Reactions 1274 - 17 Oct 2009 O Mepivacaine overdose Dysarthria, myoclonus and confusion following medication error, treated with soya oil emulsion: case report A 19-year-old woman received local anaesthesia with mepivacaine for the repair of a wrist injury. Due to a medication error, she received a 50mL injection of 2% mepivacaine (1000mg) instead of 50mL of 1% mepivacaine (500mg). A few minutes later, she reported dysarthria; she subsequently developed myoclonia of her arms which progressively worsened, and she became confused. Oxygen, clonazepam and midazolam were administered with no improvement. She received 100mL of 20% IV soya oil emulsion [Medialipide] and her symptoms resolved immediately.
