Delayed hypersensitivity: case reportA 33-year-old woman, who was parturient at 39 weeks’

gestation, underwent continuous epidural analgesia with abupivacaine 0.075% infusion [dosage not clearly stated] duringthe active phase of labour up to delivery. Approximately 3 dayslater, she developed a pruritic, vesicular, eczematous reactionon her back and trunk up to her neckline. She received topicalcorticosteroids and, within 10 days, the lesions disappeared.About 4 months later, a 2-day patch test (readings at 2 and4 days) revealed a positive reaction to bupivacaine.Incremental challenge testing showed that she had no reactionwith articaine; she was advised that, in future, only this drugcould be administered as a local anaesthetic.Nettis E, et al.
