood the importance of scholarships on many students in our campus until we got

to know about the problems our fellow batchmates had with payment of fees, paying for the food, books

etc. How can we know about the issues of others when we couldn't understand the issues of those who

were close to us. However we were never averse to working for generating the momentum for the same.

It was during this that, Mr. Sanjay Bichu and friends from the batch of 1985 came up with the ini-

tiative of giving away scholarship to the needy students. Many applications were received and that was,

for us, an eye opener. The team formed by Mr Sanjay Bichu instituted the Mohan Kumar Scholarship

Award and after shortlisting and consensus, the scholarship was given to one of the studying UVCE stu-

dent.

And it was also the time, we were scouting for articles for SAMAPDA and came across the gold-

en jubilee edition of our campus magazine where scores of alumni wholeheartedly contributed to the

scholarship fund to help the students. And also we had been coming to college for quite some time and

we thought we should start the scholarship drive. It was a result of our awareness and at the same time,

raising awareness amongst our batchmates to contribute for the same. We wanted our batchmates to come

to the campus and understand the plight of the students. So, we spoke to Dr Venugopal K R Sir, Principal

of UVCE and Dr Deepa Shenoy Madam, through whom we got the needed faculty guidance and also the

extent to which teachers themselves were helping needy students.

We on behalf of the alumni totally appreciate the gesture from the faculty. We invited the applica-

tions for scholarship, shortlisted them based on our criterion and the fund we had. We invited our batch-

mates who took the interviews and contributed generously. At the end of the process, we were able to

give away scholarships for 9 students and we were very happy about for two reasons - one being that we

were able to help and the other was that we could motivate our batchmates who were moved by the situa-

tion that they promised to contribute whenever they can. This year, we were able to gather help from PDS

madam, HS Veena madam and with huge support from lecturers and fellow alumni; we were able to give

it away to 13 students.

But we have been very happy because of the fact that now many more alumni are pouring in with

their support for the scholarship cause. We hear that Mr B T Lakshman has donated for this cause and this

will be distributed to students through the University. And we have heard from many alumni who are

willing to support this cause. We just hope the support swells and never fades away. Last we heard that

there was an alumni initiative where they gave away scholarships to students and it indeed was a wonder-

ful gesture.

The momentum will grow more if the faculty and alumni have a conversation and contribute their

experience and intuition into this. We are very happy to see alumni involving themselves into this noble

cause. It will definitely create a platform for the students to grow, realize their dream without being hin-

dered by financial disability.

We, from the Team VisionUVCE, are committed to this cause and we wish nothing but welfare of

students and we support all initiatives the alumni come up with for the benefit of the students. We can be

reached at [email protected] for queries regarding what we did or for help. Also we have a trust ac-

count which we use for contributing for the welfare of students at UVCE. The account details of the same

The authors would like to state that:

* All the characters appearing in this article are completely fictitious and any resemblance are purely co-

incidental (You are a loser if you really believe this !!)

* All the characters are totally fictitious are invariable useless oafs hat even if they were real life charac-

ters you wouldn’t give a damn about them in any case.

* All the characters are totally fictitious but the resemblance’s most certainly are not. The puns, malicious

content, the spiteful acerbic remarks and the double entendres are also completely intentional.

* All the characters are totally fictitious and if the events or the characters appear absolutely bewildering

or totally obscure, the n we would like to assure that this is also completely intentional. But, if you look

behind this madness, you will find a method which is characteristic of UVCE.

Autumn (August-November)

It was running as fast as its little legs would carry it (which was in fact

quite fast!). It reached the foot of the library tree and clambered up to

safety. The squirrel paused and impishly looked down at the dog (a

sheep dog to be precise!), still at the foot of the tree. With it’s tail up

and it’s whole body taut with concentration, the dog looked up at the

squirrel. Whatever possibilities there were of this incident developing

into an interesting and exciting contest between the two were immedi-

ately disrupted by a man in a grey ill-fitting uniform, with an equally

ill-fitting cap who shooed the dog away. Well, you can’t blame the se-

curity for doing nothing, can you?

You see, he had clear instructions – “No loitering in the quad-

rangle either students or dogs”

“Well, ladies and whatever gentlemen are still out there, we welcome you to the quadrangle, the

heart, soul and pulse of UVCE”

They started coming(!) in one’s and two’s(!!), and occasionally a bigger group(!!!). But all of

them invariably came to the quadrangle. Some went to their respective notice boards and were furiously

scribbling down the timetable with the odd remark about a particular lecturer who has been assigned to

them or the timing of the lab. By now the flow had increased considerably but still all of them invariably

came to the quadrangle. They were settling down to the familiar patterns. Each group occupied their usual

positions. Some of them have been in these spots for years. Yet, some of them will be here for years to

come. Some may leave the college, many more may arrive, but all of them invariably came to the quad-

rangle.

