TITLE:

Android OS* vs Mac OS (The leading OS by

2012)

*operating system

Introduction:

In the modern world nothing escapes competition. Apples OS

Mac has enjoyed customer loyalty and brand goodwill over the

year but Android is more reliable, faster and customer

oriented. It shall be hence a clash of Titans between these two.

Findings:

Research on Android OS andMac OS

2011 was a fantastic year for Google's operating system, Android. Itssmartphone market share has been growing rapidly. Accordingly toGartner, Android comprised about 53% of the smartphone shipments inthe third quarter of 2011, followed by 17% with the Symbian operatingsystem and 15% with iOS from Apple. Apple's market share fell 16.6%from a year ago.

Apps Market Looking at these numbers, it's safe to say that Google is currentlywinning the race for the smartphone market share. That may be badnews for Apple, but they are still very much ahead in the race. Appleleads Android in the apps market, with the Apple Store having 18 billiondownloads, while Android has just reached 10 billion downloads in theAndroid Marketplace. However, Android is certainly catching up, with a

growth rate of 1 billion downloads per month. At this pace, it's just amatter of time before the Android Marketplace overtakes the AppleStore in apps downloads.

While there is a lot of buzz surrounding the growth of Android, theApple Store still beats the Android Marketplace in a very important area- revenues. Even though Google has a huge market share in the appsfield, its Android market doesn't make publishers nearly as much money

as Apple does. The app developers still choose iOS first for launchingany app because they see more profit potential. According to Pipar Jaffray, a U.S. investment banking firm, Android developers earn just7% of what iOS Apple Store earns for its developers.

In terms of numbers, Apple's App Store has earned about $4.9 billion in

Page 6: SIDDHANT HONAWAR

8/3/2019 SIDDHANT HONAWAR

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/siddhant-honawar 6/23

gross revenue for paid apps, while the Android Marketplace is estimatedto have earned just $330 million in that market. Apple is beatingAndroid in this area, primarily because of its overwhelming success inthe paid apps market. There are far more free apps on an Android than

on an iPhone or iPad. About 14% of Apple's app downloads are paidones, compared to only 1% for Android. Google is new to the paid apps

business and still has to learn how to make it into a major revenue-earner.

Platform

The main reason behind such a huge difference in revenues is thecultural gap between these two platforms. Apple has been able to build

an ecosystem around its products that makes users hard-pressed toswitch. However, Android still doesn't have any such environment thatmakes people stick to it, which is a great opportunity for Apple.

Even the way the two marketplaces are organized is different. WhileApple's app store is well-organized and has a natural sales orientation, the Android market is a bit chaotic, with more of a focus on free stuff. This is the reason why many quality developers are hesitant to try outtheir apps on the Android platform; they are competing with a lot of free

apps and monetizing may be difficult. The general trend has been tomake the app for Apple and if it becomes popular and successful, thengo for an Android version.

Improving the user interface of the android market may be an easy thingto do for Google, but realizing the need for it is what's important.

However, Android does present some advantages for advertisers over

the Apple's App Store. Because of the sheer size of its user base, it's alucrative area for businesses to promote their brands. Launching an appon Android will give them more eyeballs than launching it in iOS.

      Comparing Key Features:

      Voice Commands:

Apple¶s Siri is, hands down, one of the best features thatiPhone 4S has to offer. It¶s exclusive to the iPhone 4S for now, so that narrows down your phone

choices drastically if you want this feature. Of course, voice commands are nothing new but Apple¶simplementation of this kind of service made it appealing tomore people, especially since it¶s front and center as wellas highly advertised. Siri handles your calendar appointments, calls and texts your friends and even doessome web researching for you if you like. It¶s just in betathough and its language and country support is very limited

at the moment.

For Android, there¶s Voice Actions, which has beenavailable since Froyo (Android 2.2) and was given somemuch needed polish in ICS. In terms of usage, VoiceActions and Siri do lots of things similarly but whereas Siri

comes out on top in terms of implementation, VoiceActions has the better feature set as it can do turn-by-turnvoice-guided navigation. In the US, Voice Actions isintegrated into the Google Maps app which means that it

Page 8: SIDDHANT HONAWAR

8/3/2019 SIDDHANT HONAWAR

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/siddhant-honawar 8/23

can replace your car¶s GPS if you trust Google¶s directionsenough.

Overall, Siri is more conversational and intuitive, which helps it produceresults that better match what you want from it. Voice Actions, though, does very well in search as well as when it comes to navigation. VoiceActions can also be activated using your voice while Siri needs aspecific action to activate such as holding the home button or placing the

 phone by your ear.

CAMERA:      Similar to Voice Commands, it¶s again clear that ICS offers more

shooting options and tweaks than those found on iOS 5. One of theadded features in ICS is a new panoramic mode where you cantake multiple shots that are stitched together for an easy panoramiclandscape. Android¶s latest also allows the user to set image levelsand filters, so there¶s more things to tinker with when improvingyour photos.

