Clomipramine
Adverse neonatal effects Two babies born to mothers taking c1omipramind200mg/ day and IOOmg/ day, respectively) for depression during pregnancy, were physically normal at birth
but later deteriorated. In both cases they became cyanotic, and tachypnoeic with respiratory acidosis. While the cyanosis and acidosis responded to oxygen and the neurological symptoms to phenobarbitone (phenobarbital), tachypnoea and feeding difficulties persisted for 16 days in one case. Both children subsequently showed normal development. 'Treatment with tricyclic antidepressants in late pregnancy appears to have a well defined ill effect on the Ileonate. alld therefore should be avoided. (f possible.'
