Citalopram

Jaw tremor: case reportA 58-year-old woman with a depressive disorder started

treatment with citalopram 20 mg/day. Three days later, shedeveloped a jaw tremor; the abnormal movements were upand down, and did not change when she brought her teethtogether or drank from a glass. Her jaw did not show deviationwhen she opened her mouth and there was no tongue tremor.Electrophysiological investigation of the masseter, digastricand orbicularis oris muscles revealed spontaneous, rhythmicactivity that was harmonic and continuous at 5–6 Hz/sec.Citalopram was discontinued and, after 5 days, her tremor hadresolved, with no recurrence during 6 months’ follow-up.

Author comment: "In our case, citalopram-induced jawtremor can be explained by indirect inhibitory effect oncentral dopaminergic activity."Tarlaci S. Citalopram-induced jaw tremor. Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery107: 73-75, No. 1, Dec 2004 - Turkey 807219879