They all invariably came to the Quadrangle

We have published lot many types of articles in SAMPADA so far. But we still felt something

was missing. When we were scrutinizing old College magazines, in Vinyasa 2000 we found an interesting

article which showcased a wonderful college days and memories of our friends. We thought it would be

good to share with our alumni in form of episodes. The first episode of Autumn is published in this edi-

tion and we will continue this in our next editions. Authors are : Ajay S (Mech98); Madhu M (CSE 99)

A loud, boisterous, all male group of the students has just walked into the quadrangle and they

have comfortably placed themselves on the steps in the front of the library. They seemedto be deeply en-

grossed in an intellectual conversation. Let’s just eavesdrop-

“Enu maga, evathu Electrical hudgeeru innu bandilla?”

“Enu maga, hange koothidya love failure-a?”

In case you haven’t guessed till now, these are the final Mech boys. But, not all of them

are having such stimulating conversations. There are other sub groups that are involved in heated discus-

sions. We shall dwell upon them later.

Close by, yet hidden from the direct view of the Principal’s office by the massive tree, an

unruly bunch of Electronics engineers(to be ones that is) are discussing the states their lives are currently

in. Led by a bespectacled table tennis player and another bespectacled gentleman with a hand in the sling,

spouting fiery and emotional speeches (we would like to assure you that the broken hand has nothing to

do anything with anything in the speech) that are about the motto “We are like this only”

Now some shrill feminine voices interrupt our decorous survey of the quadrangle. Oh, here

are the Electrical girls. They seem to be very involved in an animated discussion about their upcoming

throw ball match. Amongst them you see two tall, thin, non-descript men (??) who have no right to be

there, but are there in any case. These ‘electric’ gentlemen also answer to the unusual enough title of

‘Negotiators’! Since these gentleman work hard for the college, the union and the students ( especially of

the fairer sex) we shall gloss over this incongruous situation for the time being.

Sitting adjacent to them, we see the three Electrical musketeers. Well, almost. Well atleast

he tries very hard to be one. You see, he is a famed exponent of an obscure stream of martial arts from the

depths of Kerala. But this art, and the many others he is proficient in (fishing (compliments?) is one of

them!), are not enough when he plays out the well-known role of protector and godfather for the fairer sex

of UVCE. This is, in addition to the work that he puts in as the man in place(ment).

The other two female members of this trio also directly qualify for the title of musketeer,

for their beauty, intelligence and their amazingly high levels of tolerance and patience to all this. Remem-

ber the old line, “two’s company, three is a crowd!” One of them proves the old and well known law

“beauty+brain = constant” wrong (she’s the Topper dammit! while being so beautiful), while the other is

perfect example of the law that good things come in small packets.

(to be continued...)

Working for NGOs is a life-changing experience for many college

students

While college students have always been associated with co-

curricular activities designed to cater to their creative needs or to

showcase their sporting skills, there are some who are looking to

do their bit for a cause they believe in. The volunteer programmes

run by a lot of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are being

filled up by college students who are taking time off from their

course work and other activities to pitch in.

While some students feel that working at the grassroots level ra-

ther than debating about the overarching problems faced by socie-

ty is the way to go, some think working in an NGO is a great op-

portunity to learn what it takes to tackle developmental challenges while learning the ropes of working in

an organisation.

The Hindu EducationPlus spoke to a few college students working in NGOs about their experience and

how it supplements their course-work or teaches them life-lessons.

Sanjay Shetty, seventh semester, Civil Engineering, UVCE

I have been volunteering with an NGO for over a year now. I was interested in volunteering and started

off with a lot of fieldwork regarding volunteering requirements with various NGOs in Bangalore. In the

process, I met a lot of young and passionate people who had dedicated their life to the cause they believed

in. Getting a chance to interact with them provided me with a whole new array of thoughts, thoughts re-

lated to people I didn’t even know, thoughts that still overwhelm me.

In the course of my work at the organisation, I realised that the time I spent with kids who suffer from

cancer and AIDS but still smile, was valuable and the thoughts light up even my worst days. For me, it

was never about changing this world but to be involved in it. And as I continue on this path, I feel more

humane.

Medha Bhaskar, B.A.-LL.B, University Law College, Bangalore University

I have been associated with two NGOs throughout my college life. I was introduced to the idea of work-

ing with underprivilged children as my mother was a teacher. I joined an NGO that allowed me to do that

alongside my degree course.

At the NGO where I worked at, I was fascinated by how they taught life-skills to children through differ-

ent mediums like arts and computers.

The other NGO I worked for started out as helping out friends with the NGO's legal matters such as set-

ting up contracts and such. Later, since I learnt so much on the job and met an incredible team, I branched

out to other activities as well.