Apple has also come up with some enhancements to its camerasuch as the ability to crop and rotate images, red-eye reduction, auto enhancement, and grid lines while taking a shot, but you¶llhave to admit that these are rather basic. That¶s not to say that theiPhone 4S camera is not up to par because as image quality goes, many reviewers have given it a thumbs up, with some claimingthat it could even be a replacement for your average point and

shoot camera. Comparing picture quality with ICS, however, is nota valid point as this will depend on the device running the latestAndroid version.

Notifications       If you¶ve already used an Android device, you already know that

Apple¶s version of notifications on iOS 5±while executed verywell±has very striking resemblance to the same feature found onICS and previous Android versions. In ICS, there were only minor tweaks done on notifications such as showing the thumbnails of apps currently running and allowing a full drop down even whileon your lock screen.

For iOS 5 users, the presence of a notifications center has been avery welcome development. Apple previously resorted to badgesand notification alerts scattered all over your springboard. But withits latest iOS version, it added a notifications center that even popsup on the lock screen. Apple also added banner-style alerts thatnotify you of events in a non-intrusive way. Badges and

notification alerts are still present so those who prefer using thoseare still welcome to use it.

      Internet Browsing

One of the key functions of your smartphone is accessing the webso it makes sense for both platforms to add new features to analready very capable built-in browser. For ICS, Google addedChrome bookmarks sync and also allows you to save full web

pages for later browsing. It¶s a very useful feature for those who donot have an unlimited data plan. ICS also added an incognito modeto its browser for those in need of privacy and security.

Apple also got busy upgrading its mobile Safari by adding tabbed browsing for the iPad and iPad 2, private browsing, Safari Reader and Reading List±although the latter is quite limited in featurescompared to ICS¶ offline viewer. Side by side though, each stock

browser does pretty well in terms of speed and navigation.

Page 12: SIDDHANT HONAWAR

Cloud Storage:        Just like with their notifications center, Apple seems to be a step behind on

cloud storage as it only introduced iCloud recently on iOS 5 while Androidusers have been enjoying that feature for some time already. Android¶scloud storage, however, was limited to apps and Google only updated itrecently to include music and photos.

iCloud may be late but it certainly arrived with a heap of features, includingiTunes Match and Photo Stream, to name a few. The counterpart for iTunesMatch is Google Music, with the latter offering its service for free and Applecharging around $25 for a one-year usage.

If you¶re already using many of Google¶s other services like Gmail and

Google Docs, then you might be leaning more towards ICS but if you relyheavily on iWork, iLife or use a Mac, then iCloud makes a strong case for going with iOS 5.

Page 13: SIDDHANT HONAWAR

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/siddhant-honawar 13/23

Extra Features:        While the two platforms have a lot of similarities (though with different

implementations), there are also a few nifty features that Google and Apple

added to their respective mobile operating systems. For ICS there¶s Face

Unlock, which, as the name suggests needs you to put the phone in front of your face to access it. There¶s also a new People app, which is actually theContacts app that now has a new magazine look. Here your contacts are allintegrated together, including those from your social media accounts, so it¶seasier to contact your family and friends. There¶s also no need to tweak your device to allow you to get a screenshot as it is now natively supported(admittedly though iOS already has this feature for quite some time).

Apple also threw in some neat features for iOS 5 including Newsstand, which is similar to iBooks but is geared towards magazines and publicationsinstead of books. iOS 5 also has Twitter built right into it so frequent usersof the social messaging service can share their photos, videos, links, and

contacts much more easily and quickly. There¶s also a native Reminders appfor todos, Find My iPhone for locating missing devices. Apple alsointroduces a number of wireless connectivity features such as AirPlay whichlets you wirelessly share your screen to an Apple TV, AirPrint whichenables wireless printing and wireless sync which lets forego the cord whendoing backups, syncing data and doing remote app installation.

Hardware Comparison        Android offers more options for those who want to get a taste of ICS, with

the latter to be rolled out to older models before the Nexus. Among thoseexpected to get ICS are Motorola¶s Droid RAZR and Droid Bionic, LGOptimus 2X, HTC¶s Vivid, Sensation, Amaze 4G, Rezound, EVO 3D andEVO Design 4G. For iOS 5, Apple released the update to the iPhone 3GSand iPhone 4 (and to the iPhone 4S as well) and the original iPad and iPad 2.

A direct comparison of features and specs will always fall on currentflagship models Galaxy Nexus by Samsung and Apple¶s iPhone 4S as they

both arrived with the latest operating system in tow so it¶s worth noting howthey stack up against each other

Some of the advantages of the Galaxy Nexus is that it has more RAM (1 GBcompared to 512MB on iPhone 4S); Faster downloads at 21.0MBits/scompared to 14.4MBits/s by the iPhone; and better screen size with a higher screen resolution. The Nexus has a 4.65-inch display at a resolution of 720×1280 pixels while the iPhone 4S has retained the same 3.5-inch screensize with a resolution of 640×960 pixels. The Galaxy Nexus also has anHDMI output built-in while you need an adapter for the iPhone 4S.

