Reactions 1422 - 6 Oct 2012 Citalopram Nightmares: case report A 55-year-old man presented in March 2011 with feelings of depression, anhedonia and hopelessness, poor sleep, low energy level and reduced concentration. He was hospitalised and began receiving oral citalopram 20mg daily for depression; his usual medications, including benazepril, nifedipine, warfarin and omeprazole were restarted. On the sixth day of citalopram therapy he experienced scary, vivid dreams in which he saw himself jumping in front of a train. He said the dreams were intense and memorable, and similar nightmares occurred for the next 2 days. He awoke each time, anxious and frightened. Citalopram was switched to bupropion and, 1 day later, his nightmares stopped. Author comment: "In our patient, the temporal relationship between the initiation of treatment with citalopram and onset of nightmares suggest a causal etiology." Arora G, et al.
