Reactions 483 - 8 Jan 1994 Theophylline/sulfasalazine Anorexia and deafness: 2 case reports Two examples of adverse effects which were detected only after the drug was withdrawn are detailed below. These 2 reports describe long-term anorexia associated with theophylline and long-term deafness and tinnitus associated with sulfasalazine. A 60-year-old man with severe chronic obstructive airways disease experienced a chronic lack of appetite in the absence of nausea, and lost body weight after several years’ treatment with salbutamol [albuterol], beclomethasone diproprionate and theophylline [details of drug dosage and frequency not stated]. After theophylline was withdrawn, the patient’s appetite improved and he regained weight. A 53-year-old man received sulfasalazine 1g bid for 2 years as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Concomitant medication included naproxen and sodium aurothiomalate. When sulfasalazine therapy was replaced with methotrexate, the patient remarked that ‘he could hear again and the ringing in his ears stopped’. Long-standing adverse reactions.
