A 47-year-old man was treated with citalopram 60 mg/day [duration of therapy not stated] for depression. Following the start of therapy, he experienced anorgasmia. When the dosage of citalopram was decreased to 40 mg/day anorgasmia improved, but his depressive symptoms started to re-emerge. Initially, the man was treated with cyproheptadine 2mg, but no effect on anorgasmia was noted. He was then given cyproheptadine 4mg the evening prior to intercourse, and his anorgasmia resolved. He did not experience any adverse effects over a 6-month period. He decided to stop taking citalopram and his depressive symptoms recurred. He was then treated with fluoxetine and he subsequently experienced some delay in ejaculation. Author comment: ‘Medline search up to May 1995 did not result in any information concerning citalopram-induced sexual side effects.’ Lauerma H.
