Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is practiced by analytical chemists and analysts engaged in a wide variety of disciplines ranging from biochemistry and medicine, foodstuffs and agricultural chemistry, general inorganic chemistry, environmental chemistry, geochemistry and mining, prospecting and petrochemistry to metallurgy. Despite the current widespread acceptance of AAS and the improved general understanding of its capabilities and limitations, information reviews and texts on the fundamental principles of AAS and its applications are needed. The practicing analyst must be provided with up-to-date information on recent advances in instrumentation and methodology.

This book was first published in German in 1972. Fortunately, it was translated into English while the author was completing the second German edition. Consequently, all of the most recent developments in the technique and methodology of AAS included in the second German edition have been incorporated into the English edition. This is particularly important in the consideration of electrothermal atomization techniques applied to AAS. Donald M. Jerina, Editor The National Institutes of Health A symposium co-sponsored by the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.

Eight chapters present in-depth research reports on the role of enzyme systems, especially cytochrome P-450, in drug activation and detoxification. This timely study on drug metabolic pathways is vital because of the possibilities of toxic or carcinogenic intermediates caused by the action of enzymes on drugs and anesthetics.
