Reactions 1125 - 28 Oct 2006 Bupivacaine Transient urinary incontinence following intrathecal administration: case report A 39-year-old man received 3mL of 0.5% bupivacaine in dextrose for subarachnoid anaesthesia prior to elective vascular surgery in his lower extremities. Surgery was uneventful; however, 92 minutes after the intrathecal injection, and after he had shown signs of motor and sensory recovery, he reported urinary incontinence. A bladder catheter was inserted. At the fourth-hour follow-up, he received dexamethasone. After 5 hours, the motor block had resolved completely. His urinary incontinence had resolved completely after 25 hours. After 2 days, he was discharged without sequelae. Author comment: "We believe the transient incontinence was likely due to bupivacaine neurotoxicity." Basaranoglu G, et al.
