the orthography accords with meter in simplifying a (MIndic) doublecons onan t (- - a Skt. cons onan t cluster). Regrettably Conze does notalways show the perceptivity which he did in most of the u p d d - groupof words. In 12.8d, 9c, and 22.2b, O.'s text has nidi.st.a, metrically correct,for (Pali n i d d - , ) Skt. n i r d ~ In the two last cases, ms. C has the false andunmetrical Sktization nirdi.st.a, which Conze adopts, pp. 46, 50 of I . I . J . ,and Index; his Index does not even record nidi.st.a. Again, in 20.2b and27.3b, O.'s text d u d h a r . s u ; ms. C, unmetrically, sanskritizes to d u r d h a r . s u ,which is the only fo rm o f the word in Conze' s lndex. Other cases willbe found below.w 11. There are actual ly a few hybrid forms which, orthographically ,have sanskfitized one part o f a word but left anothe r part MIndic, andwhere meter is not even involved. So the gerun d of l a b h appears asl a b d h d 29.7b, and l a b d h d n a 20.15b, 16b, and 29.8b. This enables roe tocorrect my treatment of the form l a b d h d in Gr. w 35.52. This form occursseven times in the Mah~vastu, where Senart always emended to l a b d h v d .B u t , as I now see, Senart was wrong. It (and now l a b d h d n a ) must betaken as (orthographically) semi- sanskritized representatives of the Palil a d d h d ( n a ) ; see Geiger, 209. Doubtless the real (original) pro nunciat ionwas precisely as in Pall; but since meter is not involved, we cannot withassurance change the orthography; to do that would be over-bold; whocan know at what point in BHS tradition any particular sanskritizationmay have been introduced?

w 12. The quantitative scheme of each line of Rgs. is . . . . . . . .. . . . . . This is just as in the Skt. vasantatilakg, except that forthe initial long syllable two shorts m ay be, a nd very comm onl y are, sub-stituted. But, somewhat curiously, no othe r long syllable is ever replacedby two shorts. It is also surprising that the replacement of two shortsby a long ha rdly occurs with certainty. 1 (See "Meter", w1670, 36).