My experience in both the organisations has made me think long and hard about my future career choices.

UVCEian and a Humanitarian

The below article was published in The Hindu at - http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-

educationplus/time-well-spent/article4207761.ece .This is a highly motivating article that anyone can take

inspiration from. We feel that alumni should know about such students from our campus. Maybe a clap

from where you are sitting or send us a mail and we'd be glad to forward that to him.

HUMOUR@UVCE

Before I entered my engineering life, I used to feel my life was a kind of hectic

and tension-stick mind because I was in the worst phase of my life… I guess mentioning

it as WORST PHASE would sound odd, but actually it was. My BOARD EXAMS.

Huge workloads, tiring tuitions, assignments, pre-boards etc etc…. But still I had a wish

to achieve something in life, Something NEW… As I was not born with silver spoon in

mouth, I had that eager to become rich soon so that I could have things which I liked. To

fulfill all these colorful wishes the root was my BOARD EXAM… I won’t say I worked

hard. But had tried my level best to clear with all these… but as expected great tragedy occurred... My

results were not as good as I expected. So dreams totally got shattered. As everyone say never leave hope.

Even I had a strong feeling that I would do something wonders with knowledge I have. BUT I got a bad

rank in KCET (engineering entrance exam). It was around 9000 odd… sound really pathetic with that

rank…. Still I had my luck in hand so got the best college (I would like to call it) UVCE.

To say about my engineering life, it’s just the best life I have ever lived. Filled with fun and just

wonderful to experience (so called dangerous engineering life) it once you are into a college like UVCE.

Friends are the best part in this life. There is such a huge variety. All of different castes, multiple lan-

guages they speak, even the blood in them don’t seem to be same but they just become an adorable part of

your life. The lunch box we share, the jokes we crack, just wonderful as they sound... Friends are just like

crayons each of different colors but yet all are in the same box.

I am happy with what I am today. I don’t know to where I am destined in my life but with my per-

sonal experience I would say just enjoy each phase of your life. Life is so adventurous!!! Enjoy thrills and

thunders in your life... There is a thought which says ‘a person who would smile even in the worst phase

of his life, is the one who would be the most happiest.’ So my life is day by day becoming INCREDIBLE

with each second I live it..

Aishwarya Singh (1st year student)

Raghavan.D from 78 batch

I keep forwarding Sampada to all my classmates. This is one of the feedback received.

For your information please.

James Kumar from 78 batch

Thanks Raghavan,

This one is great as the parody from 'Carribeans', perhaps summed up the expressions of most of us in

those days, as question paper setters believed in originality(may be with copyrights so as not to repro-

duce any questions) , and scoring was not easy.

Of course Roddam Narasimha is an icon in Aviation circles here, for his work, and Padma Awards are

but incidental as the work will speak for itself, and of course we are proud that he was our Senior.

The Venn diagram is even more ingenious, kudos to the authors / editorial team , if it can be con-

veyed.

L.R.Manjunatha.UVCE.Civil 1988 batch

Dear all Sampada team.I am interested to be part of your team.Kindly let me know how i can contrib-

ute.

Achutha Herur,Civil Dept 1985-1990.

I have transferred Rs. 5000/- to VISIONUVCE A/C. Please make use of this amount to any of your

next initiatives. I will try my best to talk to my batch mates and see if they can also donate.

You are doing a good job. All the best.

Rathan Babu , EEE 1963-64 Batch

Thank you for the nice 36th Edition of SAMPADA & giving space for our group news letter in your

WEB. I am sharing few of our activity for the information of Editorial Board.

As an individual Alumni member, I only wish to know the present details of the activities in the

COLLEGE and watch your activities with joy- Curtsey the WEB world and media.

Staying far away, I will not be in a position to meet you & participate with the active organisers( Busy

Bees), to know your visions and ideas for the fraternity/ college/ University/ and its students.

Over the past few weeks, we have had alumni send us their reactions through their kind words.

We have collated those mails and put it here. They are just an overview of the alumni and their feed-

back for us. And all of these have been positive and we are happy about

that. We would like to feature if there are complaints about us too.

We are thankful to the Humor@UVCE team for their cartoons,

those funny lines and the invaluable assistance they have been providing

us with. One of our active alumni, Mr Rathan Babu has been very kind to

send us the newsletters and articles. He is always ahead to appreaciate

when we do good. We will feature his article in full length in the coming

edition.

And there have been few issues with our mail server and we haven't kept up with our policy of

replying to every mail because of that issue. We apologize for the miss. We will be back on track

soon. And finally the space for guest editorial is still open and we would like to feature your words.

And feedback is always welcome and they are the propellants for us.
