Delirium and paraphasia in an elderly patient:case report
A 76-year-old man developed delirium and paraphasiawhile receiving ropinirole.
The man, who had been admitted with herpesencephalitis, developed apathy and depression. He startedreceiving oral ropinirole 0.25 mg/day on hospital day 62.On day 71, his apathy improved, and ropinirole wasincreased to 0.75 mg/day. On day 72, he became deliriousand paraphasic during the night, crying out in a loud voiceand speaking nonsense words. He also became violent andrude.
Ropinirole was reduced to 0.25 mg/day on day 73, andthe man’s delirium and paraphasia subsequentlydisappeared. Ropinirole was further reduced to0.125 mg/day as his mental state stabilised, and waswithdrawn on day 127.
Author comment: "Our patient responded to ropinirolewithin 10 days and reached his maximum improvement atabout 3 weeks.
