Reactions 915 - 17 Aug 2002 Citalopram Hyponatraemia in an elderly patient: case report An elderly man [age not stated] developed hyponatraemia while receiving citalopram for anxiety and depression. The man developed visual hallucinations, paranoid delusions, forgetfulness, agitation, and suicidal and homicidal ideation subsequent to starting treatment with citalopram 10mg once daily [duration of treatment not stated]. He had stopped taking citalopram several days before presentation. He was admitted to hospital and laboratory investigations revealed serum and urinary sodium levels of 131 mmol/L each, and serum and urinary osmolalities of 275 and 460 mOsm/kg, respectively. Three days after admission the man’s serum sodium level had increased to 134 mmol/L and he was diagnosed with delirium secondary to hyponatraemia.
