An unexpected, yet beautiful transformation called UVCE

There’s just something magi-cal about our college – UVCE. It’s quite impossible to express in words the 4 years... My memoirs of UVCE and the

journey thereafter…. When I was approached by Team Sampada to write an article, the first thought that rang in my mind was, “Why, of all, me..???”.

Every time the editorial is needed, we think to ourselves, is it going to be business as usu-

al with UVCE.! But surprisingly we’ve never had to do go through that mindset as there’s some-

thing to cheer about UVCE and it has been in a continuum.

These days we have been going to lot of weddings of friends who

were from our batch which is an indication that people from our batch will be

busier going forward and the support we used to get from then would certain-

ly die down gradually. This brings us to the aspect of looking out for fresh

minds and as expected it has been real hard to find them. We have had our

seniors regularly visit UVCE once they were out and we have been there in

college often however we have observed that the same attachment has dwin-

dled with the recent batches and it is not a good sign. If we take the example

of any successful initiative, there is a record of successful passage of responsibilities that were

handled with fresh set of ideas. That is what we are craving for. Yes, we have been doing it and

we definitely will take it a longer mile but freshness is something that won’t happen until there’s

a change of ideas and outlook. So we hereby urge all the UVCEians to join hands with us to do

our bit for UVCE.

Team VisionUVCE will be completing 3 years during September and we have a slew of

plans that we want to come out with. Take this as an initial invitation to help us make those

plans a success. Scholarships are something we are betting big on, Vinimaya is in nascent stages

and few more initiatives afresh are in offing too. So there’s lot of scope to help UVCE and

there’s good amount of practical learning too. So get in touch with us to get closer to UVCE.

This edition of sampada will feature our own professor from Mech department who has

created ripples in the field of implants that could as well be a boon for the field of orthope-

dics. We sure will try to give it a good visibility.

And the champions are back..!! The new VU champs

have been announced and they’re the buddies who have stepped

ahead to do their bit for UVCE and we rightfully recognize them

for their efforts. And that’s not it. Our batch-mate Sanju has been

a instrumental guy in propelling students to join UVCE in his

native and also has been wonderful flag-bearer of UVCE.

We have Shravanthi to give us an account of the last 7 years – that includes her UVCE

and post-UVCE experiences. I’m sure many would relate themselves to what she has to share.

And we have Dattanna gracing the article in Sampada and adding colour to this edition. And we

have a student who wants to share his thoughts, experiences and his journey to IIM.

And above all, we have Sir MV guiding us through his wonderful and thought provoking

speech. With hopes that we could ring a bell in every UVCEians heart…

Implanting a life saver for millions around the world..!

A Bangalore-based mechanical

engineer has made the world sit up and

take note after he created implants that

could change the future of orthopaedic

surgery. If tests are successful, it would

mean the end of expensive and heavy metal implants that patients the world over have to deal with.

The 40-year-old H G Hanumantharaju, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Uni-

versity Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Bangalore University, and his team of students

have been busy working on cost-effective bio-material objects that could either repair or replace de-

funct human organs.

First on their list is creating light-weight and cost-effective leg implants for which Hanuman-

tharaju earned a Ph D degree from Bangalore University last week. His students have also been work-

ing on synthetic kidneys and stents that could replace actual nerves in the human body.

Lowcost implants

Hanumantharaju told Bangalore Mirror, “I was drawn towards the concept of biomedical

equipment that work on the principles of mechanical engineering. As it helps people directly, I decid-

ed to work on bio-material equipment.” Several rounds of interactions with reputed orthopaedic sur-

geons and cardiologists from Bangalore and elsewhere revealed that patients are fitted with stainless

steel grade titanium alloy which is heavier, making walking difficult. In more than 50 per cent cases,

the implants fail, he explained. One reason for this is the density. The normal density of the bone is

2000 kg/m3 or 2 gm/cc. But the density of existing implants in the market is 8000 kg/m3 or 8 gms/cc.

“The change in the density was the major culprit and I began looking for alternative material

whose density could either match human bones or weigh little less. Extensive study, testing and rigor-

ous research of existing literature yielded us the alternative PEEK or Polyethe retherketone, alumina, a

ceramic material, and hydroxyapatite coating material which is made of fish bone and egg white,” ex-

plained Hanumantharaju.

The materials were subjected to five different kinds of tests including strength, corrosion,

wearing property and toxic elements. Any material that is inserted into the human body should with

stand corrosion. This apart, the equipment undergoes a lot of wear and tear due to a great deal of

movement. But all these material showed enough strength to withstand these effects. “Further, we add-

ed features like filling PEEK sticks with 30 per cent glass powder to give it more stability,” said Dr H

K Shivanand, associate professor of mechanical engineering at UVCE and Hanumantharaju's Ph D

guide.

Global accolades

Not limiting himself to his Ph D thesis, Hanumantharaju took his invention to the global level

by presenting papers at several international seminars, including Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in

Bangalore, Cairo in Egypt, Greece, US and Bangkok where many appreciated his work. “We are now

approaching the Medical Council of India (MCI) to conduct in-vivo and in-vitro tests where these im-

plants will first be tested on mammals like cats and dogs before being tried on humans.”

