The total number of references is small: 18. The reviewer would like to have seen a more extensive bibliogra­phy.

In spite of the few criticisms, the book is well organized, essentially free from errors, and replete with chro-matograms and schematics illustrating apparatus and results. Readers should find the text interesting and condu­cive to problem solving in the ever-expanding field of gas analysis.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is practiced by analytical chem­ists and analysts engaged in a wide va­riety of disciplines ranging from bio­chemistry and medicine, foodstuffs and agricultural chemistry, general in­organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, geochemistry and mining, prospecting and petrochemistry to metallurgy. Despite the current wide­spread acceptance of AAS and the im­proved general understanding of its capabilities and limitations, informa­tion reviews and texts on the funda­mental principles of AAS and its ap­plications are needed. The practicing analyst must be provided with up-to-date information on recent advances in instrumentation and methodology.

This book was first published in German in 1972. Fortunately, it was translated into English while the au­thor was completing the second Ger­man edition. Consequently, all of the most recent developments in the tech­nique and methodology of AAS in­cluded in the second German edition have been incorporated into the En­glish edition. This is particularly im­portant in the consideration of elec­trothermal atomization techniques ap­plied to AAS. The present state-of-the-art for these important devices, which have radically changed the role of AAS in practice and extended its range of application dramatically, is dealt with thoroughly in this text.