IPHONE VS ANDROID:

Features Android iPhone Operating System (OS) made by:  Google, Open Handset Alliance

(mostly cellphone

manufacturers), and the Open

Source community. Android is

still being released by Google. It

is open source but it is still under

strong guidance from Google. It

is not the wild wild west like

open source Linux that has no

central control. Android has the

advantage of BOTH open source

and central control of a powerfuland innovative company.

Proprietary to Apple.

Only Apple can make changesto the iOS.

Hardware design:

HTC, Sony, Motorola,Samsung, LG, Garmin, Dell,Archos, Acer, Asus, Kyocera, and the list is growing.

This is one significantadvantage over the iPhone:CHOICES.

This feature is so basic andessential that even the originalfirst generation Palm PilotPDA (small pocket device)from 1996 (yes, over 14 years

ago) supports it.

Finally on newer iPhone OS

Apple was so proud of this

feature that it was included on

their press release presentation.

Apps. Installation:  Installing apps is easier than

iPhone. Free apps don't require a

password each time you try to

install anything. You don't need

iTunes. With paid Apps, you are

only required to enter your info

on Android Market once.

Easy, but not as easy as Android.

Need iTunes the first time you

activate the iPhone.

Multi-touch screen:  Now: Yes (official) since Feb2, 2010.

Before: Yes and No.

Multi-touch is native toAndroid, just disabled for theU.S. market. Has thissomething to do with Apple¶scopyright or is it because of the cozy relationship betweenGoogle¶s top executivesharing Apple¶s board of directors? This mounts to aconflict of interest to Google¶sshare holders and thatrelationship is also beinginvestigated by the FederalTrade Commission onantitrust issues (The NewYork Times, August 3, 2009).

The FTC inquiry begun onMay 4, 2009.

See Timeline as eventunfolded between May 4,2009 thru October 12, 2009.

Yes

In January of 2009, Apple was planning to sue Palm over multi-touch patents. Just likein the 1980s Apple suedMicrosoft over the ³look andfeel´ of Windows. At that timeApple had no merit becausethe Graphical User Interface(windowing environment) wasfirst invented by Xerox notApple. Turned out that Apple patent for the multi-touch isalso in question because theyare now on the receiving endof the lawsuit by ElanMicroelectronics of Taiwanfor patent infringement of their multi-touch technology

Customer Satisfaction:

The most important aspect or area of function of a mobile is that of

Customer Satisfaction. A cell phone OS may provide various featuresbut in the end the Customer has the final decision and hence it is

important that the product pleases the customer.

Apple OS:

Apple holds a huge benefit in case of Brand Loyalty. It can be easily saidthat if a customer buys an Apple, he will be most surely to buy it again.

When the iPhone 4 came out last summer, People said this:

This won't be remembered as the year the iPhone got folders, a faster

chip, or a gyroscope. This will be remembered as the year the iPhone

stopped paving the way and started transitioning into the third-place

platform -- albeit, the very pretty third-place platform -- it's destined to

become.

I couldn't ask for a better example than Apple's iPhone 4S release. The

real news of the week isn't that Apple released a new iPhone. It's that

Apple stopped trying to raise the bar and started just reaching for it

instead.

The iPhone 4S, as Apple boldly points out in its press materials, is the

"first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to send andreceive." Great -- but aside from the iPhone, most phones don't have

consistent problems with hardware-caused call-dropping.

Page 20: SIDDHANT HONAWAR

8/3/2019 SIDDHANT HONAWAR

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/siddhant-honawar 20/23

Android OS:

Although new, Android has been able to capture the Market Really

well.P

eople have shown a favorable response towards hence boostingits sales. Android has fast speed, better display resolution and easy to

use apps.

Finally, bear in mind that none of this even considers what we'll see,

when Google will likely reveal its next-gen Android Ice Cream Sandwich

OS and a new Samsung Nexus phone.

Page 21: SIDDHANT HONAWAR

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/siddhant-honawar 21/23

Conclusion:

y  It¶s not always black and white in determining which is the better mobile

operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich or iOS 5, or the better phone overall,Galaxy Nexus or iPhone 4S.

y  As the rundown of the features of each OS shows, there are similarities andunique features as well so it¶s up to you to really find out which features are

a match to your needs.

y  Each platform offers several hundred thousand apps to its users, so that¶sone way to level the field with third-party developers filling in the gaps of

each system.

y  One thing that might help you decide is how much you use the halo of

services and products surrounding each platform: If you¶re an avid Googleuser and want to have seamless experience between their browser-basedservices onto your mobile, buying an ICS tablet or phone should suit youwell.

y  On the flip side, if you own a Mac and use it as your main computer, gettingan iPhone or iPad might be a wiser decision.

y  It has been noticed as per the Survey conducted that there has been a gradualshift from iPhone to Android. This may be because of the fact that Androidis user friendly and affordable.

y  Hence, it can be concluded that Android OS can be the most used OS by theend 2012.
