Rhabdomyolysis in an elderly patient: casereport
A 77-year-old man developed rhabdomyolysis whilereceiving dexamethasone, lenalidomide and pravastatin[dosage and route information incomplete].
The man, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in2007, began oral lenalidomide 25mg daily, plusdexamethasone on 8 November 2010. His history alsoincluded hypercholesterolaemia, for which he had receivedpravastatin since February 2009. On 13 November 2010,he developed sudden muscle pain in his upper arms, aswell as fever, extremity weakness and an inability to walk.Following admission, tests revealed an elevated creatinekinase level, slightly impaired renal function andmyoglobinuria. Rhabdomyolysis was diagnosed.
Lenalidomide and pravastatin were withdrawn, and theman received hydration. On hospital day 2, his creatinekinase increased to 16 126 IU/L and he experienced musclepain in his thighs; however, his symptoms subsequentlyregressed. By day 10, his laboratory values normalised andhis muscle symptoms resolved. On day 36, he wasdischarged.Urata C, et al.