Engineer turns medico

Though a mechanical engineer, medical engineering is not a new subject for Hanumantharaju.

Born into a family of desi doctors who cure bone fractures through native techniques, Hanumantharaju

always wanted to do something useful for society instead of working on machines and software that

never directly help people.

“My grandfather is known as Kaikattu Muniyappa around Nelamangala. Later on, my father

Ganga Hanumaiah too followed in his footsteps after retiring as a government school teacher. My

family background led me towards bio-material technology - designing artificial human body parts. I

was instrumental in introducing the subject as one of the optionals during the M Tech degree. No other

engineering or medical college or IITs in India have this subject and we are proud to have it,” he said.

AN UNEXPECTED, YET BEAUTIFUL TRANSFORMATION CALLED UVCE

There’s just something magical about our college – UVCE. It’s quite impossible to express in

words the 4 years that have passed by, all that I’ve done while at this college, the special friends I’ve

made and what this college means to me. I’m just going to write a short piece here of what I felt like

before joining this college and how I feel like now after the metamorphosis.

When I selected this college during the CET counselling, I really didn’t know what to expect

after hearing so many mixed reviews. There were the bad ones – Only College under Bangalore Univer-

sity, Government college, Infrastructure Is lacking, no teachers and then there some good ones – Excel-

lent Placement, experienced faculty, lots of free time and the like. At the end, I chose this college at the

words of some of the alumni I knew. Since then, there’s never been a moment I’ve ever had to look

back in regret at the decision.

The experiences during these 4 years have been simply fan-

tastic and plentiful. I have so many funny, stupid, emotional, naugh-

ty and never forgettable memories attached to the college, its teach-

ers and my friends. With 4 fests annually, it’s assured that there’s

something to keep looking forward to and working towards. An active

IEEE student branch has assured that I was constantly in the midst of many of the activities happening-

Kagada, Impetus, Programmers club being the main and in parallel constantly learning so many things-

technical and managerial. The college offers a mixed bag that just seem to blend amazingly well with

each other- A set of best friends, batch mates, seniors, juniors and teachers each of who have equally

contributed to making life better. Seniors are always there to share their experiences and teach you the

tricks of the trade. Similarly it’s a special feeling when I spend time with juniors. Share my experiences

and help them find their own way. Batch mates, well spending 4 years with them, almost all of them

end up becoming a friend in some way or the other. Best friends are always there for all your experienc-

es, and we get to know each other inside out. Despite it being the end of the college journey, I know

nothing much will change as we will continue to remain the same best of buddies and we’ve got many

things planned up to give back to our college. Last and definitely not the least, teachers are really help-

ful in their trust in us students to do things for ourselves, yet keeping an overseeing eye upon us and re-

directing us whenever we’re lost. They also allow us to have enough free time for us to learn other

things and ensure there are plentiful of extra-curricular activities for us to indulge ourselves in.

Before UVCE, I would say I was just another average student with not much knowledge of the

world, but a passion to learn and grow. But this college has transformed me, instilled courage to be

brave in whatever decision I take and face the challenges that may come. I’ve learnt how to think out of

the box and be a pioneer. Learnt things like how to manage resources and time, work with others, etc.

Most importantly I’ve learned to take things with a smile and find joy in everything that we do. Overall,

I feel a transformed person and am more confident not just to stand on my own two feet but also help

others get there. Because of that, I feel, this is definitely the place to study engineering and become a real “ENGINEER”. And that's why I love my UVCE- a place inscribed forever into my heart.

If, on the contrary, there is neglect or inadequate progress, an alarm should be raised by the

Committee so that men in charge may be changed and further revised arrangements made to ensure pro-

gress according to programme. Consideration should of course be given when any unforeseen defects

and handicaps have been encountered during the quarter.

Under this arrangement the responsibility will be thrown also on the officers and contractors in

immediate charge of the work. Unless the element of fear or hope is introduced in this manner and hon-

est effective supervision maintained, satisfactory progress of the plan cannot be ensured.

I am informed that the Government of India have sanctioned a grant of Rs. 10 lakhs to the four

Engineering Colleges in the State on condition that the Colleges restrict the number of annual admis-

sions to a total of 360 students in all against 614 admitted last year. The Government have done this

with a view to increasing efficiency and orders seem to have been issued on the recommendations of a

Committee.

The usual practice when a grant is given is to increase facili-

ties for admissions. Reduction in this case would be unfortunate in

more respects than one as there is a great demand for engineering

education at present. The past freedom given to these Colleges, it is

universally admitted, has done much good and brought remunera-

tive employment to many young men. It seems premature to bring

in restrictions to admissions at this stage. It seems desirable to leave

the number of admissions at the present level, unaffected for per-

haps another six years, until there is a surfeit in the supply of engi-

neers in Mysore and neighboring States.

