His baseline mood status may have been mildly hypomanic. The man noted increased energy within days of starting prasterone, but within 2 weeks his wife noticed worsening psychomotor acceleration, insomnia, irritability and grandiosity. Approximately 4 months after he started prasterone, the patient required involuntary hospitalisation because of his worsening symptoms of mania. One week earlier, he had decreased his dosage of prasterone to 25 mg/day because of his wife’s concerns about his mood changes. The patient was treated with haloperidol and valproate semisodium and his symptoms resolved over several weeks. Haloperidol was tapered and discontinued. Four months after his hospitalisation, the man remained on valproate semisodium and was asymptomatic.
