Transient urinary incontinence following intrathecaladministration: case report
A 39-year-old man received 3mL of 0.5% bupivacaine indextrose for subarachnoid anaesthesia prior to electivevascular surgery in his lower extremities. Surgery wasuneventful; however, 92 minutes after the intrathecalinjection, and after he had shown signs of motor and sensoryrecovery, he reported urinary incontinence. A bladder catheterwas inserted. At the fourth-hour follow-up, he receiveddexamethasone. After 5 hours, the motor block had resolvedcompletely. His urinary incontinence had resolved completelyafter 25 hours. After 2 days, he was discharged withoutsequelae.
Author comment: "We believe the transient incontinencewas likely due to bupivacaine neurotoxicity."Basaranoglu G, et al. Transient urinary incontinence after subarachnoid anesthesiawith 0.5% heavy bupivacaine. Anesthesia and Analgesia 103: 1051, No. 4, 1 Oct2006 - Turkey 801045275