ENGINEERING MARVELS-

Very recently, I had occasion to collect a list of engineering marvels, or structures of unusual

size or importance, nearly all of which I had seen in various parts of the world during my travels. I will

give some of them here as they may interest the student population in the audience.

1. The highest among buildings in New York, known as sky-scrapers is the Empire State Building,

1,472 feet or more than a quarter of a mile high. It is made up of 102 storeys stand has enough floor

space to shelter a city of 80,000 people. The highest building in India is the Government Secretariat

in Calcutta recently constructed which is 13 storeys high.

2. The Eiffel Tower in Paris which is 985 feet high is the highest of its kind in Europe.

3. Visitors to England are aware that a road is taken under the River Thames in London through a sub-

way or tunnel built underneath it.

4. The Ocean Channel which separates the district of Detroit in the United States of America from

Canada is similarly crossed by a subway or tunnel of comparatively larger size, and motor cars and

conveyances of every kind constantly cross and recross this subway with the ocean channel over-

head.

5. Citizens travel in underground or tube railways both in London and New York.

6. The highest masonry dam built as a multipurpose reservoir is the Boulder Dam on the Colorado riv-

er in the United States of America. This dam is 726 feet high from the lowest point in the foundation

to the crown of the roadway.

7. Persons who get into a railway car at night in Berlin (Germany) wake up in the Stockholm (Sweden)

next morning after crossing 60 miles of the Baltic Sea.sewers were kept well ventilated and clean

even at such depths particularly at times of inspection.

My memoirs of UVCE and the journey thereafter….

When I was approached by Team Sampada to write an article, the first thought that rang in my

mind was, “Why, of all, me..???”. But slowly when I started writing the past 7 years of my life in a page,

I saw the rushes of what had gone through and it was like a cricket highlights match. It comprised of on-

ly 4s and 6s. So entertaining!!!

I have fallen in love with nostalgia ever since I started writing this piece. It all

started with the celebrations at my household with the good ranking I had got in CET,

the next picture moved to the day when I sat wit my dad on his legacy Kinetic Honda

and 40 minutes later, I was there..! I was in the place where I spent 4 memorable

years and my alter-home, UVCE! Though many of my friends were averse to the idea

of joining UVCE, I liked the way my elder sister was enjoying her stay @ UVCE. So

without much thought, I had said UVCE, to the officer in CET cell. There was the

beginning. I somehow liked the way UVCE functioned – Freedom Redefined.

One of my friends says, UVCE is like India in a nutshell. You get to see lot of diversity. I made

friends with so many people, who came from different corners of India, their culture, beliefs like what

the title track of Satyamev Jayate depicts. As I was casually getting acquainted to the offerings of

UVCE, we had to face the first bombshell, the Internals. Our initial preparation for that was bigger than

what we had prepared during PUC exams. I like it because; never afterwards did we attach so much of

importance to internals. I liked listening to the Lecturers. Soon the 1st semester exams were announced.

Again a new set of learning; that you don’t have to study everything in syllabus, that 5 out of 8 were

enough to get 100%. I cleared the exams; actually I was happy with the results I got too.

Attended my first fest in UVCE, it was a different experience altogether as they were totally new

to me and was very colourful just like looking through the kaleidoscope. As we moved to the 2nd year,

we dint realize that we were already a year old in the college and will be called seniors. Suddenly we

had juniors asking us for text books, notes and tips about exams and we were able to guide them too.

There began our marathon. Running around Avenue Road searching for the reference books, text books

with an occasional visit to the chat shops there used to end the day. The visits became frequent after-

wards though. In 3rd year, I started participating in all the technical and cultural fests. Be it organizing

or participating, I wanted to be a part of it. It gives an immense joy and is an amazing experience in it-

self!

Slowly our placement process started. All of us were apprehensive about it. We were keen on

getting into a company to secure our future. Sometimes it was depressing if I couldn’t get through a

company. But it actually motivated me to prepare well for the next company and give a better try. As

each of us had an offer by atleast one company by end of 3rd year, we were all happy that we were

placed and had a feeling that we have achieved something.

By fourth year though, college life changed a bit. As all of us were working on our projects we

were out of college or not in class for most of the week. Had most of our classes on weekend! As our

exams approached, we started to realize that these will be our last days in college and we wanted to

cherish these last moments of joy! Went for some fun trips, stayed in college even when we had no clas-

ses.. We just wanted to be with each other. Had lot of fun on ethnic day, farewell party etc.. I cherish all

those memoirs. It was one of the best four years of my life! I know it is really hard to sum up the 4 beau-

tiful years of college. People who are good writing can write multiple parts of the book or multiple of

seasons of a sitcom can be made too.

The rushes kind of took an abrupt stop here, as my mom called me out for dinner..! The next

episode, post dinner was about my professional life. All of us got placed in good companies and after a

break of 2 months or so I started working! When I joined the Software company, it was like a mini

UVCE as I used to see all my college mates around and company did not feel very alien to me. Though

this is a life sustaining phase, I really do want to go back to college. The experience is un-match-able.

UVCE had a great impact in shaping my career and I would like to take this opportunity to thank UVCE

for making me what I am today!
